August bank holiday weekend: what better time to participate in the favourite English past-time of camping? Early the Saturday morning, Doug, Fe and the two of us set off for Pembrokeshire, a new part of Wales for us all .... after a hilarious drive (one of those ones where your abs actually feel like they've had a workout) we neared the Pembrokeshire coastline and started our search for a campsite. With a lot of camping sites having minimum one week stays over this busy weekend, we'd decided to "wing it" and find somewhere when we got there! Easier said than done... as we trooped from campsite to campsite only to be told that the campsites were full.... or were lead up people's random driveways by a misbehaving sat nav. Eventually we found a campsite! And what's ... read more

We spent some long northern hemisphere summer days exploring the cool little (and I mean LITTLE) city of St. Davids and some of the beaches: Caerfai and Newgale in particular deserve a mention. We were succesful in finding good coffee in both St. Davids and Newgale, so life was good. The ice cream was pretty awesome too! The mussel we found on the beach left a little to be desired though, not really what we're used too! We were particularly delighted to find a cafe that stated in a very 'British' way that "ITEMS CANNOT BE SWAPPED" on its breakfast menu (see photographic evidence). Apparently this is a immovable universal truth. (There's nothing like being flexible to the needs of your customers). Needless to say, we didn't eat there...I could not have coped with the earth-shattering ... read more

One of the highlights of our recent whistlestop trip back to the UK was Carew Castle and Tidal Mill in Pembrokeshire. The weather was great and we had a nice walk around the tidal estuary and we had excellent bara brith and bad coffee at the little cafe overlooking the castle. Before exploring, we had a proper british pub lunch in a proper british pub...another highlight of the trip! Just wanted to post a few pictures really...... read more

A: One in the front, one in the back. (Drew here, sorry for the delay) I had to wait a good twenty minutes before I could talk to a bank manager. All I needed to do was change my billing address, but everything’s a bit more involved here. The manager interviewing me noticed my current billing address. ‘So, you live in London then?’ ‘Not really, I was just staying there for a week’ ‘Ok’ … ‘lived there your whole life?’ she was concentrating so hard on the screen that she could only manage to slur this question out the side of her mouth. ‘No… I’ve never lived in London. I was born here in Hythe but moved to New Zealand when I was five. I’ve never been back before, so it’s quite nice visiting old family ... read more

The Volvo estate was the perfect car to tow with. Built like a tank. It started to lose the will to live in Newport (probably not that uncommon) and after limping into a car park refused to move another inch. The gearbox was shot. After calling the breakdown company we had to take the Volvo on the back of a truck and pick up the caravan from the camp site. We then faced a very long trip back to Cambridgeshire. All went well until one caravan tyre blew and shredded itself. No problem, we had a spare. But we couldn’t get the damaged wheel off. The recovery driver had no tools with him and everything we had was too lightweight for the job. Cue another call to the breakdown company. They arranged for a recovery company ... read more

We went back to four wheels today and drove down the coast to Fishguard. The sea was a bright turquoise and looked more like the Med than anything you normally get in the UK. A local did say it didn’t often look this good. If you had shown me a photo of the sea and asked me to identify the location, I would have been more likely to have guessed Cyprus than Fishguard.... read more

Tuesday 24.11.2009 Day 41 St David’s We went to St David’s the west most point in Wales. On the way we stopped in the town of Penbroke and explored there saw castle. We then saw the Carew castle and Tidal Mill which was closed due to strong winds. The Tidal mill is the only restored one in Wales and there are only 5 in Britain. The Castel displays the development from Norman fortification to Elizabethan country house. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of a much earlier settlement possibly dating back some 2,000 years. Most of the fairies to Ireland were also not going due to the wind. We could not see Ireland (which I am told you can on a clear day) and the sea was very rough and windy. The town was very pretty as ... read more

I confess ... by the third weekend in a row going out and doing stuff, you're excited, but perhaps that excitement is slightly tempered by how damn tired you are! Come Friday of the long weekend I wasn't as buzzed as I'd been the previous 2 weekends as all I wanted to do was sleep the entire weekend away, but instead I was jumping in a mini-bus for a trip to Pembroke in Wales for a weekend of walking, horseriding and quadbiking. Wouldn't have not gone for the world, but 2 weeks down the track ... I'm still tired. Long weekend Friday, expecting chaos on the roads and a nice slow trip, but didn't expect minimal traffic (we left more than an hour late) or the slowness of the trip to be down to the driver ... read more
