After a great week on the farm, Ben and I went our separate ways; Ben to another farm in Fort William, and I heading further north to bounce around to a few different corners of the Scottish Highlands. I actually stayed in Fort William the first night too, in a nice hostel overlooking the town. Fort William, the "outdoors capital" of Scotland, is a small town but it felt pretty busy after living on a remote farm for a week. The next day, I boarded another bus to the little fishing village of Ullapool on the Northwest coast. Ullapool is a beautiful town on a sea loch surrounded by mountains where I saw some of the best sunrises and sunsets of my life. The first night I met two Irish guys who were there for a ... read more

Both kids have started on a programme of jags (jabs - jags is a Scottish vernacular) We have given them the bare minimum for living in the UK but have decided to play catch up a bit mainly due to visiting Indis, I feel a bit guilty because I am not bothering with any, but feel i cant do that with my kids... Ronan wanted to take his sword into the nurse, thankfully not to attack her, but to chop off the sharp bit that hurt him. when Anne took him for his first jag, and was trying to explain it all through the tears, it went something like this Anne But you need your jags so we can go round the world Ronan Why do we need to go round the world quite.......... read more

Still practicing, but might as well share some local adventures. Kayaking is a big thing with us, and the Isle of Skye has some of the best kayaking in the world. This year was amazing for Basking Sharks, and the normal whale sightings off Rubha Hunis... read more

Rachel's not much of a beer drinker, so I've had to really pick up the slack. For as many amazing things that we've seen with our eyes, it would be a pity to leave the rest of our senses out of the journey. So this is the up to date record of the tastes that at least one of us has enjoyed. See if you can figure out which one of us that is... Geo: 57.4594, -4.02469From the small town of Pitlochry, we headed up towards Inverness. On the way, we stopped at Blair castle, which was a fairly impressive, manor-type, castle. Being so early, we managed to avoid paying a cent to wander the grounds. Our luck continued at the nearby Scottish Whiskey Distillery, where we managed to get in early, have a quick look around and get free samples.Eventually we drove through the town of Inverness, and arrived at the battle site of Colloden. This was the site of one of the most famous, and significant battles in Brittish history, and in fact the last major battle fought on Brittish soil, back in 17th of April, 1746. The battle was fought between the Scottish Highlanders, under Bonny Prince Charlie, and the English Government led by the Duke of ... read more

Geo: 57.2453, -5.02335Now came the long drive down the north side of Loch ness! It took a while, but was a really nice drive, stopping at a few lookouts along the way, by Castle Urquhart (a ruined castle on the banks of the Loch), and of course, by the offical "Loch ness Monster Visitors Centre." I quite enjoyed the weird and somewhat unwholesome enthusiasm towards ensuring the whole loch ness monster myth stayed alive and well. All the stupid hype, cant help but have you gawking around looking for the damn thing. The closest thing to a ride on Nessie came in somewhat lame circumstances at the visitor centre. But ah well, that satisfied my cravings. Eventually, we came to the bottom area of the Loch, at Fort Augustus where we had a wander around and ... read more

An update from the Isle of Skye... The Isle of Skye is decieving--its actually a massive island 60 miles long in the Northwest of Scotland. Yesterday Adam and I hiked through marshland to see the old Nordic castle ruin of Castle Moil. Apparently, a beautiful, busty blone Nordic princess strung a chain across the body of water that flowed by the castle so that the ships couldnt pass by without paying a hefty fee. If she was pleased with the payment, she would pay the sailors back by baring her chest. Our tour guide suggested we visit the castle and "get into the spirit" by doing the same. I told the guide not to hold their breath. Scotland has a lot of memorable stories like that. We have continued the tour of Scotland with a group ... read more

Well chaps we finally made it the land of haggis, bagpipes and the most colourful accent (well thats what we think) . And it didn't dissapoint, with mountainous, barren scenery and lush valleys that we'd always imagined. It all started when Stacey scored a rearrangement with her work schedule, giving us a long weekend that we could take advantage of - and it was definately needed for such a trip; It took about 6 hours to drive from Manchester to Fort William near Ben Nevis, then about 2-3 hours further to Inverness. We didn't do it all in one go, but decided to walk up Ben Nevis on the friday after a late night drive on thursday, and continue on to Loch Ness and Inverness on Saturday. On our late night drive on thursday, we ran ... read more
