Given my friends' thorough mental preparation about Israel, I was not surprised with the tight security and fully clad soldiers. I have to say that I was taken back by the relaxation and safety I felt in Tel Aviv. Maybe its all because of the warm Mediterranean breeze. With the never ending beaches and sun, it truly is a sun city. Another fact that my friends didn't tell me is that Tel Aviv is also the sin city of the middle east, just like Vegas...maybe its because of the neighborhood I stayed at. Moments after I walked into Old Jerusalem, the aforementioned safety was peeled away a thin layer. I am staying at a hostel right outside the Damascus gate, in the Arab district. I got lost for a moment after entering the Old City ... read more

Shalom! We have spent the last 3 days in Jerusalem. Upon arrival, we drove in and did nothing the first day. The following day, we booked a tour of the Old City and saw the Armenian, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian quarters. We also spent 1.5h at Yad Vashem (not enough time). I had seen most of these sites before but it was a new experience for Josh, but it's always nice to see things again. The next day we went to the Israel Museum - of which the archaeological wing was closed... until 2009... for "comprehensive renovations". We saw the Dead Sea Scrolls though, which was amazing in itself. Later that day we took a scenic drive to a stalagtite/stalagmite cave near Beit Shemesh... which was closed for the day. Notice the theme. Also, I forgot ... read more

10.15 The plan of waking up early for a whole day of excursion had failed! Guy woke us up after a long sought after sleep, with a knock on the door asking us if we were awake, a humble host's way of saying 'Get your lazy asses up!' So, we got up to a late start, where we were first introduced to Guy's lovely girlfriend Morit, that was coming with us for the day in Jerusalem. After a quick shower and breakfast we were on our way. From Tel Aviv it is only 40 min to Jerusalem by car, so it went pretty quick. The first impression of Jerusalem, driving through the suburbs, was the special look of the buildings. They are all made of stone, new or old, they all have the same outside ... read more

Hi Everyone, After a long wait...I have finally managed to put a small sampling of the pictures I have taken up on the web. (With more than 1000 pictures taken, I only put up around 150) Hopefully I have managed to include pictures of everyone I have met along the way and mentioned in my blog. If you are not in a picture and we met in India, my deep apologies. There is a full week of pictures missing when I was with Gail (Taj, etc.) due to a virus on my card. When I get this rectified, I will send out more. http://www.flickr.com/photos/marnian2/ In the meantime, I hope you enjoy! Much love, Marni... read more

Last I left you was in Udaipur, land of the glistening lakes. The day I left I spent shopping in the local marketplace and met some wonderful wholesalers who would have sold me their whole store, had I agreed. Wandering the streets, I couldn't help but be wistful and wish, only slightly, that my time in India was not coming to a close. There are things I will miss...the shopkeepers, the ornate windowsills that decorate the random buildings along the back alleys, the temples that adorn quiet streets, the colorful saris that whisper femininity in the breeze. As I boarded the plane alongside some Australian foreigners, we could not help but compare notes on our most interesting moments in India. We shared pictures of the places we had not seen...and I, once again, mourned the fact ... read more

Our last two days were action packed, as I am sure Hadassah wanted us to leave with a full heart and spirit...we traveled Sunday to K'fat Adomin which was an amazing community in the West Bank....a Jewish community that came thirty years ago to a place in the desert where there was nothing and creating a beautiful garden community where Jews of all denominations live harmoniously and their children get a truly pluralistic education. Then we traveled East then south through the West Bank to the Dead Sea. The Jordanian River is drying up and no longer runs to the Dead Sea so the sea is receading and the hotels no longer had beaches so now they built canals to bring water from the northern part of the sea down to the southern part. We went ... read more

Tonight will be Shabbat so we are all excited to have a day of rest! We got up early and went to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum which has been redone since I was here in the 90's----they gained huge ammounts of records, artifacts and knowledge when the Soviet Union broke up because the Societ Union had under lock and key most of the documents and artifacts that they had seized from the Natzis. The new museum is built in a triangle shape like a long knife slicing through the mountain as a reminder of the slice through history....it is a long and winding path through the museum and it rips your heart out, then you come out at the end and it's a huge open triangle looking over Jerusalem reminding us that we endured... I may ... read more

Today we woke up and had a lively pannel discussion/debate with members of the Kinneset which was really great. It was wonderful to hear the different sides and easy to see how hard it is to be in government in such a trouble filled region! We then went first to Mount Scopus to the old Hadassah Hospital where we saw some amazing physical therapy innovations they are doing, I tried to meet with the head of the social work department but she was busy and left me her card. We then went to the old city and shopping in the cardo and shook...then lunch on our own before visiting the Kotel, or Western Wall. (I forgot to mention it was snowing this whole day, big wet freezing rain and snow....NOT normal for Jerusalem and pretty miserable ... read more
