Not so early up today. Breakfast at Dennies (bagel) then onto the coach for a quick tour. Went to fort Calgary and got talking to a retired mountie. A very interesting man who knew a lot about Indian ways. Eventually arrived at Banff, covered in smoke from the fires. A lovely place and we had a very brief orientation tour before being dropped off for lunch. Had fast food (chinese) very good. Then back on the coach to see some sights. The bow river and falls, the mountains and the Hoodoos. (photo will explain) Saw a mountain squirrel that was really cute. Forgot to say that we saw an Elk and a hawk this morning. Now it is early evening and all I can hear from outside is the sound of American Magpies and every hour ... read more

... read more

When: 17th-18th July 2010 What: A couple hikes from the Rocky mountain guide book Firsts: hiking with S(& Amma) for 8.6km... Leaving relatively late for a walk-in campsite at Tunnel Mountain, we were pleasantly surprised to find one(& many more) at 10.30am. Turns out the Calgary Stampede was the dampener taking people away from the parks. It was a HOT day! Not the ideal climate to hike, specially at noon. But we were not the only people on the trail. Haven't been to this part of the park, so was excited to be here & Ganesh was more than happy to strike off some hikes from the book. The hike to Sundance canyon starts off at the Cave & Basin area. It can be biked for 3.2km & is a pretty setting for biking, I should ... read more

On atterrit à Calgary. Y'a pas à dire ... read more

When: June 26th-27th Where: Lake Louise part of Banff National Park Weather: 17 C - 2 C Highlights: Lake Louise & Moraine Lake We decided on this trip at 6pm on Friday evening. Being unaware of the campground availability situation over the weekend, I made a reservation. I was surprised that anything was still available. It probably was the weather. The low on Sunday morn was to touch 2C. The low temperature in July/August(peak Summer) is 3C. So, there did not seem a point to wait for the weather to get any better. Having said that, camping was our only option. Hotels/even hostels are ridiculously expensive. Saturday, 26th We left a little late around 9.00am & reached Lake Louise around 11.30am. We encountered quite a bit of traffic but no serious bottlenecks. After a brief stop ... read more

Happy Birthday, Barbara and Peggy! We left Hinton ready to see Jasper and Banff National Parks after hearing so many times how beautiful they are. And believe me, they did not disappoint. Jasper started out with Jasper Lake and the Athabasca River. Then Pyramid Mountain, covered with snow came into view. Around each curve, it got more beautiful, more snow on the mountain tops, more glaciers, more green lakes and rivers. It’s slow going because you hate to pass up any overlooks. The Canadian Rockies are what the Rockies should look like; rocky. At the Columbia Icefield Kerry, Bob and Gena decided to walk up to the glacier. I only went partway up and watched them as they crawled in places and dragged poor Moe up the steep spots. The wind coming down off the glacier ... read more

We went to visit the famous Banff Springs Hotel. We were greeted at the door with a man dressed in a kilt who promptly informed us that we could only visit the bottom 2 floors since we were not staying there. He was nice but we noticed a “rich” atmosphere here. The stores where we were allowed go were all top scale and price. On that note, Dan found a zoom lens for my camera that will allow me to zoom without changing lenses all the time, which I have been doing a lot this trips. It was way to much money but he bought it and said Happy Anniversary! I love it! After that we headed to a falls behind the hotel that was very pretty then went to the trailer and cooked spaghetti, homemade ... read more
