The first destination on our big adventure was Dubai. Both Dubai and KL have always been viewed as places to break up the flight on our way to Melbourne. However, since it was the start of our trip we took full advantage and tried to fit in some of the main things Dubai has to offer. We booked to stay in the 4* Media One Hotel located in the Media City - we chose this because it was close to the Marina which we had heard so much about. As soon as we landed the heat was incredible even though it was 9am! The Media One driver was brilliant, pointing out landmarks and recommending things to do which was a great help. The hotel itself was fine, had everything it said it did and everything we ... read more

The city with the largest mall in the world and so many others within a relatively small area. but not so difficult a choice for us, all designer shops and way beyond our budgets for the most part. This is the final leg of our adventure and we are very weary and our bodies are feeling the stress we have subjected them to over the last month. Our first priority is getting to the hotel after a red eye flight from Livingston, Zimbabwe. We take the train to the marina area then grab a taxi to the hotel. We are too early for check in but just in time for the buffet breakfast. Yummy in all respects. We have very exclusive dinner reservations for this evening at the seven star hotel Burj al Arab. It's Angie's ... read more

Day One On Sunday Donna and I planned on experiencing the authenticity of Dubai by exploring their culture. We had a fantastic time at The Dubai Mall, enjoyed some traditional food, and even got a chance to watch a thrilling camel race! We woke up quite early that morning and found an aura of excitement was engulfing everyone at our hotel. Luckily the staff spoke English well enough to explain to us what all the buzz was about. It was apparently a time of the year when everyone is usually headed to the closest mall for a grand shopping festival. This of course captured Donna's attention, and we were off to rent a car and started driving to the mall. As we were driving, we were engulfed in the noise of continuous honking and the loud ... read more

Early start, got to catch a taxi at 0330, wake up at 0130, 0200, 0230, etc. Rain starts bucketing, taxi guy arrives, I load my stuff (got to love Australian taxi guys), get in, rain stops. Smooth trip in to the airport, check in (no complimentary upgrade), pick up Euro, pass through security with money belt securely fixed- body scanning machine says no money belt to be worn - have to take it off - OMG!!!!, I can feel a major disaster coming on... Heading to a country where you can't access an ATM, or a bank account, or a travel money card, or a credit card, the memories of losing my money last year are somewhat traumatic- at least in Nepal I could get some cash; in Iran there is no such luxury. World banking ... read more

Geo: 25.27, 55.33It was so nice to have a stopover in Dubai, had a great nights sleep. I was a little annoyed the travel agent had sent us out to a hotel in the middle of nowhere, 30 minutes from the airport. HOWEVER we were located right next to the Mall of the Emirates. We had the morning to fill and Dubai had awesome shopping - who knew??There is a ski field at the shopping centre complete with ski lift. As my snowboarding skills are so awesome we considered it, but G had forgotten her fluffy ear muffs so that was the end of that idea. So shopping it was. Wow. Cheap. And very successful. Now G's shopping is all in my suitcase to carry around. So good. Need to find a fedex tomorrow to ship ... read more

There isn't anymore......Eight weeks ago we left cold Canberra for a European summer holiday and what an adventure we've had! We have been a guest in 12 countries, enjoyed their food, wine, beer and embraced their culture. Along the way we have met up with friends and we have met and made new friends also. George drove Pablo over 5,000 kilometres and we walked over 500 kilometres! We are all a little tired and ready to go home. The past few days have been spent relaxing in Dubai. Even though the temperature has been over 40 degrees each day it hasn't bothered us at all, I think that is because the last part of our holiday was in Greece and Turkey where it was very hot! Dubai is an incredible place, a huge city built in ... read more

Day 2 in Dubai, (I'm late posting this because we've now been in Denmark a few days catching up with family, but better late than never, right?) After a lazy start we decide to brave the heat to go out for a walk in the local area. Mostly computer stores on our street so we venture down another way where we find lots of stores selling traditional Indian and muslim clothing. The colours are vibrant and the fabrics are beautiful. I stop to admire a beautiful Indian sari in red white and black and the store owner immediately dashes out of the store and wants me to come in and try it on. No thanks I say but he continues to beckon as we keep walking down the street. Every time we linger outside a store ... read more

I arrived safe and sound in Dubai after a pleasant 7 hour flight from London Heathrow. I hadn't booked to do anything on my first day in Dubai as I knew I'd be pretty tired from the two previous days of travelling. I took a walk around the area I was staying in and visited a mall and had a lovely big piece of chocolate cheesecake and a coffee in a nice cafe. It was very hot in Dubai, around 40-41 degrees and so the mall and it's air conditioning came as a great relief. I tried to get to grips with the exchange rate between the United Arab Emirates Dirhams and the British Pound and worked out that 10 Dirhams was equivalent to around £1.60. On my second day in Dubai, I had booked ... read more

I was planning a trip to China to spend two weeks there and as I am booking my trip, I saw the option to fly into Dubai. I have always wanted to see Dubai ever since the city grew in the early 2000s so I gathered some extra money and was able to spend 24 hours in Dubai. Now I can see why many people call it one of the greatest cities in the world! Here is a short summary of my 24 hours in Dubai. Visiting Sega Republic Sega Republic is a theme park revolving around Sonic the Hedgehog and other popular Sega games. With over 170 arcade games and 14 attractions, it was hard to not spend all my 24 hours here! My favourite attraction was the Sonic Hopper. This ride took you 9 ... read more
