Took an “on-foot” day Saturday, 7 July 2007 This morning dawned rainy, and I really wanted a day off, but my plan had been to take the day off on Monday, not today, so we tried to be “useful”. Part of the problem was that I had to book accommodations for the next three towns we’ll visit, and that obviously required my sitting & phoning people, not one of my favorite “jobs”, just ask my friends. Also, Bob had to call Telus to deal with a problem with his cell phone that had not seemed to be affecting mine, and between being on hold for quite a long time & the technician’s spending a fair bit of time with him - and it’s still not working properly - it was already noon. There’s a Subway restaurant ... read more

Roblin south, then Inglis Friday, 6 July 2007 It has been pointed out to me that I failed to include my distance statistics with the previous posting. Guess I was so excited to figure out how to include the photos (which didn’t really appear as I’d wanted, as far as physical location goes) that I forgot the stats - I’ll tack them on at the end of this entry. This morning we drove back to Roblin, from where I intended to bicycle to Asessippi Beach, also known as Inglis Beach. It is at the bottom of a long, long, curving hill (either way), and I wasn’t sure if I was ready to tackle the hill going up yet, plus we wanted to go to Inglis, to see the grain elevators there, so Bob was going to ... read more

Hello, Manitoba! (Just to warn you, this is fairly long!) Thursday, 5 July, 2007 It was another lovely park morning, almost on the cool side. I will say we’ve been really fortunate on the whole with respect to weather - I’m not the sort who enjoys going out for a day in the rain, sorry, and we’ve somehow managed to “just miss” a lot of the bad weather which has affected communities we’ve visited or which we were planning to visit - maybe someone’s on my side. This morning I packed up all my stuff & left it for Bob to pack in the van, then headed out on Silver for Roblin, Manitoba. The previous evening we’d located where the TCT in Manitoba begins, and it was a fairly easy 7 km ride to that point, ... read more

Regina to Winnipeg  North America » Canada » Manitoba » Winnipeg By Bothan TaistilJune 29th 2007Maureen Kelly/Robert Tait June 29. The drive from Regina to Winnipeg is a long one. After settling at the campground we set out to look for a food store. We saw a mall with a sign “The Bay”. Thinking it was a supermarket we stopped, but soon discovered it was The Hudson Bay department store. On to the Safeway and then we were back to our Bothan for the night. June 30. We drove into Winnipeg and found a parking spot near The Forks. The Forks is located on the Red and the... read more

Hotel was a great idea. Left the hotel around 11, tried to get pizza hut but they weren’t open yet - went to the Don Street Deli. Was good! (Woman hacked out lungs behind Chris). When we headed out of Winnipeg the weather wasn’t as nice as it had been so far - today was rain, on and off. Saw some awesome clouds when leaving the city and took copious amounts of photos. Later, we found out that these clouds might have been responsible for a tornado which hit Elie, southwest of Winnipeg. Also interesting to note is that the rain was quite literally sideways…Chris’ window was soaked and mine was bone dry. We also saw ten million bales of hay outside the city. Southern Manitoba is flat. We took a circuitous route around the north ... read more

The drive out of Ontario was the best part of the drive. That whole area from just before Thunder Bay to the border was the nicest we've been through yet. Forests to open lakes to huge walls of rocks...we were rubbernecking the whole way. There was an hour or two where we saw NOBODY going the same direction as us, and few cars going the opposite way and absolutely no civilization on either side besides logging activity. Also, the radio stations were few and far between. We went a little crazy. We stopped for food in Ignace at a small burger stand, after which point traffic picked up. I'm not sure how that works out or where they all suddenly came from. Dryden was perhaps the most interesting town so far. They had this wierd propaganda ... read more

ON TO MANITOBA Saturday, 16 June ‘07 At least breakfast from the restaurant at our “divey” hotel was tasty - and really, I’d had as good a night’s sleep there as at a fancier place, so it really wasn’t THAT bad. We then headed west on Hwy 11 to Hwy 71, which would take us close to Kenora, en route to Winnipeg. Passing the line-up of cars to the bridge to the US, there must have been 50 or more cars, many towing small boats, for fishing, lined up single file along the curb, a line stretching for blocks. I’m not sure I’d want to do anything that badly to get into a line like that. After singing the praises of Bob’s GPS yesterday (it told us of a short-cut we’d not known about), today it ... read more

Hey everyone sorry we've been slacking on whats been going on. We flew back to Canada on April 22 and are currently in Manitoba. Dave and I are staying with my sister Nadine, and helping my dad on the farm. We will be in Manitoba until the wedding. Before we left Europe we spent a week in Edinburgh Scotland, staying with a friend of my sisters. Edinburgh is a great city and we didn't get to see even half of it. We spent pretty much the entire week walking up and down the Royal Mile doing the touristy stuff along the way. The Royal Mile is the mile long road that connects Edinburgh Castle to the Queens Palace. There was lots of things to see and do, and with our pass that we bought we ... read more
