In two weeks I was able to visit most of the popular places in Dubai together with my sister and a friend. I realised that it is definately more fun to be in Dubai with someone else and definately someone who can take you around in Dubai. Dubai has awesome shopping with malls like Ibin Battuta and Mall of Emirates that have brands from all over the world! Expensive but definately a unique experience. The mall is divided into several styles taken from different countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Persia, India, & China. Ibin Battuta is the name of a very famous traveler from the Arab region and therefore they intend for the visitor to have a similar experience of traveling from one country to the other. Dubai Museum is a must visit too! Learn about the ... read more

We woke up to a balmy, overcast 65 degrees F and enjoyed a quiet breakfast on our verandah. We ventured into the cruise terminal at 08:00 AM to meet our guide Lissie—originally from Waterford, Ireland, but who has lived in Dubai for 29 years (a temporary detour on her relocation to Australia). She told us about the quaint town by the sea, she first came to live in, that has exploded into a najor port metropolis expanding at a rate of 10-15% per year in building and population with massive traffic jams to match. She also mentioned how the native Dubai population has decreased to 25% with the large influx of Indians, Pakistanis, Saudis, Iranians, Brits, Americans and other Europeans making up the rest. We drove along the shore front road past beautiful homes and modern ... read more

Woke up to a glorious day with cool breezes and warm sunshine. We could see the coast of Oman and U.A.E. on our port side. We played trivia this morning at 10 AM and placed 2nd yet again. Looks like our time to play with the Big Dogs has finally arrived !! We noticed large buildings on our port side and realized we were close to the port of Dubai. We watched anxiously as the ship was docked and had a perfect view of the welcome show and band, complete with red carpet. Helen and I decided to try and take a taxi to the gold and spice souk. We were greeted by 8 beautiful little girls dressed in pink and gold, who gave us each a long stemmed rose and poured rose water on our ... read more

Monday 4th December Best to start off with the dramatis personae - Chris, erstwhile good guy, hero, world saver and idiot. Kathy, Chris’ crutch, mother to our two sons Jamie and Ben, all round marvel Andy, father to Jack and Poppy, estate agent and genuinely nice guy, wicked sense of humour. Ronnie, mother to Jack and Poppy, mad, bubbly, fun to be with, equally wicked sense of humour, Just four people from Hollingbourne, setting off to the Desert! We are off! Uneventful drive to the airport, it gets dark bloody quick these days. Car park easy to find, only two U-Turns. Got to Terminal 3 and no queues! Check in and three hours to kill. We now know why they ask for the 3 hour check-in window. It’s for the poor saps who actually turn up ... read more

Anyway, Anul. Not an adjective but the name of our very nice waiter at the pool. At least we think he must be, but can’t fully understand what he says. Shame really as he spent about half an hour talking to us and cleaning Ronnie & Kathy’s glasses while Andy & Chris had gone exploring (aka gone to the bar). Nice pool, two feet deep and two life guards just in case we get out of our depth. Likely to find more liquid coming our way from the bar than what’s in the pool. And what to do when in Dubai? Go for an Indian. Very nice. You’d all be proud of us. We were in bed by 10pm (6pm UK time, which is startling). Even us hardy warriors can’t cope with a night’s sleep lost ... read more

What a journey, we defintely dont want it to end, but before we get all solemn and depressed, what have we been up to since the last Dubai update? We have been shopping to Karama (a town full of shops with so much fake stuff its incredible) but we love it, and its the home of yummy shawarmas, a must have for anyone travelling to Dubai, just a posh chicken kebab with tahini , mmmm mmmm! It rained all day when we were there but didnt matter, we just shopped till we literally dropped. The rest of the time we have chilled and eaten lots, and more shopping at the Mall of the Emirates. Steve is impressed with me as I have only bought for others this holiday, whereas he has bought for himself and others ... read more

How do I explain Dubai (especially since I was there for little over 48 hours, and what time I did spend there was mostly at the rugby field)... I was able to change my transfer in Dubai to a stop over and was lucky enough to get a ticket from Robin to watch the IRB Sevens tournament. It was so much fun. I arrived late Thursday to the new experience of a Muslim country. I felt like I had neon flashing lights on me, sticking out even more so than in Europe! I woke up early Friday morning, and made my way deeper into the desert to the Exiles rugby fair grounds. I may have been on the Arabian Gulf, but a rugby event is a rugby event is a rugby event. Stands full of drunk ... read more

Link to the video I made of the pictures and video on YOUTUBE.com: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQLJ4zy_jgs --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dubai is a combination between Las Vegas, Miami Beach and all the planets in Star Wars. It has huge buildings with tons of lights and things to catch your eye, there are man-made waterfalls everywhere, flashy Bentleys and Porsches everywhere you look and even the taxis are BMWs. The Miami Beach part brings a lot of palm trees and a beach with lots of men in thongs. Star Wars comes in with Dubai’s huge building, called the Burj Al Arab, with a bar that hangs off the top in an oval shape and on the other side has a huge helicopter-landing pad. At night they have a sequence of 8 colors that illuminate the side of the building. It’s pretty much ... read more

Everyone can tell you that in the winter months Dubai has a perfect climate. Average temperature is about 25 degrees, and with only five wet days per year the conditions are perfect for wandering along some of the beautiful beaches, around the old town and especially down by the creek. For info (should you be planning a trip to Dubai) December 2nd is one of the 5 wet days. It rains all day. And into the night too. Roads flood (you can't really justify drainage when rain is so rare), taxis become rarer than dodo doodoo and no-one knows where to go (except the shopping mall). Luckily we started the day in good cheer- a mammoth 14 hour sleepathon from the babe meant that we were all refreshed and good tempered, despite the weaher. So, what ... read more
