I have never heard a train go by and not wished I were on it. And so I found myself on the Via Rail "Canadian" that heads east from Vancouver. Nineteen hours after ambling through British Columbia we arrived in Jasper, Alberta. I slept in the chair overnight, and slept quite well. Trains are infinitely more comfortable than any bus or car, and remind me of more halcyon days of travel. Whoever waves from a bus, or waves at the travelers in a bus? We wave at trains and their passengers and they wave back. The train was long, possibly as many as twenty carriages, with two dining cars and three dome cars for a panoramic view. The scenery was fantastic as we followed the Fraser River, and then the Thompson River upstream. The highlight was ... read more

After a few days in Edmonton and as my boyfriend got four days off work, we decided to make a trip South into cattle country and the Rockies. The planning was extremely hectic and after having stopped at several Canadian Tire stores to find a two-bed tent, I was surprised when we actually drove out of Edmonton. Leaving Edmonton we took hwy 2 in the direction of Calgary, enjoying how the scenery changed from flat prairie to hills and laughing about how no mountains were visible in Mountain View Country (though I expect it to be because of the weather). On the way we stopped at Gasoline Alley south of Red Deer to get gas and an iced cap. Gasoline Alley is a lane which runs parallel to the highway for a long stretch midway between ... read more

What do you think of when the Rocky Mountains are mentioned? Towering snow-capped peaks? Forests of tall, green pine trees? Rushing rivers and waterfalls? Glacier-fed lakes of blue and green? Winter ski resorts? Bears? Coach loads of Japanese tourists? Yup, they’re all there – in spades. And we’ve got the pictures to prove it! From Calgary, our route first took us up into the foothills of the Rockies. Quickly, the scenery changed. All around us, through the coach windscreen ahead, from the windows to left and right, dark crags, topped with snow even now in late-June, rose majestically from lush green forests at their feet. We’ve seen mountains around the world, but never as magnificent nor as extensive as these. To use the modern vernacular, they were awesome! Along the way, we made a stop at ... read more

Crossed the border into Canada on Friday. The border guard was more interested in Hot Springs, AR and the hot springs there than he was what we had on board that might be contraband. He wanted to know if people could just go anytime and get into the springs. Once through the first guard, we had to go inside and declare the shotgun and bear spray we were taking in. Surprisingly, all we had to do was fill out a form and pay $25. In Calgary, we stayed at a campground next door to the Canada Olympic Park, home of the 1988 Winter Olympics. It would have been an interesting place to tour. However, we had plans to meet up with friends from Heritage and have dinner at the Calgary Tower, what was once the tallest ... read more

I left Chicago on June 5, 2011 headed out on this big adventure to Alaska, entered Saskatchewan from just North of Minot, N.D. in some heavy flood conditions. I arrived in Medicine Hat on the 8th to meet up with Lyn, Gary, Betty and Sybil at Cottonwood Coulee Golf and RV Park. Thursday we toured Medicine Hat and then had a generous dinner at Lyn's daughter and son-in-laws and met three of the charming granddaughters. Friday Lyn celebrated her daughters birthday wih the family, while we shopped around town, I hit golf balls and then we went to the Chuckwagon races at the Medicine Hat Stampede Grounds. There were 12 heats (races) and some pretty exciting action.... read more

Hi guys, I can't believe that more than one month is already over... and it is almost half time!=( I still had a really good time in the Rocky Mountains doing nice rides with the horses from the ranch (except for the small incident when Riette fell off the horse resulting in a mild concusion). One of the highlights in Valemount was the Rodeos! I wouldn't have thought that the western style as we know it from the movies and as we dress up for carneval really existed here! That was just amazing! I loved being around the real cowboys as a real cowgirl, even if it was just the High School Rodeos!:) I also went on a beautiful hike, the Swift Loop in the Rockies and walked to the Little Lost Lake to hang out ... read more

This blog was originally to consist of a blow by blow rendition of our trip from Vancouver Island over to Jasper and down to Banff. However, it needed an angle if it wasn’t simply going to be, “…and then we went there…” The angle hit me right there at the end; in my anxiety, my purpose and my excitement at finally seeing Moraine Lake, and capturing its image. This ‘angle’ hijacked the entire blog, and inevitably even the title; Why We Photograph? I take photographs to bolster my own ego, to make me look good, adventurous, to make people envy me, my lifestyle. I take pictures of the people and places that serve that end, that show the exciting places I’ve been, my skill as a photographer. Yet I only know what other people will appreciate ... read more

Here are pics from some of our favorite places from the second leg of our trip. Part 2 started on July 27th when we flew back to Salt Lake City to pick up the camper and truck that had been stored for a few weeks. We basically spent a week in Idaho, three weeks in Canada and then came down to Montana and Wyoming for the last couple of weeks before blasting home. The Canadian rockies are unique because of all the Glaciers and even in August the temps are in the 70’s and 40’s.... read more

A long and noisy night with only the sound of the train whistles every half hour echoing around the mountains making a difference. Woke up to find that the helecopter flight for today was cancelled. The visibility is simply too bad with the smoke from the forest fires further north. Spent a morning exploring and ended up at the railway station waiting for a train to come through. Two turned up at the same time, both over a mile long. This afternoon, went to sulphur mountain and took the cable car up. Met a lovely couple from northern ireland. Both Pam and this lady were very scared indeed. At the top, the weather cleared and we could see the rockies in all their splender. Loads of Chipmunks up there. Forgot to say that real mounties are ... read more
