Hey all So I'm sitting on the couch with the flu and though it was the perfect opportunity to send a blog. So, appart form the flu, things are going great (arnt they always?). I've finally slowed down on the work front and now just do part time instead of 7 days a week. It feels wanderful. I even got down to Vancouver for 4 days last week and saw the Canucks play (a huge vancouver hockey team) which was not as fun as i though it would be I have to say. Seeing as I dont know the rules or players I wasn't feeling much love. Plus we lost. Badly!! Bit At least I saw them and got a T-shirt out of it. the night out after was much better. Xmas and new year went ... read more

hi everyone! i write on my last evening in vancouver - i've had a great time here freezing my butt off! i think the top temperature the last few days has been -1, down to about -10. i cracked out the thermals and have been layering up, but nothing can really keep the cold totally out. bought some leather gloves, the best investment yet of this trip. the first day i was out in the morning in the snow and without gloves it was sooo painful! there is still a fair bit of snow around, still from the dump on wednesday...shows you how cold it's been. today i went skiing at grouse mountain!! my first ever attempt at skiing went pretty well in my opinion, only stacked it twice! had a bit of trouble stopping and ... read more

As I jumped on the bus to Vancouver and started to drive out of town, it became all so apparent that I am definitely living in a bubble!! And god it felt good to get out! Don’t get me wrong - it’s a really nice feeling living in such a small community although I think I’ll be needing a regular visit to anywhere else to make sure I don’t go too stir-crazy. Life cruises along fairly rapidly here and while a whole lot of nothing seems to happen, the past few weeks have been quite eventful… Xmas was really nice. We cooked up a massive roast turkey feast in our apartment with about 10 other workmates. We drew a crayola xmas tree on the wall and put all the secret santa presents underneath. It was almost ... read more

I heard it was around 40 degrees in Sydney, Australia, a few days back. A huge 70 degree (Celsius) difference between us and home. Yes that’s right guys and gals, it was - (minus) 30 degrees, a cold that I have never experienced before, a cold that when you remove your gloves to take a picture, 10 seconds later you lose the feeling in the hands, a cold that gives you a constant brain freeze. The weather channel called it an Artic Dry event. There was no wind chill, a still day at -30c was just C.O.L.D. We took the girls up the Gondola, and after a little snowboarding, Alissa stated that she doesn’t do chairlifts and she certainly doesn’t do - 30 degrees, she did end up mastering the chairlift but I don’t think any ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Fernie January 13th 2007

Ski destinations don't really get more renowned than the expansive Canadian resorts, and Fernie had that 'criminally overlooked' feel about it, virtually as soon as you had reached the resort proper, and assessed the state of play, and the vast nature of the ski terrain. This time around, lodgings were in the shape of a catered chalet, with 2 friendly Australian chalet hosts, and an unreliable shuttle bus service which prompted us to rely more heavily on the legendary hospitality and accommodating nature of passing Canadian motorists with room in the back of the vehicle for you and your ski gear. Being a leisure skier and nothing more, I simply revelled in the option of gliding across luscious terrain where ski conditions were the best I had ever experienced, and the routes were clearly marked, until ... read more
