Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement. We are now in Brandon at the Meadowlark Campground where we are feeling decidedly outclassed by our fellow campers in their pricey RVs. We laid out $65 for our tent at walmart. Michele makes into a home that is just as nice (if not quite as comfortable) as any of the $100,000 beauties that surround us. We have now reached the point in our trip where we have to drive to Calgary in order to be able to connect with friends who are only going to be there on June 6th. We put Allan (my Fuji touring bike named in honour of Allan Turing) in his rack on top of the car. We have both made solemn pledges to warn each other about going under anything low ... read more

It's been said by someone somewhere that one can never really come home again. I'm glad that's not true. Home is, well, home. After 10 hours on 2 planes, and an 8 hour drive north, we found ourselves back in the parking lot at the school, students and parents reunited. I am not sure who was more relieved: them or me! It was one of those moments where one just cannot decide if the past 10 days were a vivid group dream or if they really did happen. Over the 12 days we were gone explored 4 distinct regions of the UK. We definitely didn't have enough time. We left so much undiscovered, and had to move on all too quickly. We met new people and made some friends. We argued, and laughed, debated, questioned authority, ... read more

Well, hello. It's been awhile. For some of you five years, to be exact, since my epic Chinese soujourn. I am off on another adventure. If you received a message via email that there is a new post, then, TA-DA! This is it. If you would like me to unsubscribe you from the blog, drop me a line at spiritednortherngirl@gmail.com. I will honour your wish, but I warn you, you will be missing out on green Irish grass and English castles, Scottish kilts, ceilidhs, leprechauns, a World Heritage Site, The Giants' Causeway, The London theatre scene, etcetera. I am hoping we laugh every day, sample interesting new foods, see and smell new sights that all of us remember for some time to come. Geo: 49.8994, -97.1407Steve was just saying yesterday that we have had the most incredible weather so far on this trip. And that was certainly the truth. Then we woke up this morning to heavy rain. It was pouring fiercely outside the hotel. A review of the radar, however, showed it to be centralized over the Duluth area, so I was optimistic that we would drive out of it in quick order. And, as luck would have it, when we went down to pack the car and get going, it was not raining at all!! So we loaded up, jumped in, and were on our way at 8:35 and 63 degrees. And as we pulled out of the parking lot, it began to come down in buckets. I guess we had a little bit of the Irish ... read more

Today we went to the Assiniboine Zoo. We strolled around the zoo and saw some very cool animals, such as lynx, a tiger, goats, and polar bears. The place was nice. We went through all the exibits and saw everything. I really liked the Polar Bears. Their were two bear cubs and I saw three adult polar bears. We ate lunch at the zoo and looked at more cool animals, and then we went into a limited time anamatronic dinosaur thing. It was pretty cool but they had the same exact thing at the Minnesota zoo once, so I had seen most of it before, but they had these Chinese dinosuars that were new and amazing. Did you know that there's like a pit in China that has hundreds of dinosuar bones in it? I certainly ... read more

Monday June 6th I graduated! Yay! But that is not why I hopped on a plane several hours after my graduation. Everyone thinks I am on some post-grad journey of self discovery or trying to run away to peace and quiet after a brutal last year from hell. The truth is, now that I am free I am finally free to do what I was born to do, which is to travel. Also my boss at the restaurant needed me in July to fill in for everyone, and I eventually have to do the adult thing and look for jobs in my field so leaving in the middle of the summer made no sense. Plus it is Ramadan AND F1 weekend which means everyone who usually goes to the resto is either not eating supper this ... read more

"Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind" -- Seneca I have to start out by saying, "Wow!" My life has changed so much in the past two months. Even though it's a little embarrassing to admit, for awhile there in February, I was a snotty mess, curled up on my couch feeling pretty sorry for myself. When I was not at work, I spent a lot of time uncontrollably crying, not eating, and watching action movies since romance movies just made me gag. I also filled the silence listening to the songs, 'Burning House' and 'Shut Up and Drive' which were supposed to make me feel better. Of course, there was some Adele music in there too which has made me come to the conclusion --- Adele is amazing, no one can ... read more

It's been quite awhile since I've found time to post, and so much has happened. 2015...wow just thinking about it makes me sigh. 2015 was one of the most difficult years of my life! It definitely wasn't all bad, but collectively, it was a pretty tough one. I know..2015 has been over for a little while since it's already mid-February in 2016, but even now, I'm still recovering from the year of chaos. The year started well with a nice night out dancing for new years, but shortly after led to me heading back to East Lansing earlier than normal. The next few months were just a blur of teaching, data analysis, and non-stop writing. The timer had started for my intended defense date. Also thrown in there were numerous job applications and interviews, overseeing a ... read more

Today Tim and I decided to really explore downtown Winnipeg. I started out the day wearing two different earrings and only noticed after a couple of hours. Sheesh! People must have questioned my fashion sense! We got our walking tour map out and set out from the French Quarter where we were staying. I've never been to Winnipeg, but people who have always seem to talk about it in a disparaging manner or give it nicknames like Winterpeg or the Slurpee Capital of the World. Winnipeg surprised and delighted us. We were blown away by its history, architecture and beauty. Had we known, we would have visited it years ago instead of avoiding it. In fact, we almost skipped it on our cross-Canada tour altogether and what a pity that would have been. Our day was ... read more

Tim and I will be couchsurfing for a portion of trip, staying with eight different hosts throughout Canada. Couchsurfing.com is a social site which helps travelers meet hosts in their own or different countries. Hosts, who are often travelers themselves and want to meet and interact with other travelers, sign up on the site to share their homes. Free accommodation ranges from simple couches to spare bedrooms and guest cottages. Not only is your place to sleep free, you often make friends for life, experience your destination from a local perspective, and take part in a truly social experience. You can choose the kind of host you wish to stay with (e.g., gender, single, couple, age, etc.) and can get a feel for their personalities based on their profiles. You can see reviews left by other ... read more
