We landed in Dubai fairly early and as our room wasn’t quite ready, we dumped our bags and headed over the road to the Dubai Museum. The story of Dubai is a fascinating one, from humble fishing port to discovering that pot of oil and onto a tourist mega city and the museum covered the huge pace of change that has taken this city. Videos of fisherman laying their daily catch out on the beach some 50 years ago gave some sense of early Dubai but the museum didn’t quite delve far enough. I would have liked to see some ‘then and now’ picture comparisons, but instead got stuffed animals which make those on Crap Taxidermy (look it up on twitter) look realistic. Saturday 25 April Sadly the whole 100th anniversary of Gallipoli has passed us by. We had originally planned to be in Sydney for this but then that didn’t work out so we opted for London. However we couldn’t get the accommodation we wanted that night (due in large part to the London Marathon being on the 26th) so we ended up in Dubai, where there isn’t a strong ex-pat contingent. Not to worry though as we will go to Gallipoli in July. Our last day in Dubai. A good solid sleep and Zachary actually slept until 7:30ish. This did rather hinder our plans to make an early trip to the beach though so instead we headed out to the old Al Fahidi fort which houses the Dubai Museum. So i’m a week into my round the world trip. I’m currently sitting on the plane flying to Colombo, Sri Lanka. I’m lucky to be sat here as I stupidly set my alarm an hour late! Thanks to my friend KT, a Michael Schumacher inspired taxi driver and over 50 ‘excuse me’s’ whilst racing through the airport, I manage to just make my flight - phew! So Dubai was great and bad strange all at the same time. Not a place I would ordinarily visit as it’s very bling and in constant construction and i'd say the overall sense I got was it is one of money, power and partying. d. 11. Februar. Ny tidszone, uret 2 timer frem. Ankom sent om aftenen kl. 12. Kæmpe lufthavn, ikke sparet på noget. Jeg bilder mig selv ind der var pumpet bageri duft ud på toiletterne. Mærkeligt at stå der, og dufte lækkert bagværk dog pludselig blandet med noget mindre lækkert. Prøv med citron duft! – Generelt synes man en del af deres valg er spøjse. Der er massere af penge, og man har lynhurtigt skabt et samfund uden at have megen erfaring at bygge på. Derfor er det ikke alle valg der fornuftigt hænger sammen med deres brug, men mere bare har været en kopi af vesterlandske samfund og deres standarder og ideer. My visit to the great city of Dubai started off as just a stepping stone on my way to India; a trip I was taking soon with my dear friend Natalia and her sister Tati. Dubai is one of seven city states that make up the United Arab Emirates, and it is an exceedingly lavish city. Even flying to Dubai on the Emerites A380 airline was quite a nice experience, and it's definitely one of the most comfortable long flights I've ever taken. Nothing is impossible or too expensive to build here. For example, if you want a huge island in the shape of a palm tree, Dubai says, "Yes of corse we can build that! And that is just the beginning!"
