Bear on Broadway.
These were on display along Broadway during the summer and are to be auctioned off to raise money. Most were removed already but the one outside the WCB building was still sitting there. Haiku mental block
Recovering from train ride
I'm in Winnipeg.
I thought I'd start off with sharing my horoscope as read in today's newspaper. Pisces:
"Your ambitions are really growing. (You've noticed.) You've got big plans about publishing, the media, travel, education and moving on in the world. Today is a good day to talk to the head honcho. People are very impressed with you now."
I always get a good laugh from reading my horoscope. So who is the head honcho? Would that be God??
Anyhoo, I made it into Winnipeg yesterday afternoon about 4PM and considering I was on the train for 32 hours from Toronto not expending a whole lot of energy I sure did feel a bit drained! lol I can't get a train ticket out of Winnipeg to Edmonton until the 6th of November so I'll have lots of relaxing time here in Winnipeg. I didn't really have many expectations of the place but must give the City credit that it seems to have more to offer than I have assumed...which is a good thing! I saw a pamphlet yesterday spewing off 97 great things about Winnipeg...guess they didn't have three more
On the way to St. Boniface.
Me on the Louis Riel Esplanade. to make it an even 100. lol I’ll have to share some of those great moments in a future blog.
I just wanted to send a quick hello and let you know all is well in Winnipeg. I've already checked out the Forks area and am now in the French Quarter of St. Boniface (using the free library internet!) I will spread out the fun and hopefully be able to meet up with Marnie tomorrow and will likely check out the Manitoba Museum and perhaps Assinibone Park on the weekend.
After Winnipeg it is only a couple more stops before making it home next weekend. Next stop will be Edmonton. Or more precisely, the West Edmonton Mall! I'm so looking forward to doing a bit of shopping because I won't worry so much about having to cart around my things. 😊
Hope all is well in your corner of the World.
Hugs and stuff,
Bonz
Here's how my day panned out...
I had a pretty leisurely day today. As I mentioned, I wanted to spread out the fun here in Winnipeg a bit since I do have 4 days here. I headed to the Forks area and wandered through the market looking at the food and souvenir shops when I bumped into Laura whom I'm sharing a room with at the hostel. We wandered around more of the second floor shops before heading over the newish Louis Riel Esplanade Bridge that took us over to St. Boniface, the French Quarter. Our first stop was at the library where we inquired about the internet and we got ourselves a "one time patron" pass that gave us an hour of internet time. Excellent! It's been a few days since I checked my email and there were quite a few messages there for me to read which is always nice.
The hour just zoomed by and before we knew it we were bundling up again to head outside. There was a funny phone conversation on of the librarians was having. A library patron called to inquire about a book. They couldn't remember the author or the title but it did have the word island in it. Hmm, that's not gonna come back with millions of hits...only 10,000. lol I don't know how but perhaps she got more information but she eventually found the book they were looking for. Unfortunately there were already 15 holds on the book AND it was currently packed up for the new Millennium Library was demolished back in 2003 and is being replaced by the Millennium Library. The official opening for the new library isn't until next week or something like that.
Anyhoo, after the St. Boniface Library visit, we walked over to the St. Boniface cemetery where some famous and not so famous to me people were buried. Most notable would be Louis Riel. The original Cathedral burned down years ago and what steeps did survive are still standing and then a gaudy replacement was build in behind. I think it was built in the late 60's. We didn't hang around for too long. We continued our walk around St. Boniface and saw the Riel Museum. It was $5 admission so we decided against going in. By this time it was past 1PM so we decided to head back to the Forks area and go back to the market for some lunch.
Hmm, now that we've seen the Forks and went over to St. Boniface and eaten. What is there left to do? The Museum is for another day of fun and Assiniboine Park is in the other direction. So we decided to walk down Portage and do a little shopping. Not that we needed anything but Laura was looking to buy a couple of new CD's for the train and also some really warm mitts for prep for her time in Invermere/Panorama. We were also on the lookout for an internet cafe that charged less than $6 an hour. We found one...only $5.75 and hour. haha We probably walked around more or less aimlessly until about 5PM when we got back to the hostel and I realized I still hadn't gotten a hold of Marnie...only the dreaded voicemail. So I called her cell phone and managed to get a hold of her and make some plans for lunch on Friday. Cool!
The evening was pretty ho hum. We watched "Total Recall" with Arnold and then played a game of Monopoly. Whoo hoo! lol It is interesting how people have different rules for the same game. Monopoly is definitely one of those games that take forever to finish. Thinking about it, in all of the times I've played Monopoly in my life I'm not sure if I've ever actually finished a game. Someone always seems to forfeit and then the game usually folds after that.
