North America » Canada » Manitoba » Dauphin August 4th 2014

... read more

Happy summertime everyone! Things are all going well up here on the shore of Hudson Bay, we are both back at work, and the summer vibe is in the air. I sometimes feel, however, that I cannot differentiate between work and play! They can be almost as one - they can merge together. I have just been on a 12 day camping trip in Wapusk National Park as part of the Manitoba Breeding Bird Atlas program. We (Ken and I) started our days at 0230 and conducted point counts in as many grid squares as we could feasibly manage. During the 12 days, we counted 92 species of birds, which I've listed at the bottom of the page for all of our birder blog-followers. It was a great trip and we had 12 days of mainly ... read more

North America » Canada » Manitoba » Thompson June 27th 2014

Still here in Thompson preparing for my trip physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. I don't know what to expect. They say 'be flexible'. I think that is definitely one of my strengths. I'm not sure what to expect from a country with a difficult history. I've done some reading on the subject, and I can actually understand an attitude that says 'Just because you have a lot of support, you can't tell us what we can or can't do'. I don't know how 'developed' it is. Is it like Guatemala where the really poor people had low levels of education and lived in shacks with aluminum roofs and dirt floors? Or would it be similar to Korea with more modernization but some very conservative traditions and values (like it was OK for men to hold hands ... read more

A big hello to all of our blog followers... A blog by Dave... We haven't blogged for a wee while, partly because we've not traveled a great deal during the year other than work related trips, and partly because we've had almost endless sunshine all year and have spent most of our time outside... However, we are now losing daylight very quickly and the temperatures are falling by the day so we're starting to get into hibernation mode - ideal for writing a blog or two. There has been a few 'incidents' this year involving our furry-faced friends... There was one fellow who got charged a couple of times by a young bear on the Town Beach and another chap who got bitten and scratched by a different young bear! Both men were O.K., but understandably, ... read more

Geo: 49.8994, -97.1407Since train arrival times in Canada are apparently something of a guessing game involving wegee boards and a healthy dose of 'blind mans bluff', we decided to overnight in the capital of Manitoba, Winnipeg (home of the windiest street corner in the world- Portage & Main- and it's usually a bone chilling Arctic wind at that!!). DH was positively giddy that not only had we booked into the historic Fort Gary Hotel (previous visits had us in the Lincoln Motel- somewhat unfairly referred to as the Stinkin Lincoln) but she was also able to secure us Room 202. The Fort Gary Hotel is one of those grand old hotels built by the railroads at the turn of the century and as such, it has seen its share of tragedy and turmoil- there are a ... read more

Geo: 55.7443, -97.8507The only stop on our train journey that allowed for any visit much longer than a train-side cigarette break and leg stretch was Thompson, Manitoba. While chatting with some more experienced train riders of the north, DH had discovered that Thompson was home to a solitary and proud Tim Horton's Coffee Shop, and she-who-must-be-obeyed decided that we would be seeking out this beacon of coffee ecstasy even if it were to jeopardize our timely return to the train. My reasons for seeing Thompson were far less substantial of course, but I wanted to wander the town that I had heard so much about when I was toiling as an underground miner many years ago in the nearby metropolis of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Thompson was/is a nickel mining town and, among the hardrock types, was ... read more

Geo: 58.7254, -94.1168Part II of our current world wanderings is supposed to be a little bit of the 'vida loca' in Central and South America. And what better way to get to Costa Rica than via Churchill, Manitoba. Some of our more loyal viewers might be thinking that DH was somehow in charge of logistics on this leg of the trip, and while it's true that my Princess' navigational skills continue to start and finish with a coin toss, viewing polar bears in their natural environment has long been on our bucket list (and Churchill, Manitoba is the self-anointed polar bear capital of the world). Since Churchill is never really on the way to anywhere else, we decided to make it a stop on the way to Costa Rica.No roads lead to Churchill (literally) so one ... read more
