DOGUBAZIT to KARS. 17 September, 2016 The time difference on crossing the Iran-Turkey border is 90 minutes backwards. Unfortunately it takes a few days to adjust. We were to meet at 7am for breakfast, however most participants were up and wandering around at 5.30 am ready to leave. Our usual departure time on the bike is between 6-7 am! We departed at 9 am, when the bus to transport us the 180 kms to Kars arrived. It was a good morning weather wise, coolish, but relatively clear sky. About 2 km from the hotel was our first army roadblock, concrete barriers, tank and personnel carrier and machine-gun toting soldiers. After a brief look in the bus we were on our way. No other holdups on route. We traveled along the Turkish- Armenian border for about 30 ... read more

KARS. REST DAY 1. 18 September, 2016. 4c at breakfast warming to a beautiful blue sky day. After breakfast drove east with 7 others to the town of Ani, on the Armenian border. An interesting few hours. Ani was first settled in 5000 BC. Its recent history has been turbulent. Its city walls were built in 961-977. It was an Armenian city and its gates open the Silk Road from the west. Its first Cathedral was built in 987 as Eastern Orthodox, the faith of the Armenians, however when the Moslem Seljucks raided in 1064, the captured Cathedral was turned into a Mosque, Fethiya (Victory) Mosque. However the Armenians were prolific builders and another church was constructed to honour St. Gregor, an important Orthodox Saint and priest. This church contains the first murals in Turkey. Built ... read more

Geo: 41.0138, 28.9497This wraps it up for us at the capitol of the Eastern Roman Empire. Off very early in the morning for Athens.A little about our impressions of Istanbul and the Turkish inhabitants. The setting is spectacularly beautiful. Blue water all around with often steep hills. Climate is also wonderful, low humidity and moderate temperatures. Highs were uniformly in the mid 70's.The inhabitants are profoundly diverse in appearance, at least the woman. The men generally are dressed alike, most with some degree of a beard, but otherwise dressing as folks would in the U.S. or Europe. By contrast the woman vary from full Burkas, who represent perhaps five per cent, to women wearing rather provocative attire. The Turks seem to accept this as a matter of course. We saw no signs of disapproval due to ... read more

Geo: 41.0138, 28.9497Did we forget yesterday to mention we arrived in our third continent? Well, the east side of the Bosphorus is in Asia. That is where you saw Bird partaking lunch. So, three down, one to go. Stay tuned for the exciting revelation of the last continent. Now for today. We seem to be fully acclimated to the new time zone. Very good. You may think since we visited five places, the day was very busy. Nope, started at 10:30 and back just after 4.We were jostled about in the spice market, which is perhaps what we think about a middle eastern market. Tons of people, mostly locals actually, and a great variety of shops hawking their wares. Interesting and colorful, but sorry no pictures (not really picture worthy). We did manage to purchase three ... read more

Geo: 41.0138, 28.9497Set sail this morning traversing essentially the entire length of the Bosphorus Strait (its not that long). Best day so far at Istanbul. Scenery was quite nice, Bird enjoyed the history and the weather continues to be wonderful. Averages here are in the mid-upper seventies, which is what has been occurring. It was, however, very breezy. We did arise much earlier than yesterday. Perhaps we have adjusted to the seven hour time zone discrepancy.... read more

Geo: 41.0138, 28.9497This was NOT a day for the bright and bushy tailed. Both of your authors alternated sleeping and waking (not a great night) until perhaps 4am then we were both sound asleep. HP woke up first (typical), and noting filtered light assumed it to be about 6:30, so he proceeded to the computer to confirm his impression. The computer disagreed indicating 11:20. HP concluded the computer was following another time zone and consulted his watch, which by that time suggested it was 11:21. Continuing in his disbelief, he conferred with Bird's watch, which offered him no support. Oh well, he took his shower, etc. and woke Bird in the "afternoon" (12:02).We finally made it outside and visited the above sights. Perhaps as we are not as aware of the history, we were not terribly ... read more

Geo: 41.0138, 28.9497Okay folks, we arrived at Constantinople (Instanbul, Turkey) at 5:20 pm local time after eleven hours flying (and to think it will take another hour on the return). Anyway, it is two continents down! Yes two, review our intro and you will see we said four continents between 30 August and 7 October. On 30 August we were on the continent of North America, now we are in Istanbul, which is Europe, so that's two. As a bit of an aside, we would like to tell everyone what they already know-we have three wonderful children. Baby Bird was just excellent and cooperative in keeping her sister Sally during our trip. And Doozer rivaled her with assisting in Sally's care. The easy willingness of these two was such a pleasure. Thank you kids; we love ... read more

Here we are...my last blog of the holidays...and actually, the 501st one...yes, I'm sorry to admit it...traveling is in my blood. This summer has been pretty exceptional...I've now been on the road from the 10th of June till the 17th of August...so many things to discover...suddenly my wishlist of place to visit has gone smoothly shorter! I know, I'm writing this nearly 3 months late. And sorry to admit, traveling is not over with the summer....so more to come. Even if currently, I'm only one blog late on my writing. I love to have amazing sites....and no other tourists to experience them with me. So we are just few weeks after the failed military coup....huge bomb has blown in Istanbul airport few weeks ago too. Let put it straight...most tourists are gone...and the few remaining are ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Pamukkale August 16th 2016

You all saw those postcard pictures....but can you only put the location on the map? I couldn't precisely few months ago too, but I cannot claim to have see the world without making it one day to Pamukkale. From Cappadocia, I could have fly back to Istanbul, than transfer to another flight to Denizli. Instead, I went on the backpacker way. I spent my night in two buses plus a minivan all the way from Urgup to Pamukkale. The bus ticket was 17usd. I had no idea what to expect. The buses were full. These buses are not really the one you find on long distances in South America. They were clean, service was decent....but a comfortable night it was not. These buses must be great for a 4-5 hours day ride...not that easy for a ... read more
