After working January and February in SLC for Exum of Utah, I headed out on the road to Canada. The idea of spending some ice climbing time in the Rockies came about as I was linking up some climbs down in Ouray with Canadian climber and photographer Jon Walsh. We figured that Canada would be a great place to go on an ice climbing binge and March would be a good time as I would be done with work and he would be back from a trip down in Patagonia. So, there I was, on the road to Canada in my sweet gear loaded car and with a stack of audiobooks to keep me company on the drive. It would take me 18h of driving to get to Golden, BC, amongst which 2hours were spent ... read more

They said on the trip criteria that no alpine ski touring experience was necessary and a 'moderate' level of fitness was required, which is a bit like telling an office worker that running for the bus in the morning is adequate training for running the London Marathon......!! The Wapta Icefields are comprised of a series of Glaciers that run along the Continental Divide from Peyto Lake to the North and the Trans Canada Highway to the south. The area is vast, covering some 2500 sq km, and is possibly one of the most beautiful places that you can choose to spend your time, a feeling that is intensified by the exposure and element of ... read more

It was time to head off again into the unknown so today we started our leisurely journey northwards towards Jasper, taking the scenic Bow Valley Parkway. Not wanting to break with recent convention, we decided the opportunity called for another hike - this time, to the 'Inkpots' via Johnston Canyon. Johnston Canyon was impressive but somewhat overdeveloped, with paved paths and guiderails to 'stop you falling in' and suing someone - i.e. preventing natural selection. The Inkpots, further afield, turned out to be a series of surreal little pools, all slightly different colours, dotted prettily about a stunning mountain valley. As usual, we had the place completely to ourselves. Next, we had the clever idea of stopping for the night at a little campground along the Icefields Parkway (take good note of the name - ice ... read more

Saturday morning, we left around 11:30 for Kananaskis Country, where a work party had been organized to help prepare Don and Becca’s new house in the park for them to occupy it. Don’s family all came to help - his parents, his brother Doug and Michelle, and their four children. I have no idea what all got done because most people were working inside the house. Michelle and I (Katherine) and the kids worked in the back yard, sanding and painting the shelves from all the closets, and the kitchen cupboard doors, with plenty of help from Jenna, Britta, Ben, and Kessa. It was a warm sunny day, but fortunately there was a steady breeze which helped keep us all from getting overheated. This work was rewarded! At 5:30, we knocked off and took off for ... read more
