NOTE*--I must say, that this blog post is a bit late, and we do apologize. I really hit the ground running when I returned to real life. Between Rachel and I, this is the best we could do time-wise. Better late than never. Right? -Carolyn The last student blogger is Rachel, a grade 10 student, who is 16 years old. Rachel was prepared for everything. If someone needed something while we were travelling, chances are that Rachel had it! I was impressed by that. Rachel attended both Riverside and Burntwood schools before coming to R. D. Parker. She's been out of Canada a few times before we went to the U. K., but never without her family. Her EF Tour was something that she will always remember. I just want to start off by saying how ... read more

It's been said by someone somewhere that one can never really come home again. I'm glad that's not true. Home is, well, home. After 10 hours on 2 planes, and an 8 hour drive north, we found ourselves back in the parking lot at the school, students and parents reunited. I am not sure who was more relieved: them or me! It was one of those moments where one just cannot decide if the past 10 days were a vivid group dream or if they really did happen. Over the 12 days we were gone explored 4 distinct regions of the UK. We definitely didn't have enough time. We left so much undiscovered, and had to move on all too quickly. We met new people and made some friends. We argued, and laughed, debated, questioned authority, ... read more

Mollie P. is the next featured blogger. She is 15, and in grade 10. Mollie lives at Paint Lake with her family. This trip was the first time she was ever out of Canada. Excuse the lateness of our posts. Our last 3 days became pretty wild and long once we got to London. It all stated at birth, and 15 years later.. this is where I am. Just chilling in Europe, no big deal. Twas' pretty wild I'd say. Let me tell you about how it was crazy from start to finish. Those planes got the best of us with the long flights and the lay-overs and hauling our luggage around everywhere. It was painfully exhausting because on top of that we were all horribly jet-lagged, and we had to get right on the road ... read more

Reanne M. is 15. She is shy, articulate, and has a beautiful smile. Her hobbies are sewing, gaming, listening to music and exploring. She hopes to become a nurse when she grows up. She enjoys eating crepes filled with strawberries, bananas and Nutella. This day the trip was slowly coming to an end. Our huge group made up of four other small ones got split up and each went to a museum of their choosing. I went with six kids from our group to the science museum in London which held many exhibits including space exploration and old/newer technology. With left over time from finishing the museum early our group went to go get food from new places. Mollie, Rachel, Johnathan and I went to go get crepes while Julia and Aislyn went across the street ... read more

The next featured blogger is Julia, who celebrated her sweet 16 by waking up in Edinburgh, Scotland, visiting Edinburgh castle, and then taking a train by the sea, and through the countryside to London. She was serenaded and served chocolate cake by our group, thanks to tour guide, Lewis. Tough life, eh Julia? This young lady aspires to be a hair stylist and more than once admitted she would have liked to stay in Europe. I am glad she didn't as that would have caused me a ton of paperwork. Here are her words... Well, I guess you could say the first few days of this trip were a complete gong show. We were in so many airports and time zones I didn't even know what day it was; we were basically awake for 48 hours. ... read more

It's Kya's turn to blog today. Kya is 17 and in grade 11 and is hoping to study social work at the University of Manitoba after graduation next year. Kaya enjoys being active and going to the gym. She loves shopping, fashion, has a sunny disposition and has the travel bug now! We are writing this blog while cruising on the ferry to Scotland this very early morning.... Yesterday we started the day off at the Giant's Causeway. It was the most beautiful, magnificent experience of my life. Every scene was breath-taking and I couldn't get enough of it. I've met so many different people so far and had a conversation with one of the security guards at the Giant's Causeway and he was so amazed to have met a Canadian. One of the things I ... read more

Today's post is brought to you by Aislyn C. She is 18, and graduating this year. She jingle dances and wants to study business admin at university. She is currently teaching herself Swedish to make a connection to her father's family. She is one of my favourite people. Carolyn We started the day off early around 7:30-8:00 ish and made our way up to Belfast, Ireland. The drive was about two hours long, which is absolutely great because sleeping on a bus isn't the most enjoyable or comfortable on this here planet. When then met our tour guide, Jacky. He was very informative and taught us a lot of things but if I'm being honest, it kinda went in one ear and out the other. I was too busy looking out the window and at the ... read more

Introducing Jon M., a very bright and humourous young man, Jon is the sole male student with us on this trip. He is likely overdosing on estrogen. Poor boy. He is one of my favourite students ever. This is his account of today. Carolyn A recurring theme in the Republic of Ireland seems to be rebellion. In this case it would be less in the traditional sense of negative connotation, and instead in an effort to assert freedom, independence, and sovereignty. To quote our "informed travel companion", Lewis, "the rebels of yesterday are the politicians of tomorrow". This theme would be no more appropriate than today, Easter Sunday, the 101st anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916, a critical and bittersweet moment in the history of Ireland. While back home kids are looking for chocolate, and ... read more

To really experience jet lag means misery. Poor kids. We all felt deathly by the time we landed in Ireland and sat in the airport with Lewis Irvine, our EF Tour Guide. Smelly, sweaty, incredibly fatigued we were a sad lot; however, after a quick freshen up we felt somewhat better. Our first glimpse of Ireland did not disapppint. We did some shopping on O'Connell street, ate supper at a real pub, had a meeting and then the kids begged to be let go to bed! Hahahaha. Never thought I'd see the day. It was a challenging day. One of our girls lost her passport. She left it on the plane. Neither she nor I was allowed into the UK. Both of us prayed that passport was found on the flight we abandoned. It was! After ... read more

I sit in an intimate and elaborately outfitted internet bar/cafe in Pearson Airport with about 1000 others. The din of conversations is punctuated by glasses clinking and cutlery scraping plates. Someone is munching on potato chips neraby enough that the crunch is palpable. While not as packed as it was in December when I was on my way through to Paris, it is busy enough with some groovy alternative tunes, and I am reminded that living in the north means places with almost the population of my town make me feel frazzled and unsettled. Too much noise and much invasion of my space. My lack of sleep over the past two nights is catching up with me. That is actually okay because I need to sleep on the plane. I really, really need to sleep. Looking ... read more
