Howdy All! I am still in the preparation phase of my trip. I am trying to get my plane tickets & travel info squared away, along with room assignments, and of course resolve money issues. I've applied for several scholarships, but won't know if I have gotten them until later in the summer/early fall. I'm not very good at the photo thing, but will try to pick up a digital camera and post some photos of my trip along with keeping a regular journal. Charmone... read more

I'm so glad to be back to civilization. I've yet to fall down the stairs here. Everything feels better, especially the food. I am no longer at the mercy of a two mile hike to the store...though I did that yesterday. Confused and lost in a new dormitory, I walked all the way to a market downtown. Little did I realize that less than a block away from our dorms was a market that had everything I needed. The wonders of living and learning. I really hate the dorms I'm in, because I feel like Sara from the Crow. I feel like in Cairncross house you have to lock everything at all times and sneak around so that you don't run into anyone. I guess a bed is a bed, but its a much rougher neighborhood ... read more

I think I want to live here. Not only are the people great, the University of Glasgow is so gorgeous it makes me loathe the neo bs they call architecture at UCI. Anyhow, its beautiful here. As all the locals are saying, the weather is finally great. It is bright and sunny with minimal cloud cover. I'm excited for rain too. At the moment all the students are working on their new computer account and planning our day. We have classes in about an hour, so will head out to lunch time. Last night we went to a pub with our directors. It was once a church, or so the rumor goes, and is now a beer garden. The cider I had was fantastic, and I seem to have started a trend drinking it. It works ... read more

I plan on getting back on the road July 1st. I tentatively plan to head north…way north…to Canada and then I am going across and south to California. It should take me about a month and a half. I just got back from a quick trip to Scotland and then Marco Island, FL. I was gone a total of one week. I went to Glasgow with a friend and we couchsurfed at a local's flat. The weather was beautiful. I would love to go back when I have more time and do some hiking on the West Highland Way. We only had 3 days so we stayed in Glasgow for 2 days and on the third day we took a train to Edinburgh. As soon as I got back from my 9 hour flight back, I ... read more

Before anyone asks...yes, you will be bombarded with Glaswegian expressions until such time as I leave Glasgow or they stop making me giggle quietly to myself. On the brighter side, my stay in Glasgow will also mean more frequent entries as I have a lot of time and free access to internet. So if you don’t like it and then you can go “away ‘n’ throw shite at the moon”! This morning saw me once more braving the front of the top of the bus as I headed out to the University of Glasgow. Being prepared for the bumps that awaited me this time, I was able to stay in my seat all the way to my destination. The University, opened in 1451, is a masterpiece in gothic architecture. That is, the main building is a ... read more

And so the blogging begins.... I arrived in lovely Glasgow on Monday after a rather uneventful flight. I was planning on embellishing the mundane adventures of my journey but they mostly involved me setting off metal detectors and walking into the men’s toilets and now that I have managed to get over the jet lag and do some exploring, it seems unnecessary. For those of you who MUST hear the embellished version however, I did write it down so you may see it when I return home. As mentioned earlier, Monday and Tuesday were spent getting over jet lag and picking up some essentials (a mobile phone and shoes). Today I ventured out of Glaswegian suburbia and wandered through some of the city’s historical sites. Those of you who recall my love of gothic architecture and ... read more

hey guys, so it was a long trip but i made it... after determining that i had been travelling pretty much without sleep for 30 hours it made me consider why i had booked through american airlines... oh well it worked out fine and the best part was that arriving 30 hours after your leave your own country pretty much wears off any trace of jet lag. when andrea picked me up from central station it was pretty exciting and there were lots of hugs. we walked back to her dorms which are gorgeous (atleast for dorms) and after a quick shower and some food we hit up the uni bar called the Union- it was the last day of exams so it was crazy busy. its sort of like the den EXCEPT they have 7 ... read more

The laddie sitting beside me on the plane says, "I saw Braveheart last week, is that what Scotland is like?". I muttered "of course!!" to myself, after all can't you see all the wee men running around in their criss crossed patterned skirts. He asked his question as we were descending down over Scotland heading into Glasgow airport. My home. It certainly felt like home when we landed into the grey, dreich weather that Scotland is so well known for. In fact, the little Scottish lady sitting on my other side and I looked at each other as the plane touched down and said, "Awwhhhh, the old place hasn't changed a bit!!!". It disnae matter though, I was hame. The sun even starting to glint through the morning clouds as we waited for my Grandpa to ... read more
