We headed into Oban to book our £75 island rover tickets, which would pretty much let us and our bikes on any Caledonian MacBrayne ferry for the next 15 days. The woman there told us that there was a problem with the Castlebay, Barra ferry (it was broken) and that they would book us on it anyway and send us a text to let us know if it was cancelled or not. So we headed to the cafe in Tesco where we overdosed on carbohydrates and both fell asleep in the car. Never got the text but got confirmation that the ferry would set sail for Castlebay at 5.30pm, about two and a half hours late. As it was a five hour sailing this would mean we would arrive in Castlebay at 10.30pm rather than 8pm ... read more

It’s Friday, May 11 and we have our hire car. First stop at the 8 step lock series lifting boats from sea level to the Calladonian Canal eventually linking with Loch Ness. We’ve reached Portree on the western side of the Isle of Skye and the vistas along the way were breathtaking. We liked the rugged scenes in Ireland when we went there, but this part of the world looks wonderful. The plan is to tour Skye for the next few days then return to Fort William for an overnight stop before we bus to Glasgow and pick up another hire can. Somebody please be kind enough to be honest and tell us if these blogs are too much and/or too often. ... read more

Day 6: Thurs, May 3rd This post has lots of pictures because we saw so much amazing scenery!! After breakfast we checked out and hit the road again. We drove ‘The Road to the Isles’ to Mallaig. This is supposed to be one of the most scenic drives in the world. It was really pretty, going along the ocean at some parts. At Malliag we took the 11am ferry over to The Isle of Skye….As soon as we got to Skye I was taken with it. The landscape is so unchanged and dramatic. We drove the road on the sleat peninsula through Broadford on to Portree, the only real town on Skye. I got a kick out of seeing welcome signs for a town, that only has about 2 homes in it. We got to Portree ... read more

Day 5: Wed, May 2nd Today we checked out of Edinburgh. We picked up out Rental Car from hertz, which was a short walk from the Hotel. But, we couldn’t find our way out of the city. We just drove around in circles for an hour. It always seems like rental cars just can’t leave their city without a goodbye tour…Anyways, finally found our way out, via the A720 and stopped at a Little Chef for breakfast (ewww). Then we noticed a sign that said 3 miles to Rosalyn Chapel, so we decided to go. I didn’t know we would be so close to it, and it wasn’t on our to-do list. But I’m really glad we went. It’s such an interesting chapel. It’s unlike any chapel/abbey I’ve ever seen. That’s probably why there is so ... read more

I have finally started to do some hiking and only wish I had done some more in the other places that I have been to. It is just so good to get away from everything and be the only one on top of a mountain in the snow, walking along the edge off a cliff or in a massive valley with mountains on either side. The first one I did was on the island Isle of Skye on the west coast of Scotland up a mountain called the Old Man of Storr. I had just hitched from the north and arrived in a town Portree on the island and couldn't be really bothered doing anything but the owner of the hostel told me to go and climb it this afternoon since for the first time ... read more

The journey to Inverness from Glasgow is one that I enjoy. The slow-moving A9 can be frustrating to the locals who battle tourists on a daily basis, but as a tourist the drive from city to lowlands, right up to the Highlands, seeing the scenery chang, always makes me smile and appreciate how lucky I am to live in Scotland, so close to all this beauty. Also, the further North you go the stranger the place names become (personal favourites include Auchtermuchty, and the River Garry which makes me snigger like a schoolboy and make bum jokes), and the number of "brown signs" increases dramatically. One day, we plan to do a trip taking in every brown sign we see, regardless of what it is for. This will include the mysterious "Time Capsule" which we keep ... read more

No Loch Ness Monsters up here in Scotland! I spent a couple of hours searching around the 70 mile lake that it is supposed to be in as well! The Loch Ness lake is obviously way bigger that I first though it would be and took a good 3 hours on bicycle to go and see only a tiny part of it then it started to pour so I turned around and headed home. So I'm up in North Scotland now but leaving tomorrow because the weather is supposed to be bad for a few days so heading to the West Coast then to Fort William to hike up the highest mountain in Britain which isn’t to big anyway but oh well. I Flew into Edinburgh on Wednesday after leaving several things behind at the airport, ... read more

Before I begin, this is also a notification to everybody that I have now posted pictures on the last three journal entries for the Great Ocean Road in Australia, Fiji, including some passable underwater ones of Talitha diving and some reef life, and our adventures in California.... But now to now... Before we left there was a discusssion 'thread' on this website about 'Returning to reality' after travelling, and people had various comments about their experiences, well as usual ours is probably a little unique... We landed in Heathrow to be met by Anne's brother. We naturally had a few wines that evening to help celebrate/commiserate, also noting that it was Annes birthday the next day, when we flew (joined by Alistair and family) to Inverness. (This was our 14th flight....)Our friend Jo kindly picked ... read more

YAY PHOTOS NOW! Well hidy ho diddly diddlers from sunny Scotland. Yep Sunny. I think we must have brought it with us from Oz. Well its been a big week since my last update, apart from the fact that half the time we have needed to use matchsticks to keep our eyes open after getting up for work at 5:30am every morning and not getting til after 7:15pm we also have had some extra curricular activity. Friday night was supposed to be another HUGE night out at a local bowlie. Turned out to be a bit of a fizzer, not many people, but our band mate Nige played for us anyways and we made the best of a funny situation. Now, if I hadn’t physically seen Loch Ness myself the last time I was here… ... read more

Well Easter's arrived, I've survived a Scottish winter. Despite being repeatedly told it was a very very mild winter, I felt sufficiently cold enough to require wearing an entire wardrobe of clothes a day. With the weather warming, forecast looking promising Anna, Fergus and myself decided to head to highlands for an Easter camping break. Upon making this decision there was a rapid purchase of tent, camping stove, sleeping bag and inflatable mattress…..kneel and pray to the ebay Gods! We set of on Saturday after a brief stay in Stirling, heading toward an increasingly dark cloud, which apparently was exclusively extended over Arisaig, west coast of Scotland, on the Road to the Isles. Set up our sparkling blue tent, glad that despite being a 4 person tent, there was only two of us a dog. We ... read more
