Christmas 2012 was to be my first Christmas away from my family in New Zealand. I always I imagined that I would end up spending it in a hostel in one of Europes major cities; I would meet a group of random travelling orphans like myself and we would spend the day eating precooked supermarket ham, drinking a mulled wine or four and sharing stories. However, of course things don’t always go as planned and on December 22 I found myself sitting on a coach to Tenby, Pembrokeshire; a fishing town on the West Coast of Wales. Why, you might wonder, would I go to this small town that no one has ever heard of? Well, in an interesting but wonderful turn of events, my sister moved to this village just a few weeks earlier. I ... read more

The night was stormy and we awoke with some apprehension about what the day would bring. It is Mary's birthday and we wanted to go for a walk along the cliffs. Breakfast was excellent, although there was no-one else eating throughout our meal. The hotel seems very quiet... Having agreed to meet up at 10:30, we we pleasantly surprised to be on the move by 11:00. The cliff walk to Tenby has stunning views. It also has stunning hills, some of which were eased by steps on the footpath. They were still steep, so we stopped frequently to admire the view and to catch our breath. Eventually we caught sight of Tenby from the coastguard communications hut, the sunlight playing on its pastel-coloured higgledy-piggledy houses. Whilst this was a welcome sight, we could tell that there ... read more

I don’t think you could find two countries so different yet so similar. Britain is as far away from New Zealand as you can get before you start going back again, but sometimes they feel like the same place, superimposed on one another as if we’ve fallen through an Alice-in Wonderland wormhole in the time/space continuum. Or maybe it’s because my first 12 years were spent in England and I sometimes get a momentary lapse of reality, saying “back in England” when we are in England and what I really mean is “back in NZ”… I didn’t return to the UK for 30 years, but each time we’re here it’s like coming home – even to places I’ve never been. There’s always the thought in the back of my mind…where would it be better to live? ... read more

Very stormy during the night & woke to more wind & rain lashing outside. We got up lazily decided to just potter around the north coast near where we were. First stop was Blueberry Angora (which we've visited before with Claire - lady there remembered us too!). Bought myself a lacy scarf & some yarn as a present for Clare. Also got interviewed for local radio as they happened to be there talking to them & asked or a customers point of view! err.. ok! We had a bit of a driving tour along a headland and lunch was had sitting in the car pulled over in a passing place overlooking a beautiful stormy bay. We then headed into St Dogmaels where we pottered around the cathedral and mini-museum and went to the Y Fellin watermill. Had ... read more

Woke up to grey cloud & rain so we set of for the wet weather plan of Pemberton’s Chocolate Farm! Nom! Sadly when we got there only the shop was open as the rest was closed for refurbishment (dammit!) but Mark rallied magnificently & bought plenty of chcolate to make up for it. So we then headed over to Llys-y-Frân reservoir for a disappointingly soggy stroll round. The Dam was an impressive sight but the walk became rather monotonous up & down through patchy woodland with limited views, especially when the heavens opened & we got drenched! Annoyingly when we got back the cafe was shut so we headed back towards the cottage for tea & cake. On route as the sun returned so we stopped to poke around Pentre Ifan burial chamber which was very ... read more

Wednesday was nice & sunny again so we jumped in the car & headed down to St Davids & got tickets to Ramsey Island. We found the lifeboat station were the boats go from & after a bit of kerfuffle we found where we were meant to wait for our boat & waited. Boat turned up & we headed across the Ramsey Sound. The Island is lovely. We saw wheatears, mippets, oystercatchers, little auks, lots of gulls, seals, peregrin chicks, chough (in flight), jackdaws, beetles, big fluffy caterpillars and a herd of red deer. We did the Ramsey 3 peaks challenge (ok, non of the hills were that high, but they were quite steep!) & even got a tad of sunburn. Beautiful day for it! Had a good chat to many of the RSPB vols there, ... read more

Tuesday dawned rather grey so we opted for damp weather Plan A. First we popped over to Castell Henllys. We said hello to the first residents we saw then pottered around the iron age huts & chatted to Roger about how they would have lived there. We then went over to Cilgerran Castle where the sun came out as we wandered up & down the old walls and towers. The view along the gorge from the castle was so fantastic so we decided to try the gorge walk. It was a lovely stroll along through the woods & then back along the river. Annoyingly there had been a land slide washing away the path so instead of walking all the back the way we'd come we decided to off-road it up through the rood. This proved ... read more

The first day of our honeymoon we had a lazy start then went for an explore in the wildflower meadows around the cottage. We then took advantage of the good weather & went pony treking up the hills near Dinas Cross. The ponies were lovely & there were some lovely views! After that we went for a stroll on th coastal path around Dinas Island. Again we settled in with the open fire & dvds for an evening snuggling.... read more

Yeah, so, I love Wales. It’s official. I took the train to Pembrokeshire for the entire reason I chose Wales in the first place – hello hours spent walking along the coastline! You did not disappoint. Train to Pembroke was easy enough. It was crazy foggy for the first half of the ride... I was worried it would stick around, but thankfully things started to clear up the closer we got. I had a good laugh at one point because I thought we were passing through a swamp - I was then surprised to see a bunch of cows seemingly standing where they should be sinking... cow swamp? I decided it was so. Once in Pembroke, I caught the “Coastal Cruiser” - the bus driver was really nice and funny. After I bought my ticket, we ... read more

Because we haven't had a holiday this year and our big one isn't coming up til the Autumn, back in July we spent 3 nights in a friends' caravan in the beautiful reort of Tenby, Pembrokeshire in South Wales. The weather prospects were rather dire so we took warm clothes, books, DVD's and no sunscreen. We would regret that last omission! The caravan is actually 5 miles from Tenby in the tiny village of Manorbiere. It's quiet, pretty and a lovely spot for oldies like us or families with young children. We drove straight there - almost all the way on the M4. To our delight the sun came out as we arrived in Tenby and from thereon it was warm (even hot!) apart from as we drove towards the caravan park and I commented on ... read more
