I arrived here @ 2am on the 23rd and it is truly a new world. After the age and stability that Istanbul represents Dubai is a city in motion...outward and upward. The population is growing everyday and the Shiek and administration of the emirate are planning for the future after oil .Tourism is the second largest industry and they are developping it rapidly. There is construction going on everywhere .Offices ,apartments ,hotels ,resorts each more spectacular than those built previously...last month. Today we attended a special Robbie Burns day meal and celebration at a friend of Lesley's. Their apartment ,on the 28th floor with an incredible view of the Persian Gulf 'is considered old . It was built in 2001! Lesley has a series of activities planned while I am here and I am looking forward ... read more

Our Just Deserts in Dubai Wasting Time in the Morning 1/18/2007 - We woke up as usual yesterday but felt tired…very tired. I guess jet lag isn’t as easy to get over as it used to be!! Either way, we headed for some breakfast and then went to explore the hotel. Since we were planning to take a tour out into the desert at 3:15ish, we had some time to kill around the hotel. There is a decently sized shopping area as part of our hotel complex. To get there you can walk across a bridge or take one of the canal boats. Kel had been dying to take a canal boat so this was an obvious choice. The boat driver asked us if we wanted a tour of the whole hotel complex which we ... read more

Arrived in Dubai at about 6:30am local time. Managed to overcome the shock I had at Brisbane airport... of being slugged just over 400 AUD for excess luggage. Twelve kilos over, mind you. Bloody heck. I'm taking up Mum's suggestion of looking into posting a few things over to the UK, because surely that'll have to be cheaper than paying the same again for the remainder of the flight. Crikey. The flight was good. Not too much turbulence, and there was enough to do to keep entertained. It was so weird to be flying over and out of Australia. Every now and again, I could see towns below, and tried to figure out which one it might be. Saw a few thunderstorms... flew through at least one. It was even more of a strange sensation flying ... read more

Shopping and Getting Acclimated in Dubai Dubai Shopping is Ginormous Today we forced ourselves out of bed at 8am despite the fact that we had gone to sleep less than 5 hours earlier. Sometimes the best way to deal with jet-lag is to just force yourself to get acclimated. After breakfast, which was similar to breakfast in Europe just higher quality, we went down to the concierge to make some reservations for our stay. In Dubai hotel personel are very cognizant of the awards that are given in the area for best service given by individuals and staffs. The concierge staff of the Madinat Jumeirah won best concierge staff for Dubai in 2005 and one of their staff members won concierge of the year in 2006. While these awards might sound dumb to some of ... read more

The Tricky Path to Dubai Traveling is Never Easy Today we left Germany, and Europe as a whole, for the Middle East. Our final destination for the day was the Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The UAE is one of the most liberal countries in the Middle East and therefore is very accepting of travelers from other cultures. Dubai has capitalized on this openness and has become one of the world’s top tourist destinations. This city, directly located on the Gulf, is rapidly building resorts and luxury style houses which attract the world’s rich and famous. We packed all of our stuff, mailed some postcards, and headed for the airport. Since we were staying close to the train station, the easiest way to the airport was the S-bahn underground. While we had some ... read more

We'd liked to have written a bit sooner about Dubai, but the place we were staying had all these controls on the internet, and our host was never there for us to get him to relax some of them. So here we are, now in the UK, writing about what we got up to in Dubai. Despite all the internet controls, we stayed with a great host, Michael, in an awesome apartment by Dubai marina. We were on the 38th floor with awesome views along the beach, about halfway between the Jumeira Palm and Jebel Ali Palm developments. Luxury I'm sure we could become accustomed to! We managed to see and do quite a bit in Dubai, thanks to having a hire car. I guess if we'd had to pay for accomodation, the budget might not ... read more

So here we are,8 months of saving, working in a no hope job,no social life, all for this, to be back travelling again. I said my farewells which were quite strange when your saying "see you in 2 years" and 6 hours later im in my first port of call Dubai. Strangely I was devoid of emotion In the lead up,my brain feels dead.Wether it was the drinking and no sleep, stress and jetlag leading up to getting there or what I dunno ,but As soon as I landed I expected a wave of emotion and excitement to hit me "FREEDOM!!" but it never happened. I'd arranged to stay at my friends aunties who despite never really meeting me before treated me like gold. We started off with getting lost!! which was last thing I needed due to ... read more

So, as the lazy expat wife of time pulls up the duvet of destiny, 2006 slid away to reveal 2007. There are plenty of the "best of 2006" lists going round the intraweb, and they all asume that their opinion is the most valid, which since they don't list my opinion, makes them all wrong, although the "Top 10 Lame Excuses As to How This Unfeasably Large Object Got Shoved Up There" are pretty close to my personal choices. Anyway, we took a ride out to Hatta the other day, with all the rain we've had recently we thought that the wadis would be in full flow and the pools brimming. We were a bit disappointed, the dam was less than 10% full, the trickle down the main Hatta Wadi was less than a foot deep ... read more

Whenever we had an icy cold shower or no shower at all, or got leg cramps from using squat toilets, James and I would say just one word: ‘Jumeirah’. The hotel was intended to be our little slice of luxury on this trip. It turned out to be a massive wedge of indulgence! We left our hostel and headed for the airport (reason: free pickup by the hotel only available from the airport, and it was cheaper to get a taxi to the airport than to the hotel). Once there we met our driver who loaded our gear into our transfer car, a top of the line Mercedes van. We sat quite happily on our leather seats, adjusted our headrests and started reading the complimentary newspapers. It took us about 30 minutes to get to our ... read more

Back in Cairo again. Coming back to the King Hotel was like coming home again - the place was so familiar, even though we had only been there three times. We had two nights here before our flight to Dubai. The first night was our final night together as a group so we went out to dinner at a restaurant/pub recommended by our guide. The food was ok but the prices and atmosphere were not so great. Most of us drifted back to the hotel well before 10pm. The morning saw various members of our group head their separate ways - some to further travel or other hotels in Cairo or Alexandria, others to Europe to meet up with friends and family while the rest of us stayed on at the King for our final night. ... read more
