We arrived in Vancouver on the 11th and spent a few days shopping for snowboarding stuff (lots of bargains to be found!) before heading up to Whistler. Apart from the shopping and Stanley Park we didn't discover any other highlights in Vancouver just lots of mice (which lived in our hostel room!) and hobos. We may give it another chance after we've finished boarding in Whstler. We headed up to Whistler on the 14th to be welcomed by Donuts (a uni friend) and some rain..... which eventually turned into snow. We stayed with Donuts for a few days, in which time we wandered round Whistler hobnobbing with the rich Yanks and Ausies. We got a couple of lift passes and headed up the mountain for a test drive of Di's new board boots and bindings. They ... read more

We have now been in Vancouver for 9 days within which time we have been able to develop some initial thoughts on the city and Canada overall, and make some interesting (and some not so interesting) observations. Some of these things may seem small and insignificant to most of you but I guess when you’re traveling in a foreign country on the other side of the world it is these little things that you notice and stick in your mind to remind that indeed NZ is a long way away. When they said it rains allot in Vancouver, they weren't kidding. Although it hasn't rained everyday it hasn't exactly been sunny either. On a couple of occasions it has bucketed down persistently all day. However, the frequent rainy weather does not seem to dampen the spirits ... read more

February 4th-7th 2007 Okay…so after a busy two months, I got the chance to take a break. Though it was more of necessity , it turned out to be a beautiful trip…one where we sampled food in some awesome restaurants and also got to explore a little bit of British Columbia. The only sad part is that Karthik and Anitha could not accompany me Sriram and Saumitra, our neighbors and close friends in Nashville, TN came with me as they had to get their visas renewed too. Normally when you leave for a trip you end up doing research deciding where to go and what to sight see, in our case it was what documents to take and how to get to the Consulate and back. We really were not in a mind frame to ... read more

Dahna: People talk about how hard the whole job searching thing can be on your ego, but I have actually started enjoying writing about how good I am and what I have done over and over again. I go to sleep like a new age positive thinking guru, chanting “I am an excellent communicator. I am highly organized. I work well under pressure. I enjoy deadlines….” Etc. Over the next couple of weeks we did manage to get a few blasts of fresh air and make some spaces between selection criteria’s and cover letters. I can’t quite remember specific dates now, but shortly after the Lynn Peak expedition we went for a walk out to Wreck beach, which sits on the foreshore behind the University of British Columbia (UBC). So far, UBC has left the foreshore ... read more

... read more

Well here we are again.... How time flys quickly when your having fun. We last left off with Chris promising that she would head to the hill shortly, or was it maybe or even probably not! Can't remember now.... but either way you will find out shortly. December appeared before we knew it and Bridget (Chris' sister) was knocking down our front door to take control of our day lounge (or now know as the Den) for the next month. Bridget kindly travelled over for 4 weeks to spend Christmas and New Years with Chris. During the end of November Chris decided that seeing as though she was going to spend as little time on the mountain skiing as possible she would spend her time working, and working is what she did. Chris started working at ... read more

Of course before we take off across the world we have to get in a few more trips across the Province. A work trip to Prince George turned into a visit with my best friend Shelley and her girls, Bianca (Kotah's best friend) and Dayla in Vanderhoof. We met and became the greatest of friends as we were neighbours in a duplex in Cleawater. Oh, many a fun time happened there. Now we live 7 hours apart in good weather and i make sure I see them whenever possible. We had a great visit. Shelley and I stayed in and chatted for three days while Dakotah and Bianca went to the highschool dance, and Dakotah got to experience a regular day of school in highschool. I had spies at the dance. We took a friend from ... read more

Jono: Well it is about time I actually contributed to the Jono and Dahna blog. So here is some babble from Jono... David Suzuki, a resident of Vancouver, describes the city as the most beautiful on Earth. After two weeks in Vancouver I tend to agree, for the most part. An easy five minute walk down Commercial drive to get some groceries reveals a breathtaking sweeping panorama of snow capped mountains. A 20 minute bus trip to the University of British Columbia campus and we find ourselves in a forest of ancient, giant fir trees and desolate, rocky shorelines with amazing views of the mountainous Vancouver Island. Another short trip by bus and ferry takes us to the base of the mountains we see from Commercial Drive. The forest is so green and wet. The trees ... read more
