Jerusalem Jerusalem. I saw two sides this weekend. The Arab and the Jew. The East and the West. Salat al Jumaa and Shabbat. I arrived to Jerusalem Thursday evening. I stepped out of the bus to the cool Jerusalem streets. The air was chilly, fresh from the rain. My first sniff of winter. Baraa's cousin picked up me, Shayna, Baraa, Ehab, Sam and I in his cab. He drove us down into the heart of East Jerusalem, where we climbed the old stone steps up into Baraa's house. We were greeted with warm welcomes from Baraa's sisters, nephews, nieces, father and mother. We feasted on rice, chicken, and all sorts of delicious concoctions (alas, the names escape me). And ofcourse, tea. Sweet, sweet tea. In the evening us girls sat and talked to Baraa's sisters. Baraa's ... read more

“What’d he say?” I asked the young Jewish boy to my right. “They are going to shoot it,” he replied in his classroom English. Brushing the traditional curls out of his face, he reemphasized, “The robot will shoot the bomb.” Standing on an elevated portion of a building, Raf, Dan, and I lean against the wall, taking in the scene below us. The Israeli police have established a 50 meter perimeter around a bicycle chained to a street sign. An innocuous looking backpack hung on the rear of the bicycle. Every move cautious and calculated, a bomb disposal robot inches closer to the backpack while a somber policeman focuses on a television display, his hands resting on an array of joysticks on the side of the bomb disposal truck. A crackle of Hebrew on a megaphone, ... read more

Since Kevin has already done a pretty good job of wrapping up Jerusalem, I’ll talk a little bit about my ‘Hubble-Bubble’ experience. After dinner on Thursday we made our way back to the King of Hubble-Bubble’s shop (he pronounces it Hubbly-Bubbly) to try hookah. The King himself wasn’t there but two of his sons (the Princes I suppose) were there and they set up a hookah for Kevin and me. It was pretty funny to watch a 13 year old and a 15 year old set up and take the first few puffs off of the hookah. They spoke very good English and we talked back and forth for a few hours, teaching them Spanish and learning a little Arabic. I also showed them how to ‘french-inhale’ (look it up… but think Frenchie from Grease) and ... read more

So I'd like to apologize to the 5 of you who are subscribing to this blog for the barrage of emails..but we just got internet again and as all addicts are apt to do, we're getting as much as possible in as short a time as possible... Thailand wrapped up amazingly...Because of the King's birthday, there were about 5 days of partying all throughout the Kingdom. When I turn 80, you better believe I'm going to party for 5 days...anyway..in celebration, the people of Bangkok decorated the city with massive plywood arches decorated with gold fabric and decorations made out of blank CD's. I assume they decorate the arches with fake CD's in honor of the fact that the backbone of the Thai economy is bootleg programs and DVDs... Also because of the birthday party there ... read more

Hello Everyone! Since writing last I left Aqaba in Jordan and went to Petra which was amazing. It was too much to take in for just one day so I decided to stay four days instead. The old city (dating back to 3rd Century BC) had huge tombs and monastries in great condition and I also enjoyed walking up mountains and through the valleys. I met lovely local Bedouin people who live in the caves carved in the mountains. For example on my first day I met Ali, who gave me free bread and sardines for lunch which was great as I had just been eating stale bread on the previous days as the food is expensive unlike in Egypt. I then went with him to feed his goats and had tea with his family in ... read more

I didn't much care for the hostel at Jerusalem. It was damp with just an exhaust fan. I felt like i was in a hole! I was up by 7am and checked out by 9am. A quick stop at the information center at Jaffa gate and we were on our way to see the old city. I had barely taken my first snap when it started to rain. And then it poured! My tourist map was pulp in my fist as i shrugged my shoulders trying to fight the cold. by 10am it stopped raining and the sun was out again. We were close to the jewish quarters now. I pulled out my map of the Via Dolorosa and we were now on our way down the 14 stations of the cross. We spent the entire ... read more

If we were to use the GPS route to get to the Dead Sea we'd have reached long past sunset. So how did we get there? :) By road of course. No alien intervention We arrived just before sundown. The strip was quite empty. I guess most of the tourists had long gone. The stretch was totally ours! It was a major thrill to float on the Dead sea. It's just remarkable how such a place could exist in nature! I lay on my back with my hands beneath my head as i floated and watched the sunset in the distance. Wish i had taken my camera in the water to capture it. But then again after my canoeing escapade where i drowned my new Canon 7.1 mpx camera I decided I'd be a bit ... read more

It is simply impossible to imagine a more religiously enigmatic city than Jerusalem. Amongst the old city of about 1 sq klm, the Big 3 religions have some of their most significant temples of worship all competing for a piece of the prime reverential real estate cake. I found it mindboggling to have the Wailing Wall butting up against the Al Aqsa Mosque. Watching orthodox Jews going through their paces against the Wall in the shadows of the Temple Mount on one side and the previously mentioned mosque on the other is prime front seat viewing. These orthodox Jews can be the subject of some cynicism on the part of the more secular section of Israel's populace, having the pseudonym of "penguins" bestowed upon them. Apparently the penguins are the only Israeli citizens exempt from the ... read more

We are not the sole occupants of our apartment. We share the space with some local tenants. One of the less appealing was a 12 cm (5 inch) centipede we found crawling on the stairs shortly after we arrived. After Betsy snapped a couple of mugshots, I caught it in a yogurt container and released it outside. More charming are the geckos. They are up to 10 cm (4 inches) long and have special hairs on their feet that permit them to adhere firmly to surfaces, so you’re just as likely to find them on the walls as on the ceiling. I’m told that these geckos have break-away tails. This is a defense mechanism. If a predator grabs the tail, it will snap off and start wiggling, distracting the predator while the business end of the ... read more

When travelling, plans can change suddenly and drastically. After leaving Dahab, we headed up to the popular resort of Sharm El Sheikh to meet up with my parents for a week of snorkelling and lazing around the beach and pool. The day before we were due to meet them at the airport, I checked e mail to find that my dad had been taken into hospital with a kidney infection and subsequent blood poisoning, so they had to cancel their trip (hope you are feeling better, dad!). As we had already done the major highlight of the area, snorkelling and diving on the magnificent reefs of Ras Mohammad National Park, we decided to move on. This decision was helped by the fact that our accomodation was very basic, mosquito-ridden, and overpriced, and the only transport out ... read more
