After our first night at Roy Bridge we headed out the next day to Fort William to enquire about ferry timetables for an excursion to the Isles the next day and to see what we could do that day. Whilst there we got some pies and sausage rolls from the bakery and headed to Old Inverlochy castle to eat our early lunch. They were very bad, I pity the British having to eat bad pastries when everyone else in the world seems to have figured out how to make them properly. Sitting by the river eating our bad pastries, the sun was beautifully warm, the air was crisp, clear and sparkling and the mountains were capped with pure white snow. It was deceiving to look at the mountains in this setting, mountains that take experienced ... read more

This blog by Jacqui: Landed in London directly from Delhi. Spent a few days visiting Jane, Carter, Sam and Connor in Princes Risborough and a few days in the Chapel with Karen and Gabe (Somerset). Then we headed north to see Granny Georgie. A gorgeous week in the Scotish Highlands with Granny Georgie, Helen and Grant! Some rain, scrabble, hikes and tea and scones in Dornoch.... read more

Today was a lot of fun, minus the terrible weather we had on our tour up to Loch Ness. The tour itself, was rather drawn out, with several stops along the way. While we were on the bus it was rainy, and it only stopped when we got off. And of course when we got off, it was very windy and cold. The first stop was at the small village of Callendar, where we visited a rest stop / tourist shop. The highlight of stop was the Highland cow named Hamish. We then proceeded for a short stop in Fort William for lunch, where I had fish and chips. Out next stop was at Urquhart Castle, on the banks of Loch Ness itself. We toured the castle for about a 1/2 hour before heading on ... read more

The weather was a little calmer this morning and the puddle had mysteriously disappeared. We packed up after breakfast and headed back down to Uig. We left the bikes outside the ferry terminal and walked for about 20-30 minutes to the Post Office for the cash machine and back (the woman in the shop told us it would be a 10 minute walk and we're fast walkers! ) We caught the ferry back to Lochmaddy, back on North Uist and planned to catch the bus back down to Lochboisdale on South Uist where we would catch the ferry back to Oban and be reunited with our car in readiness for the long drive back to Tunbridge Wells. However, we discovered that the bus we wanted did not run on school days. We spoke to another bus ... read more

Andy and I decided we should have a proper full day off the bikes, none of this just nipping out for a quick 10 mile ride malarkey so we caught the bus from Stornoway back to Tarbert, Harris, from where we would catch the ferry to Uig on the west coast of Skye. We actually nearly reached Uig in November 2004 after driving up from Portree. We stopped a couple of miles south and looked across the bay and Andy thought it looked really boring so we turned back! In Tarbert we went back to the same tearoom place as we had visited a few days ago where we consumed another stodgy pasta bake thing while we waited for the ferry. The ferry trip took 1 and a half hours. Was very seasick as the weather ... read more

Cycle stats: 2 hours 22 minutes cycling 20.1 miles traveled 8.6mph average speed 27.6mph top speed. There was no 12.05 ferry from Berneray to Leverburgh in Harris due to the low tide so we had to wait for the 14.40 instead. We headed to a local tea shop for some toasted sandwiches while we waited. The sailing to Leverburgh took one hour and as we cycled out of Leverburgh we were straight into the mountainous areas and straight into headwind. What we lacked in miles compared to yesterday we made up for in ascending and winds! We passed Scarista beach, apparently voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world but we could barely see it due to the misty grey, drizzle. We arrived at Luskentyre beach, also apparently voted one of the world's most ... read more

This was a mammoth ride so cycle stats first 5 hours, 3 minutes of cycling 55.1 miles traveled 10.9 mph average speed 29.5 mph max It was absolutely pouring down again when we woke up so we decided to laze in the tent until 11am when we ate baked beans and canned tomatoes for breakfast in the tent. We did however set off by 12pm stopping off at the co-op again for a massive 5 litre bottle of water (that went in one of my panniers -- hmm! ) as the bladder carrier we had had started to leak. Fortunately for us we had mostly tailwind helping us along the mostly flattish but slightly undulating road north. However the weather was pretty damp. Just before we got to the causeway that would take us to the ... read more

Woke up this morning feeling quite rough with mild cold symptoms, mainly a sore throat. I suddenly felt very hot and it was refreshing to open up the tent. We decided to head down to Barra airport's cafe for some breakfast, toasted sandwich. Wished I'd ordered the Scotch pancakes Andy had as they looked amazing. After breakfast and packing up, we realised that we had missed the ferry we wanted from Aird Mhor to Eriskay so we hung about watching the planes land on the beach. We then headed to the jetty at Aird Mhor, just down the road and chilled ut in the cafe with some lentil & veg soup, tea and cake chatting to the bloke who ran the cafe. There we met another cycle tourer who had travelled south down the islands. We ... read more

Woke up feeling refreshed to perfect blue skies and sunshine. Crawled out of the tent to see where we had actually ended up. Pretty awesome. We'd ended up next to a little cove surrounded by rolling lush green and clear sparkling blue ocean! After eating just a bit of dried fruit for breakfast (instant energy), we packed up the tents and decided to cycle south back towards Castlebay, where the ferry had dropped us off the previous night. There we got some string to try and fix my pannier rack (which managed to snap on the very first night ). We then cycled further south to the island of Vatersay, now connected to Barra by a short causeway. It was here that I encountered the first climb, 12.5%. being brand new to my new shoes and ... read more

Sunday, May 13 and we’re sitting in a very nice little B&B overlooking the harbour at Uig (pronounced (oo-ig) Ferries depart from here for some of the outer islands. We watched one arrive, unload and load trucks & cars and depart in about 20 minutes. For scenic grandeur the last 2 days of touring on Skye has been wonderful. So many vistas opened up at turns in the very narrow one-lane roads. The highlight was a trip down a glen on the south-east coast to Loch Brittle. Here we had close-up views of the famous Cuillin Hills. (we think the pronunciation is coo-lin as in food) Great photo opportunities were presented. ... read more
