We are blessed with a beautiful, sunny, 72 degree, no humidity day here in California. Summers here are great. We are glad we don’t have to fight with traffic this morning so skipping San Francisco was a good decision. This part of CA is flat on one side of the highway and has rolling brown hills on the other. There were several windmills on the hills, and lots of fruit and nut trees, grape vines, and other crops. Every so often you would see signs protesting the water shortage caused by congress. We are looking forward to sleeping at a KOA tonight with free WiFi, swimming pool, hook ups, and showers! It will feel like a resort! As we got about 50 miles from LA you could already see the heavy smog in the air. In ... read more

We were able to see the Pacific Ocean this morning! We also saw a sea lion! It was so neat to see it in the wild. Now we are heading down US 101 to see the forest of redwoods and the coast. We went on a big adventure trying to go whale watching. They had spotted 5 whales yesterday and told us where to go, but it was up this very narrow steep road and the further we went up, the more we were wondering if we were going to be able to turn around. But the view from the top was spectacular as you could see the ocean way below and the shoreline with big rocks. We didn’t get to see any whales, but it was worth it for the view. Dan thankfully found a ... read more

We are heading for California and have about 1200 miles to go in the next 3 days. We have places we want to see on the way down but will see how far we get as Dan has to make it for graduation! Washington is very pretty also and reminds us of TN with all the rolling hills, tall green trees, and the lakes from the bay. We were close to Seattle but didn’t get to see it. One good thing was that it was a beautiful day in Seattle today and we missed the rain! We did get to see Mount Ranier and Mt Saint Helen’s while we were driving. It was weird to see rolling hills then all of a sudden one tall mountain out of nowhere. They both were pretty, but we are ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Victoria June 11th 2010

Thankfully no rain today, just partly cloudy. It’s in the low 60’s today so it’s getting warmer! We we were able to see Vancouver from a distance as we headed to Victoria, BC. No mountains or hills here so easy driving for Dan. As we get closer the sky is clearing up so praising God for good weather again! Too bad we didn’t plan ahead for this excursion though. We knew we had to ride a ferry to get to Victoria but didn’t know how much it would cost until we pulled up to the gate. Dan estimated $80 and I thought that was too much, but I don’t want you to faint like we did so I won’t tell you the cost!. Since our “rig” is 42 feet long, we were charged EXTRA. It was ... read more

Feel bittersweet to leave Banff today. It has been wonderful here. Had to do laundry before we left as the boys have only been able to wear jeans one time and they get filthy. Thankfully there was a laundry mat only 5 minutes away. The downside is that it cost $24 to do 4 loads of laundry. While we were doing laundry we were able to eat breakfast, take showers and break down camp which is pretty easy after 2 weeks on the road. We left Banff at around 11:30 and are heading to Victoria, BC on our way down to California. We have 5 days to get there and about 1800 miles to go. We had great weather when we left, but as we headed towards the west coast we ran into rain and fog. ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper National Park June 11th 2010

So glad to sleep in a little bit this morning. Decided to head to Jasper NP which is just north of Banff about 2 ½ hours. We stopped at a ½ mile trail and hiked to a falls. There was a hole in the rock beside the waterfall kind of like a cave that we walked through and were able to see the falls just a few feet away. The boys loved the cave! They got tired on this hike, but did well. Nathan keeps scaring us to death though. He is our little adventurous one who loves to explore and see what’s down by the rushing river or what’s around the next corner so he just runs and bounces everywhere! We have told him a hundred times I bet to “stay on the trail”,” stay ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park June 8th 2010

We went to visit the famous Banff Springs Hotel. We were greeted at the door with a man dressed in a kilt who promptly informed us that we could only visit the bottom 2 floors since we were not staying there. He was nice but we noticed a “rich” atmosphere here. The stores where we were allowed go were all top scale and price. On that note, Dan found a zoom lens for my camera that will allow me to zoom without changing lenses all the time, which I have been doing a lot this trips. It was way to much money but he bought it and said Happy Anniversary! I love it! After that we headed to a falls behind the hotel that was very pretty then went to the trailer and cooked spaghetti, homemade ... read more

Got to sleep in a little bit this morning. We are still trying to adjust to the two hour time difference and the sunset being so late, but felt rested. After breakfast we headed back down to the town of Banff to finish some souvenir shopping. This is a very quaint little town and surrounded by beautiful mountains. Dan bought a down coat for a good price. As he said he will probably only wear it 2 times per year once we get back home, but up here it will come in handy! We ate at a Mexican restaurant for lunch called Magpie and Stump and it was great. Then we headed to the Banff Gondola. I hadn’t really heard of that term before, but it is a ride in a tiny box hanging from a ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff June 4th 2010

Woke up to another pretty day, but the wind is strong here today and makes 55 degrees feel like 30. We went on a 2 ½ hour boat tour ride in the Waterton Lake this morning. They had an upper deck you could set on so we went up for the first half and nearly froze to death! The wind from the boat made it feel like 0 degrees…BRRR. On the boat ride we crossed the Canadian American border as this park is an international peace park with Glacier NP in Montana. There were two Homeland & Security agents from the US that were aboard and they stayed at the very remote small customs office on the US side. We could get off the boat and walk around the lake a little bit but if you ... read more

We stayed at a truck stop in Shelby, MT last night and thankfully our gas heat works in our trailer so we were nice and warm. We drove only 35 miles to the Canadian border. It is barren out here too. We were told at the Canadian customs that Dan has automatic dual citizenship in the US and Canada and that the boys could get their’s also if they applied. We drove another 2 hours to Waterton Lakes Park. We probably won’t be going into Glacier NP in the US as this is pretty enough. Our campsite is right at the base of the snow capped mountains and a beautiful lake. It is paradise here. Thankfully the weather is beautiful and much warmer. It is 57 right now and a gentle breeze is blowing. Here in ... read more
