Today was the hottest day I’ve experienced so far in London. I’m not sure what the maximum temperature was but it would certainly have compared nicely to any stinking hot Sydney summer day. Catching the tube was no fun today. It is hot enough on the coolest of days but with the simmering surface temperature I felt like a potato about to be roasted in a very hot oven. First stop today was Canary Wharf where myself and Bel (Andy Sanderson’s girlfriend) popped into Carluccio’s to break some bread (literally) and enjoy a hot beverage. For only 3 pounds you get a small tin containing a variety of bread accompanied with your choice of olive oil or butter for dipping or spreading. It was an excellent way to start our trek to the Millennium Dome. We ... read more

Well helloooo everybody!! This is our first entry... so don't expect much! What a mad day we had yesterday!! Completion day (suposedly at least!) and come 2.30pm we hadn't heard from our solicitors yet. To say we were a bit twitchy is a bit of an understatement.... After a few phone calls it became obvious the money was not going to come through from the bottom of the chain, so panic started to set in. Not as bad for us as it must have been for our buyers - they had a truck full of plants (no exaggerating, we mean FULL), 8 (yes, that'll be "eight") scared cats in cages and enough boxes to fill the town hall and nowhere to go had we put our foot down and refused to let them in. But, ... read more

Yesterday was a lovely warm summers day and, as Benny and I had nothing much to do, we decided to take a pleasant country drive to his friend's estate for a leisurely game of badminton in the back garden of his 500 year old mansion! I felt it was a most English thing to do and worthy of an entry! Also, as I was feeling a tad idle in the morning (oh, did I mention that for best effect, you should read this in a posh British accent?) I wondered what my good friends Alaya and Ash were up to, and so promptly bought a plane ticket to Austria in order to find out! To my pleasant surprise, it was only advertised at the splendid price of £2.50! Much better value than the sodding old lear-jet, ... read more

Just a bit of a random photo thingy with sport as they common thread. First of all are some photos from the football, and not the sport of Aussie Rules fooball I used to love (due to an abysmal year that vastly resembled the one before and the one before that the mighty Hawthorn Hawks are now dead to me - Shane who?). In an attempt to find a replacement team in a replacement sport to love I took Alice and Craig to Fulham v Everton for their birthdays. It was all very easy to get a ticket, the crowd was well behaved, the seats great (even though they were the cheapies) and it was all fun. I don't think I barrack for Fulham or Everton though so will have to keep searching.... maybe Liverpool... Two ... read more

Yesterday (Monday 29th August) I travelled north to the lovely, easy going county of Lincolnshire for a tour with former ASIC colleague Terry Quanborough. Terry and I were planning on spending the day at the Trent Bridge test match but unfortunately as most would be aware, it ended in a dramatic Australian loss to England on day four. However, I was not going to let that get in the way of a good holiday and with Terry's offer of a guided tour of his home county I headed to Grantham Town, Terry’s boyhood home. Terry met me at Grantham Station and gave me a brief yet comprehensive tour of the place he grew up to love. Unfortunately for Terry, Grantham has changed a fair bit since he lived here and I get the impression that it ... read more

I’ve now moved on from my brother’s flat in Borough, to the other side of London. I’m now spending the week, courtesy of my friend Dom Tilden and his lovely girlfriend Amanda in the neighborhood of Fulham before flying over to Ireland on Friday (2nd September). They have gone to Majorca for a week and have left me in charge of things here. I certainly appreciate the opportunity to live in this lovely part of London. Fulham is very agreeable for many reasons. Firstly its an excellent place for food and drink, its close enough to town without being too close and its home to the beautiful (but often overlooked) Fulham Palace, which sits inside the very lovely Bishops Park which is in turn hugged by the Thames Path, a picturesque walkway that winds its away ... read more

After planning for what seems like a significant chunk of my life, I am mere days away from leaving the country, and everything with which I am familiar, behind for seven months. I am calmer than I thought I would be. I feel I'm ready - my flights are sorted, my rucksack is packed, all my documents are ready and my first nights accomodation is booked - and whilst I am apprehensive about what is to come, I am certain I can handle anything that will happen over the next few months. Having left the working world behind I felt a sense of euphoria at the thought of having so little in the way of responsibilty for such a long time. I can get up when I want, go where I want and spend my time ... read more

As I write this it is seventy three days until I will arrive in Russia. My adventures will take me to Yaroslavl in september for the first semester, then after a quick trip home I'll start in Tver next spring. Both cities have a population of about 600,000, and are situated roughly a six hour train journey north of Moscow. At the moment the idea of going to Russia is really exciting. As most of you already know I tend to act first and think later - I'm not the type to get nervous about things! There might be a last minute panic, but the move should go well if I do everything that I need to on time. I haven't applied for a visa yet, or found out about tuition fees. My Russian isn't great ... read more
