(K) So what do you know, my bike, again was going no-where. I needed a new tube but Camp Kalia at Israel's Dead Sea did not sell them funnily enough. So I had no choice but to hitch-hike to Jerusalem- with my bike. Eventually three Israeli girls in their 4WD stopped, I threw the bike on the back and was the way to Jerusalem / Al-Quds / Yerushaláyim- whatever you want to call it. They dropped me off on the motorway JUST OUTSIDE the city. Nice of them but how annoying! It was hot, busy and no-one was piking me and Ralph up, not even John Key in his ute. In the end a taxi stopped. The driver said, I see you've got problems with your bike; well I've got problems with my turbo, so we've ... read more

The Friedlands Pictures of the Friedlands are below. I am so blessed to still be connected to this family. I have known them since I was a girl of 12. I used to babysit them, and here they are... all grown up! It is so much fun to have friends from so long ago and to see how we all mature and grow. Building life-long friendships is priceless. Some pictures are of Stephen (the second oldest) winning his award for Valor in the Lebanese War. The Burden of Israel "The burden of Israel is divided between those who fight, and those who pray." This is a quote from an Israeli that I met recently. When creating Israel, the government decided that the citizens had two choices: they could go to a Yeshiva and spend their ... read more

Our wonderful time in Israel is coming to a close. Our last day in Jerusalem was spent in the “new city of Jerusalem” where we were able to “give back” to Israel and the people not as fortunate as us by volunteering in a soup kitchen. We peeled many large bags of potatoes and served up many ladles of couscous. After our Mitzvah time Josh went with a small group from our tour and spent some time at a tank museum. The rest of us spent doing some last minute shopping in the Arab market, meandering the winding streets of the Old City’s Jewish Quarter, and packing up for our few days of rest by the Mediterranean Sea in Tel-Aviv. We all ended our day with a good-bye dinner and many hugs and memories to last ... read more

We had another very fun day today, although Deb and Willie were on a tour of their own (Nazareth, Tiberius, and more around The Galilee). We started by planting a tree in the desert, an Israeli tradition. It was hard to believe that the small pine saplings would grow in such a harsh environment (although they did have a drip system installed), but we were told the huge forest across the street started the same way 20 years ago. We then headed to Beit Gurvin, an active archeological site. The area has 5000 caves from around 1st century BCE. We went into a couple excavated caves and saw an ancient olive oil press. The highlight was when we dug in a cave ourselves! We all found small fragments of animal bones and pottery shards (some as ... read more

Today was a big day for the three 12-13 year-old boys on our tour - they participated in a Bar Mitzvah at the Western Wall. Josh is not quite old enough so he did not read from the Torah, but he did read a Hebrew prayer and a couple English passages beautifully (Josh informed us that “I’m still irresponsible for another 9 months” after the Rabbi said that a Bar Mitzvah marks the transition of a boy becoming a responsible man). The service was very nice, but somewhat chaotic when mixed with the sounds of other Bar Mitzvahs, nearby drums, and tourists as they walk through the area of our service. The Rabbi did an excellent job making the short service meaningful. Before the service we squeezed in a tour of the tunnels under the Western ... read more

Today was the most somber day of the tour. We spent much of the day visiting Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust museum, a powerful, moving, and painful experience. The rise of the Nazis through the end of WWII was described very well in photographs, text, film footage, artifacts, 3-D models, many interviews with survivors, and replicated scenery that we walked through. The most moving part of the museum was the Children’s Memorial. Next we spent some time viewing several beautiful Chigall stain glass in the Hadassah Memorial Hospital. The best part of the day was when Willie, Deb’s boyfriend arrived safe and sound in the late afternoon. It’s great that he is able to join us. ... read more

Saturday, August 18 This city knows how to do Shabbat - it’s amazing how the streets which are normally bustling become so quiet on the Sabbath. In the Shabbat spirit, we also took it easy in the morning. It was nice to have some time to recharge. In the afternoon we took an optional walking tour of the Christian quarter of the old city, which was quite fascinating. We followed the path of Jesus’ last day up to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus was crucified. Although it is not part of our heritage, the tour was very interesting and we learned a lot. Once the sun set, the city sprung to life. After dinner we roamed the many shops on Ben-Yehuda Street along with the throngs of young Israelis cruising the streets. ... read more

Today we made our pilgrimage to Jerusalem where we stopped first in Banias Springs, an oasis in the Golan. We enjoyed a 90 minute hike through a Garden of Eden of fresh fruit trees (figs, grapes, pomegranate, berries, etc…). Our destination was the largest waterfall in Israel (which isn’t saying much, but it still was beautiful). We then started driving our motorized camel (i.e., tour bus) south across the desert. It was incredible to see the landscape change dramatically into a barren dessert, with sand dunes as far as we could see. The only evidence of life was the occasion camel grazing on the sparse shrubs. Much of road ran just a few yards away from the Israel/Jordan border. By the way, if you ever happen to be on Rt 90 in the Sea of Galelee, ... read more

Was it dangerous? Were there any bombings? How was the hummus? No it wasnt, yes but not in Israel, and really damn good. These are a few of the most asked questions about my trip to Israel, and its no wonder, everyone I have come across has been particularly interested in hearing about my travels there. It seems to be the great unknown, always in the news but you never really know what its like until you get there. I was in Israel for about a week and have had some of my most memorable experiences so far, but then again I say that about every new country I visit. I spent a few days in the great hospitality of Max, a friend of my brothers that I had only met once before by chance and ... read more

I apologize for not keeping everyone updated about the wedding weekend, but there was shabbos and wedding hoorahs and other biznass with which to deal. So it turns out that the night before the wedding i was poisoned at a restaurant and spent the entire night blowing chunks and shitting water. I say i was poisoned because my friend rachel and i sat at the same table and Rachel was kinda giving the waitstaff a hard time because they were doing a shitty job. Anyway, the thing is all 14 of us ate at the restaurant, and rachel and i were the only ones to get food poisoning----neat. So i spent the day of the wedding curled in a ball in a dark room, trying to drink water and not throw it up, and somehow ... read more
