I had written a most descriptive entry yesterday and it disappeared into the ether as I was tring to publish it...I'll try again. I left off blogging when I was preparing to go to Cirque de Soleil .WOW what a show those people put on. The strength ,agility ,control and focus of the performers was amazing. I had never been to one of their performances before and Now I understand why peoople wax eloquent about them . The show was Quilam and there were about 45 performers involved...each more accomplished than the next. The show was more than 2 hours long and I think the 2nd half was even better than the first...It is the first time they have played in the UAE and they were here for the shopping festival. Judging from the crowds they ... read more

Hey not much been happening since last time I spoke, went out for the first time here last night and had a pretty big night. Went to a club called 'Peppermint' last night, it was pretty good too, good music, good crowd but very expensive to drink (about $13 a drink) and almost $40 just to get in, but it was worth it. I was booked to leave tomorrow midday but staying an extra day now so that I'm not arriving into London stuffed from the big weekend I just had, plus I'm dredding going from a hot place to a clold one, everyday I look at the London temp and damn it's not to warm. I have already started applying for jobs in London already. I sent off a few applications for bar work and ... read more

Well Dubai is a pretty amazing place to visit, the food is great, they have a variety of pretty much anything australia would have, the people seem to be ok and the shopping is awsome! I went to the 'Emirates mall' today which is supposed to be the biggest mall in the world, and yep I'd proberly agree with it to. The style of cloths here is unreal to, after having a look around the shops makes me hate everything I brought and wished I had of just waited till I got here before I brought anything back home and in Bangkok. The prices of stuff here vary from Oz, like food is about the same price as home, the cloths are maybe half the price which is good and taxis are pretty cheap to. Also ... read more

One of the crosses I had to bear in my role of heading up the trading desk for Queensland Sugar was that I was expected to make regular presentations at International Sugar Conferences, which usually occurred every couple of years. Yes, I know, dirty job but someone had to do it! My final such stint, held some 6 months before I took early retirement from QSL, was held in Dubai. Now they tend not to go too down-market for these conferences, and this was no exception as it was held at the extremely comfortable Park Hyatt complex. This luxury hotel is situated very centrally in Dubai, on the banks of the renowned Dubai Creek (and trust me, a ‘creek’ in Dubai bears little similarity with your local suburban creek!), which even had its own golf course ... read more

Well yesterday I did the main thing I wanted to do while here in Dubai, snowboarding!! And yeah, it was pretty cool, I wont go into describing it to much as I got enough photos for you to get the whole idea of it. The wierd part was that it was almost 30 degrees buying my ticket to snowboard then you walk through some double doors to minus something temperatures. It was pretty much like a fake mountain slope with restaurants and hotels surrounding the slop with the usual stuff like jumps, half-pipes, ski-lift, and it even snows inside. ... read more

Dubai is in the midst of the annual 45 day shopping festival . There are people here from all over the Arab world shopping for everything from private airplanes ,gold, diamonds, silks and satins ,cars and ALL things that are found in malls ,and entertainment. The city has been compared to both Hong Kong and New York visually and for the goods it has for sale. In addition to shopping there are cultural activities including the Heritage Village which we explored last night that has many demonstration sites , food creation ,arabian horses , pearl diving ,traditional clothing design and music and dance. I especially enjoyed the bagpipe/drumming group and regret that we didn't get to see the brass band preform. Earlier in the week we had gone to the Global Village which is llike a worlds fair. ... read more

Dubai has been home for us for the last 12 months, still we have not found our feet in this city of Bling. We are generally opened to conversation and learnings that provide a new culture, but a year seems to have past rushing by and no deep understanding of this place has been achieved.... Yes, I suppose I feel frustrated with my incompetence to feel grounded in the place we've called home for a year, however I also feel relieved when I remember new adventures are heading our way and a plane will be flying us to new pastures in 6 weeks....am I wrong? Have I lost sight of the traveler’s passion to learn, to be able to admire even the dirtiest of roads and enjoy the craziest of foods while in alien lands?.... Dubai ... read more

Brought Dom the guy who I'm staying with a bottle of red wine duty free for a present for letting me stay and then i jumped into a taxi an headed ... read more

The title is from a friend who used it to describe Dubai and I think it is quite appropriate. The buildings here are absolutely amazing .Each highrise is a work of art that presents itself as a proud (possibly arrogant) ,distinctly unique masterpiece. They are everywhere not just in a little cluster and are both offices and residences. One of the buildings underconstruction is planning on being the tallest in the world. So far it is 100 stories but they have not finalized the plans. Today I spent time at the Dubai Museum and discovered a bit about the history of this area. There are archeological sites that go back 1000's of years! The museum was really informative about the way of life and the customs and the traditions of the people.I really enjoyed it. September 27 - 30, 2006 Wednesday Having decided to forego Turkey for the time being we had a few weeks in our itinerary to fill. The ten days in Thailand with its easy living and terrific food was a simple enough addition. One of Roger’s old friends who currently lives in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates offering to host a short visit to her exotic city made for an equally appealing layover as we made our way to Europe. We arrived in Dubai at 5:30 in the morning and to a pre-dawn temperature of over ninety degrees. After making our way through one of the more thorough customs screenings we have experienced we caught a cab and arrived at our friend’s around 6:30 and slept for a few hours. Our stay in Dubai coincided with ... read more
