There is something to be said for holding a piece of pottery, over 2000 years old, in the middle of an archaeological dig in Israel. It is quite possible one of the coolest things I had ever done, working with kids I had just met two days ago, looking at pieces of our people's past. Each piece of pottery could have been someone's wine jug, cooking pot, mixing bowl. The stone chamber 15 feet below ground charred with ancient fire telling a story of a baker, a potter, a common person. A bunch of us discovered steps, and began to frantically clear away the dirt, even as everyone else began to bring the buckets up to the surface. In the process, we uncovered basically an entire charred cooking pot in pieces. It was unexpectedly exciting. As ... read more

Ok, so according to the stuff i've just filled out, I am in Jerusalem, Israel.....and that will be true in about 30 hours, give or take..... How weird is that? After a full day of almost panicked packing, at 11:10pm, I am almost winding down. It really hasn't hit me that I won't be coming home in a few weeks - actually I don't think that it will hit me for a while. I have this nagging feeling in the back of my head that I've forgotten something. And instead of finishing off the suitcase, I am in front of this computer, writing out a blog. (By the way, whodathunk that Rachel Silvert would ever honestly be able to say that she had a BLOG??) People have been asking whether I'm scared about "the situation" in ... read more

Bil'in The ISM report has been updated with more information and pictures from the Bil'in protest we participated in yesterday, so I'll post the link again. Fourteen injuries have been recorded from the violence of the army. http://www.palsolidarity.org/main/2006/08/11/bilin-4/ Leaving Tulkarem Elliot: Going back in time to before Bil'in, leaving Tulkarem was very sad for us. I think it is where we have the closest friends, and the place to which, when we say we will return to Palestine, we imagine. In many ways its a very ordinary corner of the West Bank, although the paraphernalia of the occupation makes everywhere seem more alien to us. But the examples of selflessness and human concern we saw there were really inspiring. I've extolled the virtues of the Society of Social Works before; the medical care and e... read more

Comfortable in Little chicken Elliot: So, back in Al Quds again. We have spent the last week at the thirteenth Youth Festival in the village of Farkha, which does indeed translate as "Little Chicken." It is a mountain-top village in the Salfit region of the West Bank just South of the peninsula of Israeli settlements known as the "Ariel finger," which gloved in the wall, jabs into Palestinian territory by 25km. Apologies to our legion fans for a week without updates- we had no chance to use the internet in Farkha, which houses only just over 1,500 people. Six hundred metres above sea-level, the surrounding slopes are covered in stepped olive groves for miles. In a month they will be harvested, eventually to produce 100 tons of olive oil. Somewhat ironically, just as we were spending ... read more

Hello from Jerusalem. Things are very normal here in Jerusalem, even though there is a war going on not far from here. We had a quiet last day of biking in France last Friday, about 40 mile round trip from Limoux to Mirapoix, a town with lots of old (very old) timbered building. Easy riding which we needed and the weather had cooled down some. Saturday was not a good day. We were dropped off at the airport in Talouse at about 9:30 in the am and didn't leave until 6 pm. Then spent hours in the airport in Frankfort, arriving in Tel Aviv at 3:30 am. LONGGGG day. Things are quiet and we are catching up on sleep, spending time with family. Were it not for the newspapers, we would never know that there are ... read more

hey folks, i'm finally getting a chance to write what i did in jerusalem. my cousin's computer is finally fixed. so thisi s a post dated entry. hehe. jerusalem is an amazing city with an ancient past that we can't really comprehend. the city is ancient ruins built on top of older ancient ruins, modern buildings built on top of that. it is a beautiful mountain area, the sunsets are beautiful and the night time air is perfect. there is a very special feeling to the city, with all the religions and past looming on the surface, and it is evident everywhere you go. it is hard to describe, but when you are here, you understand. so, since i spent 5 weeks in jerusalem last summer, i had done most of the touristy things already. but ... read more

i'm in jerusalem!! i got here on sunday night, and its now wednesday. it feels so good to be back in the city. i've been mostly hanging out with friends and wandering my favorite parts of the city. im in an internet cafe right now, so i do'nt really have time to write as much as i'd like, but i just wanted to give a little update. jerusalem is a beautiful and ancient city. its really amazing, and hard to describe, except that you should see it for yourself. someday. things in israel are still pretty tense, but jerusalem is pretty safe. i know you are all concerned about me and the american news certainly doesn't help you feel any better. while the situation is definately serious and dangerous in some places in the north, the ... read more

Hi. I lied. I will write a couple more of these. What can I say. People are fickle. So, an update from the calmest place on earth. I've been living in Jerusalem since the beginning of June, in a little apartment not far from the Bethlehem checkpoint (i.e. the Green Line, the border with the Palestinian West Bank), with a fun and eccentric Russian roommate who stocks our fridge with kvass. I am attending, so it seems, what is described as a pluralistic, egalitarian yeshiva - surprise! I was surprised - where I am one of the most, if not the most, devout skeptics in attendance. Apparently, combined with my lengthening hair and my not dressing like a schmuck, this has resulted in my developing a reputation, for good or bad, as something of a nihilistic ... read more

Our tour group had a fabulous night out on the town last night. We woke up early to make it to the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum and memorial. The grounds of Yad Vashem are beautifuly done and they recently opened up the new museum. The museum asalts all your senses as you are overloaded with pictures, artifacts, and exhibits about the Holocaust. The museum starts you off looking at the Jewish population before the Holocaust and progresses towards the end of the war. The museum is designed in a way that you have to go through the whole museum before you can leave. I connected with the museum when we came upon a room where the floor was once the street of the Warsaw Ghetto. For some in the group the museum was too much and ... read more
