Waiting for the train Spent lots of time at the Forks Train to Edmonton. I didn't have too much planned for today since the "main attraction" of getting on the westbound train towards Edmonton wasn’t to happen until about 5PM. So Natalie, Laura and I took our time packing up our stuff and having a leisurely breakfast before heading over to the train station to check in our bags. At breakfast we chatted up this cool retired couple from New Zealand. They've been travelling around Canada and the US for almost five months now. They bought a used camper van and have logged about 27,000 km so far on "Kathleen." They started in Calgary and did a lot of exploring of Western Canada up to the Yukon and Alaska then back down the west coast down ... read more

Long walk to the zoo Bears, cats, birds & kangaroos Chilly out but nice. I decided to change my plans today and go to the zoo with Laura as opposed to checking out the Manitoba Museum and the Planetarium. We left around 11:30, after a leisurely breakfast and walked for a good hour before coming up on the zoo area. It was a little chilly out but not too bad once we got walking. You should have seen how red my cheeks got...perma blush. haha. It was pretty quiet at the zoo. There were perhaps six to eight cars in the car park? Walking around to the different pens it was almost like we were the only ones in the zoo besides the people working there. I'm not the biggest fan of zoos, looking at caged ... read more

Day two in Toba Another day in the Peg Easy Peasy day. I had a leisurely morning at the hostel since I made plans to meet up with Marnie, Brooke and Erin for lunch and they were going to be picking me up at the hostel at about 11:45. The thing is, once again I woke up super early this morning...6AM! I think with the time change on the weekend and then another one hour time change coming into Manitoba has really done something to my internal body clock. Must think it's 8AM. So I lay in bed for at least an hour listening to music before I fell back to sleep. When I woke up next it was about 9:30 which I thought was a decent time to be waking up. I ate my raisin ... read more

Haiku mental block Recovering from train ride I'm in Winnipeg. I thought I'd start off with sharing my horoscope as read in today's newspaper. Pisces: "Your ambitions are really growing. (You've noticed.) You've got big plans about publishing, the media, travel, education and moving on in the world. Today is a good day to talk to the head honcho. People are very impressed with you now." I always get a good laugh from reading my horoscope. So who is the head honcho? Would that be God?? Anyhoo, I made it into Winnipeg yesterday afternoon about 4PM and considering I was on the train for 32 hours from Toronto not expending a whole lot of energy I sure did feel a bit drained! lol I can't get a train ticket out of Winnipeg to Edmonton until the ... read more

Sitting on the train Taken a vow of silence. Haha. Just kidding. 07:32/06:32 The clocks have turned back one hour sometime in the middle of the night. 07:01 I’ve just been admiring the view outside the window. Yesterday there were scores of lovely trees with lots of lovely reds, oranges and yellows. Today there are lots of coniferous trees (sorry to say that I never did pay attention on how to decipher a fir from a pine from a??) and little lakes. A lot of the lakes were really still and it looked like glass with a bit of steam hovering. It's pretty cool. It's too bad I'm on a moving train because I'd love to take some pictures that weren't a big blur. Oh well. Another one of those moments I'll have to remember in ... read more

My world came shattering down as I learned the amount of fun it was possible to have at one time. It's hard to explain why this was the best weekend of my life. Maybe it was the amateur strip night at Club 3D, maybe it was the mind boggling array of amazing live music, maybe it was the 5am jam sessions in a castle, or maybe it was being at one with 10,000 dirty hippies. The heavens opened up, thunder and lightning began their dance and oceans of water came barreling down from above, as the 97' beige Mazda Protege rolled on. The car was filled to the brim with unnecessary baggage as Danny and I struggled to find comfort in the crowded back seat. The yellow lines on the highway disappeared. I looked down. Finally, changed time zones and left Ontario in the rear view mirror! A lot fewer trees where we are now in Brandon, MB. Made great time on the highways from Thunder Bay to Kenora. Then we drove through a short deluge of rain, the leftovers from what caused the flooding in Portage La Prairie (see pics) and Brandon, MB. Glad to see flat, straight highways. Quite different from what we've driven the last couple of days in Ontario. Stay Tuned........ read more

We spent most of our times at La Forche, or the Forks, where the Red River and Assiniboine River meet. On Sunday, professor Gary Hightshoe invited all of us who are Catholic (or whoever being interested in) attending a mass at the St. Boniface church. This church looks like a ruin from England, with just its facade standing up, with a big hole where the rose window used to be. Instead of tearing it down or rebuilding it, they built a smaller scale chapel inside the church, where all of the mass attendees gathered and celebrated the holy ceremony. The most unique thing about this mass is that it was in French. French sounds like Greek to me, I don't speak either language, so we just sat there, looking around the people and waited until they ... read more
