It was another early start of the day so we could go for a hike in the desert. We traveled to the Ein Ovdat national park. Ein Ovdat is like a small grand canyon. It is a beautiful gorge in the middle of the desert. After hiking along the river flowing through the gorge we started our ascent to the top of the gorge. You follow a winding path of steep stone stairs cut into the gorge face and in some place you had to use ladders to get up to the top. It was a hard but wonderful climb with a spectacular view at the top where we met our bus. After our hike in Ein Ovdat we stopped in Beer She'va to pick up 8 Israeli soldiers to join us on the rest of ... read more

Travelling through Israel, it's hard to know how you feel from any one moment to the next. On one hand, you get to experience the beauty of the Jewish culture, finally able to fully flourish after centuries of oppression. On the other, you know that the country exists on the backs of the Palestinians, who've been shunted aside by the world community to assuage their guilt. After our night in Tel Aviv, we got up early the next day to walk down to Jaffa. Originally a seperate town populated mainly by Christians, it's mostly been swallowed up by Tel Aviv as the latter has expanded. However, it still features a beautful section of old town, with gardens and houses of worship. It also has a bridge where supposedly if you place your hand on the plague ... read more

Hello again. Since last speaking with you from Eilat (southernmost point in Israel), we began driving north through the Negev desert, stopping in Mitzpe Ramon, a city that sits on the edge of a steep cliff overlooking the Ramon crater, a deep bowl in the desert whose rocks contain fish fossils, since the crater was underneath the sea millions of years ago. Then we drove towards Beer Sheva and spent a few days living with a bedouin family who now live in a city with homes and streets. Almost every home has a tent outside where the men sit every evening, drink bedouin tea and coffee, and smoke tobacco in the nargila. The father is the principal of a school for blind bedouins, and the wife stays home and prepares food for the family, consisting of ... read more

i must first start this blog by stating that one of my wishes came through on my amazing trips to the holy land of israel. i tasted the sweet sweet taste of dr. pepper once again. i found a couple of places in jerusalem that imported it from the states and i had my fill. i would have brought some back here to istanbul but i spent every single dime i took out of the atm and i didn't want to take anymore out. but i am satisfied until i return stateside in a couple of weeks. so just because of the dr. pepper the trip to israel was a success. besides the dp, i will just begin by saying that israel is fucking amazing, even for an atheistic jackass like myself. the place is full ... read more

Walking the Stations of the Cross while hearing the Muslim call to prayer, stepping out of the Armenian quarter and into the Jewish quarter in a few quick steps, so much diversity into such a small area. Settling in and moving slow, travelling with six it would be theme that not all of us would make it to our chosen destination. Food seemed to be a reason for it, Israel has amazing food, it lead me off in strange directions constantly. Two pints of fresh strawberries for five shekels, (1.10us,) the supposed best soup you have ever tasted, felafel and sharwma sandwiches at every turn. Best of all, the real Israeli hummus is so good and creamy, what ever they have in the States, its not hummus. Fumbling our way to the Western Wall and visions ... read more

Early in the morning we were picked up from our hotel and started to head towards Jerusalem. The trip was quite short and we arrived soon at the City Centre of Jerusalem. After the arrival we started the city trip by visiting the tomb of King David which is located on Mount Zion. King David's Tomb is a site viewed as the burial place of David, King of Israel, according to a tradition beginning in the 12th century. The tomb is situated in a ground floor corner of the remains of the former Hagia Zion, a Byzantine church. Older Byzantine tradition dating to the 4th century identified the location as the Cenacle of Jesus and the original meeting place of the Christian faith. . From there we arrived in a synagogue, which has been changed to ... read more

When we decided to travel down through the Middle East to Egypt we had no intention of visiting Israel or Palestine. This was partly because we wished to travel on to other Islamic countries who would not grant us entry visas if we had been to Occupied Palestine (as they refer to it), and partly because of our own, particularly my own, political views and prejudices in favour of the Palestinian cause, their right to their own state and the end of the Israeli occupation. I had spent several years boycotting Israeli produce for instance, as my own way of not giving any support to what I viewed as the illegal activities of the Israeli state, and was happy to rant to anyone about how unjust the situation was and how I never intended to visit ... read more

So, after my adventures wandering around the OC alone (the Old City, that is... Inside the Wall, if you didn't know) I went back to my Hotel and all... Then the next day I checked out of my hotel and was going to catch a cab to JUC. HOWEVER, I talked to the guy at the Front desk, Joseph, who told me that the cabs only come to Jaffa Gate. Well, in case you weren't aware, my hotel was 'right' inside the New Gate. That's the NW corner of the Old City. Well Jaffa gate is approximately halfway between the New Gate and JUC. Now, being the logical person that I am, I thought this through. 1. I drag my two huge suitcases to the Jaffa Gate and get a cab to take me the rest ... read more

I arrived in Israel late on the 25th of January. I then crashed for the night, only to be awoken by a little Muslim boy kicking a car parked outside of my window, making the alarm go off. Hehe... I went into the Old City and wandered around for a bit. Well, for about three hours. I saw the Tomb of David, the Church of dormition, and a few other random sites that I bumped into. I spent about a half an hour taking with some old man, but I had convinced him that I spoke no English. Heh heh heh. He knew jsut a tiny bit less Russian than I know, but it was effective. I could string together enough intellegent sentances (or almost intellegent sentances) to get by. Hehe... It was great fun! Then ... read more
