This week has been so exhausting! I finally get over being sick and then I'm sick again after about 4 days of feeling alright. I still blame it on the weather and the fact that since I live so close to people and I'm not outside as much as I would be at UConn that It's making me get sick more. Hopefully this is just a little cold and not a full out plague like last time. Last weekend I had my first visitors! It was great to see people from home (my aunt and uncle from CT) and show them Edinburgh and Scotland. We got to see some great stuff which I wouldn't have seen normally either. We saw Britannia (the Queen's yacht, it was pretty fancy but straight out of 1970), Rosslyn Chapel (yes ... read more

We packed our bags and boarded a plane - destination, GLASGOW. It was exciting to be finally on the way home. We flew from Vancouver to London Heathrow and from there up to Glasgow. Of course, it wouldn't be Heathrow without the 45 minutes standing in line to get through security from one terminal to another. Or being bundled along with the hordes as the huge mass of people throng from one part of the airport to the other. Joyful!!! We eventually made it though and landed on Scottish soil. After speaking with my Aunt Lesley we discovered that my brother Alan and friend Kat were just about to arrive and soon I saw them on the escalator. Whoopeeee, we jumped in a taxi and made our way to my Gran's house. There we had hugs ... read more

I went to my first ceilidh last night. It was held on a permanently docked ferry on the River Clyde (in walking distance from where I live). The dancing was high energy and manic. It just so happened that we have P.E. training classes at the university and last Wednesday was the class on how to teach dance! I was swung, pushed and pulled around by my more knowledgeable Scottish peers. Learning intention: to learn the basic steps for Scottish country dancing. Actual learning outcome: be drunk enough to be sufficiently pliable for the physical trauma. With my new found knowledge in mind, my Scottish counterpart and I decided to relive our high school years by getting really drunk really fast and really cheaply. Jeanette drank so much she spent the rest of the night drinking ... read more

Got back home yesterday! I'm having withdrawals from my maps, my backpack, train tickets, crumpled clothes and strange beds! Last day in Dresden (Friday) I said goodbye to everyone during the day, then at night Vilma and I met paid a surprise visit to Florian. Hung out for a bit, went out for a bit to a heavy metal bar/club place with Thomas, it was really good! Stayed at Vilma's the night, and rushed out the next morning, so I didn't really get to speak much to her family, but they were really nice from what I did manage to spend with them! Got to the ticket office 5 mins before the train left, got a ticket and jumped right on the train to Berlin. Got to Berlin then got another train to Shonefeld, literally sprinted ... read more

I’ve pretty much settled back into life at the flat. I can actually call Glasgow home now. Life just doesn’t seem the same without screaming freshers, howling wind storms, torturous grocery shopping trips, and the Glaswegian accent. But the most important thing that makes this place home is my urban family, Jeanette and Ryan. I have to dedicate this entry to these guys. I came home a day before Jeanette and listened for the door all the next day for her. I managed to hear that familiar front door handle open and rushed out of my room to ambush her before she even got the chance to open her own door. On Friday Ryan cooked a “Canadian” meal for us consisting of beans in maple syrup, chicken and fries with Swiss Chalet gravy. Combined with the ... read more

Hi All it's strange writing this blog entry from Glasgow - i really hadn't expected to see everyone from home until my trip finishes in May. However i wanted to see everyone and be with my family after the death of my Gran. So it's unfortunate circumstances but i've loved catching up with everyone. Seeing Lisa was great cos she is 6 months pregnant and i never expected to see her with a huge bump! Yvonne has had a beautiful baby boy - Max, and it was great to meet him for the first time. he's only 11 weeks old and such a cutie. I've spoken to Lainey a fair bit since i've been away but it was great to see her in the flesh and give her a big cuddle. catching up with Gillian was ... read more

Had a brilliant tour of Glasgow today. Amazing how much there is to see in Glasgow. it was a hop off hop on bus and it stopped at Glasgow cathedral, gorgeous this brilliant St Mungo's museum, the best museum I have been to in ages it was the museum of religious life with all these brilliant exhibitions on different religions and cultures life stages like death, birth and marriage and coming of age. It had brilliant stain glass windows and amazing artifacts. Also saw great things like the people's palace, the barras markets, the city chambers and trades Hall. There were lots of brilliant Victorian buildings I had a crick in my neck looking up at them. After the tour I went and got my shopping fix, gloves, hat, shoes and skirt. brilliant! Hey all, Ok so my flight to Berlin is at 9am, it's 4am just now and I am still in the midst of packing and trying to sort out the mini travel guides I made myself, as well as combing my hair, finding flight details and tidying my room. If only I could be bothered uploading a picture of this tip! Aaahhhhh I am tired but happy :) Flying with Easyjet to Berlin Schonefeld, then staying in a hostel in Mitte. Next stop, Berlin. Here we go... Over and Out. Zain xxx... read more

It feels like a lifetime since I’ve been able to do this blog again. Unfortunately, school has sort of sucked me dry of any creativity and wit. I’ve never felt so drained in my life. Doing this course is like being in some alternate world similar to the book “1984”. I’ve been broken in room 101 and now they are slowly building me up to be one of them. Well, maybe they haven’t broken me yet. I’ll just have to pretend like I’m playing some sort of game to get through the next 6 months. For any people out there thinking of doing teacher training at Jordanhill, just know that you will be dealing with the devil and his minions. Now that I’ve gotten that unpleasant bit out of the way, I’m finally on my winter ... read more

So here I am.. broke, alone, permanently disfigured ala Russia, and totally stoked! After just over 1/3 of a year I'm finally standing on Scottish tarmac - not for long mindue, I've a return ticket to Poland at the end of next week. One of the things I did manage to do during the timewarp that was Prague was polish my CV and find some Scottish engineering firms who might like to look at it. While London is intriguing, I've found big cities aren't really my thing. And the offer of chilly Scottish highlands and haggis hunting with a goosebumpy kilted Wallace was far more tempting. A Glasweigan guy e-mailed back, and after an hour long phone interview asked me to pay him a visit. So here I am, "on loan" from Eastern Europe... .. and ... read more
