As most of you know from my last entry I am working on a pretty cool project. Well we have just held a design workshop over the last three days and as part of that workshop we were taken on a tour of the Jumeirah Madinat Resort. This resort consists of 2 hotel, a souk and a conference centre. In particular we saw the inside of the Al Qasr......and it was amazing! I just wish that I had the funds to stay in hotels like this. The view of the Burj is from the Royal suite which is an entire level of the hotel by itself! Just fantastic. The chadelier is worth US$100,000 and was designed by Swarvorski. It was just stunning.... read more

first leg • The case of the missing contact lens holder So their journey begins at Charles De Gaulle airport and already there is chaos! Traumatised from standing patiently in the check in queue whilst the biggest coach load of French push in front of us Saz realises she has checked in her contact lens holder and solution (ideal when you have a 9 hour trip ahead of you!) Discovering that the terminal building has little in it but some cool escalators, toilets and a newsagent they decide to improvise….2 boxes of tic tacs and a bottle of water later all was well in their world. • Dubai dodgem cars Sitting on the balcony of the latest and greatest air-conditioned oasis palace after their first exhausting day in Dubai, sleeping, saz and ficks sit outside on ... read more

Tonight is the last night of my training in Dubai.. I was recalled from my travels to be at Dubai for a week of training for my new job, and had been in Dubai since 5th May.. I initially thought that I could catch up with my travel journals when I was in Dubai.. but everyday, after a long day of training.. and going out for dinner and drinks with my new colleagues.. by the time i came back to the room, i was very tired already... so no updates till now.. there are still 2 journals that i wanted to enter: 1) trip to Nairobi National Park and 2) Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate National Park.. as i was writing the journal for Lamu. i realized that i've lost a bit of the feelings i ... read more

Well hello all, I am back in the land of desert and never ending heat!!! Have been busy at work since I came back from Oz, but did make time to enjoy the visit of one of our favourite sons, Dan the son. It was great to finally meet him and to see how similar he is to his brother. (For those of you who are scratching your heads, I am talking about Matt's brother Dan). I am pretty sure that he managed to have a great time here, although I was not lucky enough to play him, and beat him at pool!! That will have to wait until August. I am off to work again tomorrow, and this time off to the lovely Athens in Greece. Till my next installment....... ... read more

For those of you who have been wondering exactly what it is that I am working on over here I have a bit of a surprise for you. This morning I had a meeting out at the Dubailand main HQ and I took along my little old camera phone and managed to get some snaps of some of the models of what Dubailand is going to look like when it is finished as well as a snap of the model of my project - Aqua Dunya. And the biggest surprise that I had when we arrived is the LIVE tigers that they have in the reception area of the office. AND I AM NOT KIDDING. Check out the photos. Apparently these tigers are the cubs of a couple of tigers that are in Dubai Zoo. And ... read more

Suprise, Sorry we are late for our first entry, we were playing in traffic. Well our journey started last tuesday May 1st, with enough tears to fill drought ravaged (haha ravaged) dams. We flew out at 7:20pm and on our way through customs Matt was kindly asked to step aside to check his rather sexy body for explosives, those of you who placed bets on this should collect now. Luckily the all clear was given and our trip was allowed to proceed. A stop in Singapore airport for about 20 mins after our 7 hour flight was enough to find the best beer garden (so far) in the world with a humidty of around nine million and passing cops with heavily armed machine guns. (Matt was again slightly nervous) Once we got back onto our ... read more

Well life continues on nicely. We took a little drive on the weekend and went up to Sharjah and Ajman for a look around. It was pretty interesting in Sharjah. Some of it looks exactly like Dubai, nice and green and all pretty, and other parts are really really rough around the edges. However thinking about it those parts look a lot like some areas around the gold souk etc. Ajman was lovely. It has very pretty beaches and is nowhere as developed. One thing we did notice is that there is a complete absence of road signs in Sharjah pointing towards areas outside of sharjah. I guess if you go there you are meant to know where you are going. I have taken a few photos of the drive into work. There is construction going ... read more

After our teary goodbyes in England we arrived in Dubai in the early hours of the morning so it wasn't until around 3am that we got to our apartments. We stayed at the Golden sands 3 apartments for 219 pounds for 5 nights. We could not find a fault with the room. We were very hungry when we arrived so decided to splash out and get room service- we had 2 big steak sandwiches and chips for less than 8 quid. Not bad and it went down our belly's a treat as well. Our first full day in Dubai was pretty much wasted because we slept in till the afternoon. When we did get up we did boring stuff such as going to the supermarket and getting food in for our stay as we are ... read more

Thankfully a couple of weeks ago the time came to leave the joys of the Golden Sands No 5. This being the delightful place that TTI had put us up in whilst we looked for somewhere to stay. The fact that this was only a studio apartment, and that Jeremy was stuck in it almost 24/7 was enough to drive him nearly completly mad (the curtains in the corner of the room were looking a little frayed at the end of the stay, and if there had been carpet available I am sure that he would have been chewing that as well :) We have now found ourselves a delightful little apartment in a place called the Burj Residences which is situated just behind Burj Dubai. We have a view that overlooks the pool and we ... read more

It is 7:40pm on Friday, April 27th. Now that is what you call up to date. I am sitting in area 3 of Dubai international airport six hours early for a flight. We’ve already been here for almost two hours. Even with a guaranteed late checkout thanks to our Starwood Gold membership and a trip the Deira souqs, we find ourselves here too early. I guess we could have tried to do more, but we’ve done everything we wanted to do (or could afford) in Dubai, and it’s time to go. Jumeirah Open Beach: So salty, you can’t drown Our lofty plans to get to the beach before sunrise do not materialize and the rays creep into our dark room signaling our failure. It’s all good, the beaches do not open until 8am anyway. We sign ... read more
