Purim is a jewish feast which is celebrated in March. This year it fell on march 4th. It celebrates the victory and existence of the Jewish people despite the evil plottings of Haman, in the book of Esther in the Bible. It is tradition for the people to dress up and then they read the story of Esther. You boo for whenever the name Haman is read and cheer for Esther. We did this on saturday the 4th, and everyone dressed up. I have some pictures attached of some of the costumes people had. The real fun however was in Jerusalem. Purim is the one night that the Jewish people are not only allowed to be drunk, but actually commanded to be drunk. They are commanded to be so drunk that they cannot tell the difference ... read more

Today after church, which is the longest hour and half of my life, we went into the old city to hang out until 4pm when the bus came and picked us back up. We got Flaffel at the best place in the Christian quarter. I dont know what kind of special stuff they lace their flaffel with, but they are so stinkin good. After that we went to trade some more money with Shaaban and had tea with him. It was really good tea, with mint in it and everything. I dont know where they make the tea but these guys walk around the street with these carrying trays for tea and deliever it to different shops throughout the old city. so Shaaban sent out for tea and we waited around his shop and then sat ... read more

I am going to be so happy when i can put another location other than Jerusalem. I love the city and there is still so much to see, but i am ready to see the rest of the country as well. But for now, i am still blogging about Jerusalem because this is where we went on wednesday as class. This time however, it was for a New Testament walk through the city. We left on tuesday night and stayed in the city again. But in a different hotel this time...not the gloria. sad. It was called the Knight Palace or something like that. I really enjoy the over night trips because we are able to get away from the Moshav and stay somewhere else. What i dont like is the rain. it poured on and ... read more

i was so tired last night so i didnt feel like writing the rest of what we did during the day on our trip over the weekend. so i am going to combine weekend trip and yesterday trip to bring everything up to speed. So we woke up really early on sunday morning because our professor needed help getting breakfast for the whole group from sellers in the old city. we were out of the hotel by 7:00am. one problem. NO ONE IS OUT AT 7AM. and no one is selling. we walked from Jaffa gate, through the christian quarter, around the jewish quarter, back to the muslim quarter and probably through the armenian quarter too. we seriously went everywhere looking for food. and our professor, todd, who i will now always refer to as todd, ... read more

This weekend was a hard and busy one for me. I am actually glad that it is the week and normal classes are back in session. The normal routine of classes during the week gives me a break from the long and tiring trips which we take over the weekend and on wednesdays when no classes are in session. This weekend we went to Jerusalem again and stayed the night in the old city at the gloria hotel, right inside Jaffa Gate, in the christian quarter; which if you know anything about the old city, doesnt mean the inhabitants are christians...they are mostly all muslim, actually. anyway, we left for the old city after church, which is on saturdays mornings in the new city of Jerusalem. The service was in hebrew, then translated into english ... read more

today me corie and audra decided that we would go into the old city just the three of us to look around and kill some time. none of us had class until late this afternoon, which was nice because is was one of the first free days that i have had since i have been here and probably one of the last..ever. A bus picks you up at the Moshav and supposedly takes you into 'jerusalem'. we got on the bus fine and the bus driver was really nice. it cost about 8.5 shekels to take the bus into jerusalem-which isnt very expensive. i met a very nice women on the bus from the next town over. she had lived there for 34 years but is orginially from south africa. i liked her accent. The bus ... read more

Yesterday was the first official day of classes and our first feild trip into the old city of Jerusalem. We had class at 8am from 10am and then got on the bus to travel to the old city, which is only about a 30-35 minute drive from the Moshav. The first thing which is visible from the bus were the city walls, which kind of reminded me of the Great Wall of China in some weird sense. The old city is where the Dome of the Rock is located, The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Mount of Olives , and the wailing wall and many other sites as well. Non-Muslims are not allowed inside the Dome of the Rock, and today we didnt even walk near it on our walk through Jerusalem. We first stopped ... read more

Si I've been here in Jerusalem over a week now... It's so wonderful here! I actually just got home from The Wall to participate in the welcoming of the Shabbat and it was so beautiful! Last week wasn't very eventful because the weather was bad but this week was absolutely PACKED! I added my little folded up prayer to the hundreds stuffed in every tiny crack and prayed and pondered and it was wonderful. I even got to do a little singing and dancing with the young girls there! So fun. I've done so much sight-seeing in this week and I haven't even scratched the surface of this city! The merchants all love me for my blonde hair and it's really fun cuz I get free stuff all over the place because they love my hair ... read more

Tonite I laughed so hard, I got a crik in my back. I also started coughing, but as I have bronchitis, that doesn't neccessarily mean much. Tonite we remembered all the fun times we've had this semester. We remembered our crazy teachers, our hard-core tiyullim, our inside-jokes. We shared our talents. Tonite I cried. Not much. A little watery eyes. A solitary tear or two making its way down my cheek. We remembered how much we will miss eachother. We remembered that in a few hours, we would no longer be living together, learning together, growing together......being together. This trip has affected me in ways that I can't truly explain. It's more of a feeling. The knowledge that I've changed.....that I'm different. I'm a better person. I'm a happier person. I'm a more knowledgable person, though ... read more
