David here. Rabbi Hachen will be back tomorrow. Today was another incredible day with sunshine all day long. We were on the run from the very start. We heard speakers about the success and struggles of Reform Judaism and I was very proud as Rachel received a mounted certificate acknowledging the Butterflies she collected from our Religious school. There is a program here where they are trying to collect 1.5 million drawn paper butterflies, decorated by children to remember that same amount of children who perished in the Holocaust. While this is not a pleasant subject it is gratifying to see my daughter begin to learn the importance of not forgetting this horrible time. From there we went to the old city and before going to the Jewish quarter we saw the place that is recognized ... read more

Shabbat has ended, very full day. It began at Ben Gurion airport in Lod (near Tel Aviv). I arrived first, and then waited for the two other families from Temple Beth El. They flew from Newark; me -- from JFK. Won't bore you with flight details, suffice it to say that I made it along with 4 duffels of stuffed bears and children's clothes which are donations for children in Israel. The bears were collected by Amanda B., the clothes by temple members (thanks Nursery School!) And in spite of some last minute fooling around by Continental Airlines, the whole Paster family made it on the plane! As I waited for the Beth El folks to arrive (I was an hour earlier), Chanukah began -- last night. Some airport workers pulled out a chanukiah (menorah) and ... read more

Well it's that time of year when one pigs out and gets merrily pissed. I'd like to wish a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year to all my family, friends, workmates, fellow travellers and bloggers. It kind of felt appropriate that I spent the lead-up to the holiday season in the Holy Land. I loved walking around the different quarters (Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Armenian) in the Old City of Jerusalem. Most of the religious activity centres around the Temple Mount area where the Western Wall and Dome of the Rock are located. Also took a trip into Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. It was eerily quiet with nary a tourist in sight. Normally there would be heaps at this time of year. Possibly people have been scared away by the huge security fence ... read more

Hey everyone! Wow it's been a while since I actually wrote anything - sorry!! Things around here have been really really hectic! Let me try and catch you all up... About a month ago, the trip took a trip to Poland to study about the Holocaust. Throughout the week we visited the Cracow and Warsaw Ghettos, cemetaries and synagogues in Cracow, Warsaw and Lublin, sites from Jewish life before the Holocaust, and went to the Auschwitz-Birkenau and Maedonick Camps. The week was really hard for all of us, and we all reacted to the things we saw in different ways. As our teacher kept telling us, there really is no way to understand all that happened - to be able to say why or how these events came to pass. He didn't understand and he didn't ... read more

Hello All! Here's another blog as promised. Right now I'm in Jerusalem for shabbat, staying with a couple friends from my program. We've had a very very quiet and relaxing shabbat, seeing as there isn't much to do around here once shabbat starts (stores close down and all). We made ourselves a nice little dinner, and have just been relaxing the whole time. Its also the holiday of Simchat Torah today, which is basically a big party of celebrating receiving the Torah from G-d back in the day. Anywho, so when I left off, we had just finished with Yom Kippur and I had returned to Ulpan. Our last few days of Ulpan were a lot of fun. Classes were good, and we had some fun music lessons in there. In the afternoon/evenings, we hung out ... read more

Jerusalem is a very spiritual place, where religions from all around the world meet and share a common interest in the holy land. you sense a wierd tension in the air, and some people even fall into what they call "Jerusalem Syndrome", where they get overwelmed by the spritualness of the place and find their whole life adopts a new direction inline with their calling from God. I loved it. not only are there people from all over the world and a lot of history and culture and things happening... but it's a beautiful city built entirely out of Limestone blocks(its law) so even the new buildings look like they'd fit into any scene from a biblical movie. everyone seems to be in a good mood too, which is always nice. I couple of weeks for ... read more

As the craziness of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur die down, and the craziness of Sukkot is upon me, I find some 15 minutes to write. High Holidays in Israel really were something. For Yom Kippur we went to Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. As we all settled into our rooms for the holiday and started to get ready, you could feel the excitement. Yom Kippur is not generally a happy holiday, what with the not-eating and all. But when with a group of people your age, from all different backgrounds, sharing something like a Day of Atonement, a fast, people can really connect. Everyone got into their white holiday clothing, swapping customs, double-checking the rules of the holiday. Being away from my family for the Holiday made me think more about my own customs. It ... read more

OK, yes I'm aware this blog is a little late, but I was busy actually doing travelling, as opposed to sitting in front of a computer, so hence the delay. Sorry to all the people who thought I died since my travelblogs just ended abruptly. Anyway, regarding Israel. My first stop in Israel was Eilat, subsequent to crossing the land border from Jordan, which in itself was quite an interesting experience. Exiting Jordan was routine, afterwards I was required to walk down across the no-mans land through a narrow corridor with barbed wire fence on either side of me and completely exposed to Israeli sniper fire should they have chosen to fire on me. I then went through an exhaustive search of my bags, in which they were run through the x-ray machine at least four ... read more

Well, this past sunday, I finally started my program. We started in Jerusalem, so I took the bus there sunday evening. We stayed in Jerusalem for 4 days in a really nice hostel. The first week was just gtting to know each other, orientation about the program, tours around Jerusalem, and then one day in Tel Aviv about Jewish identity. So far, the program has been going really well. Its a very small group, only 12 participants, and it is a very international group. There are 5 americans, including me, 3 french girls, 3 russians, and 1 british guy. To say there is a language barrier would be an understatement. The french and the russians know very little english, and of course all our tours and discussions have been in english, so its been a real ... read more
