A lovely day here in Dubai. We travelled in a spotlessly clean air conditioned train through the outskirts of the city to yet another shopping mall. Everything here is inside a Mall..,I guess it's to keep out if the heat especially in the summer. Again it was very busy therevwere 650+ stores plus restaurants and a new cinema in construction. Staying in the residential area is quite a different experience to the tourist hotel zone. It us much quieter in the day as everyone is obviously at work, and the waterfront is noticeably calm. We are very close to the Royal Yacht Club which we walked past but I did not feel suitably dressed to go in! Those we did see were in designer labels and 6 inch heels dripping with gold! But I guess they ... read more

We left Mumbai this morning after a slight altercation with the Indian Police who refused to allow us to enter the airport because we didn't have a paper ticket. We have no tickets it's all been via our passports..,which the Police took off me! Eventually a more senior Policeman took the passports and led us to the Emirates desk to see the list of people they were holding but that was a list of people who had checkedin on line. It took a few minutes for the Emirates staff to explain we just needed to go through to check in (obviously my explanation of the same thing was found wanting!) I think its because in India everything is so paper based. When Brian bought underwear in Marks and Spencer he paid with a card, entered the ... read more

My Tale from Dubai Well here it is my first post to my new blog. I am three weeks on the road now so I have a bit of catching up to do. It all began on the 2nd of January, after long and sometimes emotional good-byes in Spain and Ireland, I finally set off. First stop Dubai. My reasons for visiting to Dubai for more than a day or two was to catch up with Martin and Polina and, after 15 years, meet my old pal from my St Thomas´and ITU course days, Angie, her two beautiful little girls, Sophie and Molly and husband Johnny. Dubai was much as I expected really, a lot of glitz and glamour but not a huge amount of soul. Having said that Angie took me, with her Mum, on ... read more

Geo: 25.2561, 55.2477Woken at 3am uk time (7am dubai) on board QF002 with just 60 minutes to landing and breakfast is served, pretty ordinary just a cheese and onion toasted sandwich! It appears Celina watched a movie and didn't sleep too well, I slept the. Whole journey as I was well and truly exhausted, and the kids had a pretty good sleep.Airport is huge and extremely exotic, big columns, very high ceilings, lots of glass, waterfalls, palms and LED lights, very nice indeed and very clean. Cleared customs without any issue and proceeded to the exit where we arranged a larger than normal cab as we are now five people and 11 bags plus carry on....it is amazing how much we travel with...things will have to change big time, next time!!!!!Whilst Dubai has a population of just ... read more

Escaping the winter in England seems like a good excuse to get away to sunnier climes and as I have said before I am lucky with the locations my kids have chosen to live ...so here I am in Dubai at Suzanne's for a month. It is now 10 years since I lived here and the changes have been enormous and seem to continue. On my last visits I tried out the new metro and linking busses to get around - this time it's a new Tram system which links up to the metro around the Dubai Marina area and is set to go further in Phase 2. There are also water busses which take you from the Marina all the way to the old Creek area of Dubai. The ease with which you can use ... read more

Friday 16/1/15Landed in Dubai and have instructions to ask at connection desk re onward boarding pass. All ok and we can just pick it up at the gate. Or not...Another half hour standing at a desk and they agree that a manual pass can be printed and Ian will be allowed to board. Does that mean he will be ok to enter NZ??? All this and it's only just 6am (my time) quite tired really. The flight was ok, got some gluten free food and watched 1 and a half films, hopefully will get to see the other half on next flight. The airbus 380 is massive and unfortunately the gate is not! People standing and sitting on the floor. Starting to board now though. Managed to board watched 2nd half of Boyhood. Am ... read more

We have spent a wonderful 3 days and nights in Dubai and it is indeed a wonder to see. The architecture is unbelievable, especially when you consider that not too long ago Dubai was a desert. We did all the touristy things we could cram in while we were there, but decided that we can't keep up the crazy pace...it's hard work travelling! Anyway, we started by visiting the indoor ski slope in the Emirates Mall ( it's like a mini winter wonderland) and then headed to the Marina and the end of the Palm where we visited Atlantis, where they have a hotel and a waterpark to die for..it is truely amazing what they have built here! We also visited the Dubai Mall which is next to the Burj Khalifa ( wow what a sight, not ... read more

Geo: 25.27, 55.3328 December - 3 January DubaiThis is going to be a short blog, mostly photographs. As we have said before we generally do not like cities but we did want to see Dubai which is part of the UAE and the hub for Emirates Airline, so we decided to stop over en route to New Zealand. Was it worth it? It is interesting to see and we were lucky in having chosen reasonable accommodation close to a metro station and then luckily being upgraded to a one bedroom apartment with sitting/dining area, kitchen (including a washing machine), large bedroom and bathroom. So we were very comfortable especially appreciated as Jim had a cold requiring us to stay in one day. When it comes to describing Dubai I have difficulty knowing where to start! It is an ... read more

Day 2 and keith starts the day in true adventurous tourist style! Kellogs cornflakes! Followed by scrambled egg on toast with beans, I was so tempted to ask if they were Heinz! We spent news day on the beach in temps of 27? it seems so unreal, that I can lay and listen to the sea and read my book without having to be on life guard dutyor not reading the same page 3 times and my name being called 4 000 times! At times I really think I have gone deaf. Keith finished the day in true adventurous style, back at the same restaurant having the same thing as the night before. Day 3 Mission AU After a lazy morning we took a trip out to Dubia mall, the largest shopping centre with 1,200 retail outlets ... read more
