Day 31. 11,102Km. Happy 142nd Birthday. As soon as I left the West side of Calgary I could see the mountains. I've been waiting a month for this. I like mountains. Did I mention that already? The closer I got the more excited I felt. I must have been it the mountains in the States before but it's been a long time. Being a holiday I did'nt think it was a good idea to move on but I often taken the road less traveled. Sometimes literally on this trip. I was headed for Banff by 11.00 but chose to drive right on past to Lake Louise. When traffic ground to a halt and then crawled for several miles I was second guessing my decision. Was this holiday traffic? An accident? Turned out to be a few ... read more

1st July Had to switch rooms today as we only had the one we were in for two days so packed everything up including all the Canadian tat and shifted to an equally nice room if somewhat smaller. Drove up to Lake Louise not too long a drive by local standards, the water was an incredible blue colour looked really inviting wanted to jump in and swim around that was until i put a hand in and thought better of it,so went horse riding instead just a one hour trek the horses do the same trek all the time so basically we sat on them and went wherever they decided did do a little work guiding them, at one point we were supposed to ride around a tree and head back my horse(chevy) had other ideas ... read more

30th June We did the tourist thing and went out and bought lots of souvenirs for everyone so be prepared for some excellent tat. Some more shopping at an Indian trading post where we could have spent the kids inheritance followed by some sightseeing at the Bow River which had a largish waterfall and the water was freezing. After that we went up to the Banff Springs Hotel(rather posh) and pretended like we were royalty by walking through it and sitting on the patio(a real one) the view was awesome. We then went to the hot springs and now we are cured of all ailments and are in perfect health it also turned Brendans blue hair a shade of green. At night we went across the road to the Youth Hostel for tea which served fantastic ... read more

A new country! After seeing all of Glacier that I could, I headed north into Alberta. Going through customs took about a 1/2 hour because I had to declare the shotgun I brought with me. It went just fine, just took a bit longer than with nothing to declare. (Special thanks to Joe, who convinced me not to try to smuggle a handgun in.) Being tired from the previous night's activity, I figured I'd get to Calgary and find a motel. Well, I screwed up and got caught in the evening rush and decided I just had to get past Calgary. So, I pressed on to Banff, the town inside Banff National Park. Boy, am I glad I did. Driving through the part of Alberta south of Calgary and east of the Rockies is reeaaal flat. ... read more

May 26 Hotel: Fairmont Banff Springs Today the plan was to pick up our rental car and explore the area around Banff. We had arranged a one-way rental from Avis to drop off in Calgary the following Saturday. That ended up being pretty pricy; a one-way rental that was 1 day too short to be counted as a weekly; also picking up from a neighborhood Avis station. Nome of the coupons/AWD I tried really brought the price down any! There was also the issue of parking; the Fairmonts in Banff and Lake Louise charge ~$30-$35 per night for parking! Luckily I had read on Flyertalk just before leaving that there were places to park nearby for free. In Banff you can park along the road leading away from the hotel. In Lake Louise there is a ... read more

Quick update Drive to Banff was a long one. 8-9 hour round trip. But - totally worth it. The drive from Kamloops to Banff is one of the most scenic things I have ever experiened. It was jaw drop after jaw drop and got better and better. Stayed in Banff for a night ( got into the hotel at 12.30am) and got off next morning to Okotoks to visit my Cousin (who I haven't seen for nearly 18 years) and his new family for the night. A few days before they had their second child so I got to meet them all! Was fantastic. Brought my self a Cowboy hat as it is cowboy country, just south of Calgary. Back to Banff next day - again a wonderful drive as your going into the Mountains as ... read more

Highly recommended by Col, we drove up to Columbia Icefield and Jasper town, before heading back to Banff town for the night. The drive from Lake Louise to Jasper was approx 250km. Expected to just take at most 3 hrs to get there. But the scenery was simply too breathtaking. Every corner, every bend, every angle depicts the majesty of the Rockies. Naturally, we stopped at different look out points to take photo and more photos. We were told that there will be waterfalls everywhere... we tried very hard to look for it but to no avail. Finally we realised that the waterfall are all frozen and they looked like a strip of ice on the mountains. Arrived at the Columbia Icefield and gazed at the spectacular thick mass of ice. A pity the icefiled is ... read more

Needless to say heads were sore after our big night out in Banff, Ricks decidely so. Scott pushed through it and went out for a second day on the slopes. Tina, Nic, Rick and I decided to go and have a look at Lake Louise. I'd seen it in the summer months, so wanted to see the transformation, they usually have ice sculptures on it and all. As we drove out though the worst snow storm I have ever seen swept into the valley, making visibility terrible. We would have seen barely a few feet in front of us so went for plan B a walk at Johnston Canyon. As we drove towards it I was interested to see bridges over the road that seemed to go to nowhere. As it turns out they are for ... read more
