As I jumped on the bus to Vancouver and started to drive out of town, it became all so apparent that I am definitely living in a bubble!! And god it felt good to get out! Don’t get me wrong - it’s a really nice feeling living in such a small community although I think I’ll be needing a regular visit to anywhere else to make sure I don’t go too stir-crazy. Life cruises along fairly rapidly here and while a whole lot of nothing seems to happen, the past few weeks have been quite eventful…
Xmas was really nice. We cooked up a massive roast turkey feast in our apartment with about 10 other workmates. We drew a crayola xmas tree on the wall and put all the secret santa presents underneath. It was almost like being at home… except for the notable lack of family, friends and stinking hot weather. Although I hear that summer has been fairly average over there anyways!
3 days later my brand new nephew arrived - Angus William Warne! He’s gorgeous, of course, and Mere, Grant, Jemima and Bridget are all very happy with him. I was feeling pretty homesick after Xmas
but the arrival of Angus only made it sink in even further! I’m really sad that I don’t get to see him and cuddle him for 9 months however am looking forward to getting lots of photos and videos to keep me updated (hint hint Mere!).
New Years was good - we went to a house party in a nearby suburb however the thought of working the next day haunted me all night long! Never want to do that again! Also Sara had to work the night so really missed having her there too. But the biggest downfall was that Matt was on the other side of the world, kicking back at the Woodford Folk Festival cruising up the coast in a kombi… I’d have given anything to be there with him!!!! Ah well… there’s always next year.
Then came one of the most exciting things that happened to us yet in Whistler… the arrival of Rachel and Krishnan (Jill’s best friends)!! I hadn’t expected to see a whole lot of them but we ended up spending most days and nights with them, and loved every minute. It was the perfect combination of good company, familiar faces and
the introduction to the coolest bar in Whistler - the GLC. Situated at the base of Whistler, I’d somehow managed to miss going there in the previous 6 weeks since we arrived. Now that I’ve found it, there’s nowhere else we’d rather drink! Also had a few great days riding with them, lots of nice powder runs through the trees and our most extreme moment after following Duncan down the glacier into the double black chute called Pakalolo… after much procrastinating we all made it down alive and felt all the more hardcore for it! Thanks Duncs.
So it’s been a bit lonely since they left on Friday… which brings me back to the start, the moment I left Whistler!
Nigel and Kat have just moved into their new apartment in Burnaby and had their housewarming on Friday night, the perfect excuse to get down and see them. It was only a short visit but had an awesome night. Started out at their place which is about 30 mins by bus from Van, high up above the city with amazing views over the whole district. Was so nice to meet all their Canadian friends and catch up with
them both. After a few pre-drinks and nibblies we headed down into Van and went to a club on Granville called Caprice. Someone knew someone, so we were walked straight to the front of the queue - beats lining up in sub zero temperatures that’s for sure. Had a funny night with lots of dancing to gangster rap and hip-hop. Needless to say lots of alcohol was consumed! Ended up staying downtown in Siobhan’s apartment - one of the coolest apartments I’ve seen… brand new warehouse style with exposed brick walls and rafters, and located right in the middle of Yaletown, the trendiest part of Van. Loved it. After a few good hours on the couch the following day and my first North American cheeseburger meal (mmmmm!), I trudged back to the bus stop and headed ‘home’ to Whistler. And here I am!
Missing you all. Speaking of which, can someone please send me some photos! Would love to see all your summer holiday shots. Happy Australia Day if I’m not in touch before then. Will be sure to update you on the shenanigans that will be going on here!
All my love
