If we thought it was a little cold in Ireland, we knew it was cold when we got to Scotland! With 2 nights in Edinburgh and 3 nights in Inverness it was another flat out tour of a country. We love to keep busy. We had booked our accommodation for the whole stay so arriving was no drama. We checked into the Caledonian Backpackers Hostel on Princess Street at about 11pm. The place seemed like it used to be a huge mansion or something with its winding stairs and huge 38 bed dorms. There was also amazing artwork all over the massive walls through the corridors and in the common areas. Breakfast was included at the hostel which was a great cheap start to our first day. We wandered to Edinburgh Castle which was amazing. There ... read more

Geo: 57.1431, -4.68296We began this morning at 5:45 thanks to our trusty alarm clock, Rich. After getting ourselves in order, it was off to another Scottish breakfast at Mac Donald's. (Ahem.) Stand E was only a brief walk away and while waiting for our bus we explored another really old cemetery. We saw graves of people who were buried before America declared independence. The "newest" monument in the cemetery was a statue of Abraham Lincoln. It was strange.Upon boarding the bus, we met Bill, an animated and well-versed Scotsman (kilt included), who made our day a wonderful one. We headed north from Edinburgh into the Highlands and completely trumped the Friday the 13th garbage by enjoying a SUNNY day. From a distance, we passed Stirling Castle, where William Wallace turned back the English by destroying a ... read more

Relatively speaking, I was on home soil for this trip, and acting as a tour companion for a couple who had flown in from the Far East to take in the sights and sounds of this Scottish gem which many a seasoned traveller sings the praises of. Driving to Skye from home in Yorkshire was, in terms of journey time, something akin to a long-haul flight, and it therefore came as no surprise that the first port of call on the island was to be Kyleakin, a stone's throw from Skye bridge. My newly-purchased satnav took us to the guest house's doorstep, which was as convenient as you could have asked for, and first impressions of the island were as pleasant as any member of our mini tour party could have hoped for. The B and ... read more

Well who’da thunk it’s nearly been a month since my last entry… geez time flys when your having fun. It’s been a few weekends of going out and discovering our one of our fave new cheap drinking spots (Berlin Bar) with hot Polish security guards, getting cheap haircuts (a lot shorter than I had asked for), dying our own hair (not since high school, the thangs ya do when your traveling, agh) didn’t turn out too badly though, and trying to get out of the hoose when it’s not raining!! You cannot go anywhere here without an umbrella. I,ve given up on thinking the weather’s going to be good just because the sun shines for half a day... if your lucky. It’s Friday night here and I,ve got the whole flat to myself. Just realized ... read more

"Anything off the trolley, dears?" So we took a trip of Jackobite Steam Engine, in other words "The Hogwarts Express". We were in first class which means we had "complimentary tea and biscuits and more leg room" (said in a British accent). After settling down, we explored the train and found the actual compartments that were used for the Harry Potter movies, and surprisingly enough they looked EXACTLY the same in real life as they do on the big screen! It was pretty incredible. The scenery during the trip was a bunch of mountains, which is where they filmed the Quidditch matches and Hagrid's hut (if you have no idea what I'm talking about then you obviously haven't lived) and so it was cool to see that, even if we don't know exactly where it ... read more

On Monday 25th June I left my cosy hostel (big up for Travellers Oasis) my tip for Cairns is if you're prepared to go the far side of Cairns Central Shopping Central you'll get better comfort and peace at night for your money but still be in easy reach of where the action is. Took my final flights, first of all the sharp turn on take off from Cairns International, wish they did not insist on getting there 3 hours early, there is not a lot to do in their departure lounge. Had a short stop at Darwin, took in the heat in the only outside space I could find, the smokers area. Had the luxury of the emergency exit seats but this meant in the event of an emergency, I would have the responsibility ... read more

Happy 4th of July to everyone back in the states! Terrible weather day here for the most part. We started the day seeing a couple sights close to Inverness. The Culloden Battlefield where the Scots (who thought one of their guys should be king!) were thoroughly overmatched and routed in a battle with the British army - over 1000 killed and the battle lasted less than an hour. Then we visited Cawdor Castle (of 'Macbeth' fame). Very interesting and still lived in. We left for Edinburgh in the mid-afternoon and as we got close to the city, it finally stopped raining and we saw the sun for the first time today. Tomorrow looks like a rarity - no rain forecast! We'll see ... ... read more

It's the 4th of July and we can't find any fireworks? I wonder why?? Today we slept in a little while and laid around the lodge, drank tea, read books, etc. We also went into Fort Augustus and watched the sailboats going from Loch Linnhe to Loch Ness on the locks. Instead of mules (like on the Erie canal song) the owners had to tow their own boats! Then we took a boat trip on Loch Ness. You'll never guess what we saw.......(check out the video in the corner)... read more

Leslie is writing today's blog, because Emma is exhausted from all the castles we've made her explore. We left Edinburgh yesterday, crossed the Firth Of Forth bridge, and went to Pitlochry to see the salmon ladder (it helps the salmon swim upstream over the dam). Next we drove on some really narrow roads, through some amazing scenery (mountains, heather, sheep-some in the road!) We spent the night at the Kidrummy Castle Hotel (overlooking the 13th century ruins of the first castle). It was a very lovely wee castle (with no internet, John and Emma complained) We had haggis! This morning (after having a hearty Scottish breakfast) we went to Balmoral Castle -- See the movie "The Queen" -- I was thrilled, everyone else, not so much. Caroline like the Queen's dresses on display, John liked ... read more

Well, we finally had a great weather day! And perfect timing - today we went out on Loch Ness and toured Urquhart Castle. The loch was very calm and it was very picturesque. We had about a 30 minute boat ride out to the castle, whic was built to protect the southeast part of the loch. It was built in the 12th century - mostly ruins now, but enough still to identify parts of the castle grounds. Also today we did laundry! Found a laundrette in town, staffed by a wonderful woman who helped us get everything done. (She even puts the soap powder in the washer!) Had a relaxing evening - Jeff and Allison had dinner at a small Italian restaurant in town while the kids stayed in and ordered room service. Tomorrow - ... read more
