Noone can ever, ever accuse the Scottish of not being passionate about their sport! Wandering down to the local pub, Heather took me to a raging party of Scots barracking for the Celtic football club to beat the Hearts. Soccer has never been my favourite sport, but when you are surrounded by a bunch of blokes that are THAT excited to see their club play, you can't help but get into the game. Using some language that would make Billy Connelly blush, these guys cheered and hurled abuse at the tv screen as if their team could really hear them 100 miles away in Edinburgh. Unfortunately Celtic went down in that game, but next time I am in Scotland, I will definately organise to see a soccer match live just to feel the passion of the ... read more

An early morning climb of Arthur's Seat, the large hill and best lookout in Edinburgh meant lots of happy snaps of the amazing city that is Edinbugh. The climb took about 15 minutes, and although my fitness isn't the same as when I left Australia, the stunning view made the trek more than worthwhile. 5 years ago, I studied for a semester at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in the USA. One of the many great friends I made while there, Heather, lives across the other side of Scotland in Glasgow. An hours train ride, and we spent the next umpteen hours discussing the parties, people and fun of studying at UNC. Glaswegians know how to party, so after a few Scottish beers with Heather, her roommates and friends, we headed out to some local ... read more

I arrived in Glasgow on Sunday 30th July. This was my first trip to Scotland. I had umpired a match the day before in Manchester - Manchester Mosquitoes v Nottingham Scorpions. This was the last match of the regular season for both teams. Manchester won the match convincingly and just failed to make the finals. I got up early on Sunday and caught the train from Manchester to Glasgow. I love train travel, it's very relaxing and you have much more leg room than on the dreaded bus. Andy Butler has been involved in trying to grow the sport in Scotland for a number of years. He picked me up from the train station and drove me to the ground, Victoria Park. I was very impressed as they have managed to secure a fantastic oval field ... read more

Okay so it is pretty apparent that I am writing this blog much later than the actual events so hopefully I can still do the trip justice and make it sound interesting or at the very least not boring. So we flew to Scotland on July 27 - another lovely Ryan Air flight where I spend most of the flight hoping that the plane does not fall apart (Ryan Air is a low budget airline which I am sure has wonderful safety standards but since I pay twenty bucks for the flight I tend to be a bit nervous). We arrived on time but did not get our luggage for an hour - it is official I have bad airplane luck. Kyle’s dad’s cousin George and his wife Phyllis were at the airport to pick us ... read more

Tonight we're in Glasgow. We hopped a plane from London to Edinburgh yesterday and then took a Megabus to Glasgow. Megabus costs one pound regardless of how far you're going. Pretty good deal. I was expecting the bus to be a bit whiffy at such a price. I was pleasantly surprised however at the air conditioned luxury we travelled in. I was also wondering whether I would see a lot of Scots on the bus, it was cheap afterall and the Scots are somewhat known for being ... thrifty. However the bus was only half full. A shortish walk brought us to our hostel for the night. Again, I was kind of worried. According to the brochure we got the other day (after we had booked it, otherwise we may not have bothered) the hostel sleeps ... read more

Last night my friend Sarah's window was broken at about 11:30 pm by a group of kids...or so we think. I was in the kitchen with Tamsin eating toast when Sarah came in looking like she was going to cry. Evidently she'd gotten up to work on a piece of writing when a loud blast hit her window. There are like five or six little holes that look like they came from an air pistol. Anyhow, we had to call security; Allastair, our security guard is the coolest guy ever. He's round around the middle with a slight comb over and the bright yellow slicker outfit that is so popular for security here. He ran out immediately and got the head resident. Supposedly, the police are coming to the dorm today to investigate. Poor Sarah has ... read more

I have kidnapped my friend Chelli's computer and am working on trying to add photos. There are all on facebook under my profile, so now I have to figure out how to get them on here. Anyhow, Im sicker than a dog, so I have been wallowing in my own filth all day. I think its either the flu or food poisoining, only time will tell. Tommorrow the group is going to go see Bard in the Botanics. Basically, its this Shakespeare troupe that performs in the Glasgow Botanical Gardens. I've very excited. I've finished several books today, including an interesting biography of the Marquis de Sade. He was a sad, deranged, twisted little man to say the least. okay, lets see if that link works. I have five albums on face book, so we'll figure ... read more

THe place from Dublin to Glasgow was cancelled on Monday night, leaving me and 19 others in our group stranded at the airport. There is still no explanation for Air Linguis why the plane could not take off, but instead we were sent off to a hotel down the street. The great Southern was an awesome hotel...however, the Air Line sent us there in error, because there were not double beds for 10 rooms, or twenty people. Don't worry my puritan friends, guys and girls were still in separate rooms, as to University of California standards. Instead, we all walked an extra five minutes (cutting across a motorway, sorry mom) to get to the Clarion Dublin. THere, we were allowed to sleep. THe next day, most of us didn't eat breakfast at the hotel because we ... read more
