So guys, this is it!!! After the rounds of, "really?! but why?!", erasmus sign-up pitfalls, semester overlaps, passport stress and of course the still non-existent accomodation, i'm off to Spain in under a fortnight. For those who have lived the last year sticking their fingers in their ears whenever i'm around, I'm off for 5 months of studying English Lit at the University in Zaragoza. I still can't pinpoint exactly why - because i could and the idea was random enough to appeal? because i want to become bilingual before i'm 30? because i love sangria and was told the fags would be cheap (I'm talking cigarettes here mike)?! Hopefully this blog can let you all know what I'm up to, show you pictures without clogging your inboxes, remind you all that I am only a ... read more

Family, Friends & Former Colleagues, Welcome to our first TravelBlog entry! As you are reading this, you're well on the way to finding out what we're up to, where we've been to and where we're going next ... if our resolve holds good you'll find it all here as the weeks go by! We hope this is the first of many entries over the next 4 months, and that you will enjoy reading about our experiences in our whistle stop tour of South America / New Zealand / Australia / Indonesia / Philippines / Hong Kong / Singapore / Malaysia / Thailand (returning home in January 2006)! The two maps that accompany this message reasonably accurately plot our route around the globe - your challenge is to identify the rogue entries on each map (hint: no ... read more

After being amused by extraneous English town names like 'Stow-on-the-Wold' and 'Bourton-on-the-Water' I found myself driving north with Benny & his mate Matt to 'Kingston-Upon-Hull' when it dawned on me that they weren't really into the whole brevity thing here in the UK... Passing through 'Little-Rissington-of-Four-Score-unto-Twain' and 'Waddington-girt-by-the-Mound-at-the-Angle-to-the-Perpendicular-at-which-the-Mistress-of-the-Stile-did'th-Micturate'... (no, no really... i made them up...) we arrived in the afternoon at a city where the sky was closer to the ground than your average 5 year old- Hull. I think the only thing Hull is famous for is being bombed in the 2nd world war... that and it's record of having the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Europe! Still, Benny's friend-of-friend, Adam, who was 24 and still not pregnant was an absolute legend and let us stay in his... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Somerset » Bath September 5th 2005

This morning we headed off to Bath. Bath is a medium sized Georgian town with a natural hot springs. When the Romans occupied England over 2000 years ago they built the Roman Baths which now sit in the center of Bath City. The baths were used as a religious spa where everyone from the town came to worship the Roman gods, socialize, and drink lots of wine. When the Romans left England 400 years later the baths were forgotten about and were covered in mud. Only 180 years ago they were rediscovered and dug out. Now, they are a major site that people come to see. While in Bath we also went to the Bath Abbey. It was built in 1499 by Bishop Oliver King who tore down the Norman Cathedral to build the Abbey. I spent the weekend in Bristol living a bit like a local and a bit like a tourist. First off, Ian drove me around the city to see all the important sights: Welsh Back - the neighbourhood by the docks where the Welsh ships used to come in to sell goods. Have you ever heard of “Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion”? It means to be neat and tidy and comes from the Bristol ships which had to have a certain shaped hull and had to bring in their sails in a certain manner in order to sail into the Bristol docks. The Welsh ships were in a different design so they couldn’t make it into the regular docks. As a result, they stayed in a different part of the river to sell their goods called the ... read more

Hey, Short version: I've been to Brighton: shopping, pubs, clubs, Stonehenge, and Salisbury. Interesting times. Long version: I have been all over. I am physically beat. On my way back to my flat from here yesterday, these girls asked me if I wanted to go to Brighton with them. I had no idea who they were, but they looked pretty normal....so I went. It was my first time in Brighton. I found it very very cosmopolitan; however, there is kind of dingy feel to the city. I think this is because it was really popular during the 60s among the "mod" culture (watch the movie Quadrophenia produced by The Who if you are interested in that sort of thing). Anyway, yeah so alot of it was built up in the 60s in a rush and hasn't ... read more

First, I want to say how crazy it is that my Spanish Visa came just a few hours before I left for the airport yesterday. I would have been so mad if I would have had to change my flights. Anyway, my flight left DIA on time and arrived in London a little early. It was the longest plane ride I have ever been on (9 hours), but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My seat was just a regular one, but the plane was pretty big which I think made it better. I kind of had a hard time falling asleep sitting up, but I think that I got a few hours in. The time change is pretty crazy. It feels like days have gone by since I have left, but ... read more
