Geo: 58.7691, -94.168We did another day on the tundra rovers today. Unfortunately, we only saw bears way off in the distance, out on the ice. We saw a mom and her cub but they were too far out to get a picture. When we got back to town, we went curling.....yep, curling. Awesome. In the evening, the sky was completely clear. There were millions of stars. And then, the aurora borealis (the northern lights) put on an incredible show. We also saw about 6 different foxes darting through town....not sure if the northern lights made them more active or not. ... read more

Geo: 58.7691, -94.168We arrived in Churchill around 12:00 pm. This is the area of the Hudson Bay that freezes first due to the fresh water feeding from the Churchill River. Each year, about 1,400 polar bears converge on Churchill to await the freeze in search of seals out in the bay. We were told that there have been 19 bears alarms in the town already this month, indicating that bears had wandered into town. Churchill has a "bear jail" in town where they hold the wandering bears until they can relocate about 60 miles from town. There are currently 10 bears in lock up.We did spot a red fox on the outskirts of town around sunset, as we toured around town in our bus....but no bears. We will head out in the tundra vehicles tomorrow to ... read more

Geo: 49.8994, -97.1407We flew out of Richmond this morning at 7:30 at 62 degrees, through beautiful skies in Chicago at 28 degrees, and then on to Winnipeg. We arrived in Winnipeg around noon local (1:00 ET), into 25 mph winds, 20 degree temps, and snow flurries. The Natural Habitat Adventures (our trip outfitters and the same ones that we used for our Africa trip) representative was waiting for us at the airport and took us to the Fort Gary Hotel about 15 minutes away. The Fort Gary Hotel was built between 1911-1913.We will stay here tonight and tomorrow night, exploring Winnipeg, and then head on to Churchill, Manitoba ... read more

WINNIPEG We awoke early to catch our flight from Vancouver to Winnipeg which was only a two and half hour flight but we lost two hours in time as well. Our hotel was right next to the airport so we were able to walk but as soon as we got outside the cold really hit you - we hoped it would not get any colder during our stay…. The City of Winnipeg is located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, almost at the geographic centre of North America. It is the eighth largest city in Canada and dominates the Manitoba economy. Around the mid 1700s fur trading posts started to spring up and brought in the first permanent settlement of the area with a group of Scottish crofters. The arrival of the Canadian ... read more

I'm running late on writing the blogs...Saturday in Vancouver...we are Tuesday night and I'm ready to board a plane to Johannesburg...but still in Bangkok...and tomorrow afternoon, should be finally in Congo. Don't ask me the secrets to deal with jetlag...you simply have to deal with it! The kids are happy to be home, they had some fun time in Saigon, but now it's back to school till Christmas. For me it's back to work...and hit the small white ball too in Congo, even if you will still ready 2 more blogs on my Canadian adventures...more to come. But first, the polar bear! I'm fortunate to have enjoyed an amazing trip to Antarctica back in 2008...than few years later, I went on a multi-days adventure dog sledging with a good friend in Greenland. My last adventure still ... read more

A blog centered on the polar bears, and I'm not publishing a single picture of a bear. The reason is simple...I've got way too many pictures and these are coming in my next blog. I had planned this trip for a while...and it was on my wish list for even longer. If you want to see polar bears, and want to see a lot of them, there is only one place in the world....up North in the middle of nowhere in Canada, I name the little city of Churchill. Bear season is very short, just 6 weeks from early October till around the 20th of November. The polar bear spend most of their year on the ice in the Bay of Hudson. By the end of July, the ice has melt, and the bears are simply ... read more

This is a dream trip...and now you are rightly asking...is a dream trip for you going to Winnipeg after Toronto? The answer is obviously no...but I'm on the road...actually...I'm on the move...no car or much road involved here...and I'm on my way to something pretty special...and the way to get there, is special by itself! So my next stop is Winnipeg. Trust me, from here, the next three entries should be a little more insane...and not specially in a chronological order. I'm in the middle of the dream right now, writing this after a nearly completed day...a very long day, which could be far from being over...a day where I already took 400 pictures...yes...in a single day! So here I am in Winnipeg...or rather, here I was...and here I'll be again pretty soon. Pretty interesting to ... read more
