Inside Lincoln Cathedral
One of the many stained glass windows in the beautiful Lincoln Cathedral Yesterday (Monday 29th August) I travelled north to the lovely, easy going county of Lincolnshire for a tour with former ASIC colleague Terry Quanborough.
Terry and I were planning on spending the day at the Trent Bridge test match but unfortunately as most would be aware, it ended in a dramatic Australian loss to England on day four.
However, I was not going to let that get in the way of a good holiday and with Terry's offer of a guided tour of his home county I headed to Grantham Town, Terry’s boyhood home.
Terry met me at Grantham Station and gave me a brief yet comprehensive tour of the place he grew up to love. Unfortunately for Terry, Grantham has changed a fair bit since he lived here and I get the impression that it has lost a lot of its charm with the introduction of massive supermarkets and distasteful 1970s architecture.
We headed out of Grantham to see the Belvoir Castle, occupied by the Duke of Rutland and recently used in the Catherine Zeta-Jones film The Haunting.
The country side is just marvelous and made a refreshing change from the intensity of London. Lincolnshire
Lincoln Cathedral
The imposing Lincoln Cathedral, on top of Steep Hill Road can be seen up to 30kms away. is one of the flattest counties in England and it seems you are able to stare forever into the distance, easily picking out each village by its church steeple.
After a stop for a pint of the local brew and some lunch just outside of Grantham it was on to the ancient and easy paced city of Lincoln, home to the most beautiful Lincoln Cathedral and imposing Lincoln Castle.
No trip to Lincoln is complete without a visit to the Cathedral. Set high on a hillside overlooking the City it a most impressive structure and can be seen from all parts of the county up to 30 km away.
If you like historic architecture, the cathedral is worth taking a look at. If your not, its still worth a the walk to the top of Steep Hill Road just to browse around the narrow, cobble stoned streets in that area.
Just a word of warning, Steep Hill Road isn’t called that for nothing. If you do manage to walk to the top of the hill you can stop in the Mitre and Wig pub for a local brew, Terry and I certainly needed to rehydrate after
Steep Hill Road
This photo doesn't do the steepness justice...its a very steep hill!! our walk!
Nearby Lincoln Castle which was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 was used as a court and prison where guilty prisoners were either executed or later on deported to Australia (the lucky ones!)
In the end, a thoroughly interesting trip to Lincolnshire. I would definitely recommend a visit if you would like to spend a day out of London and away from the crowds of the big city.
I returned home to Fulham and met up with friend Andy Sanderson and his girlfriend Bel.
DA VINCI CODE FANS NOTE: Those that have read the book will know that Robert Langdon goes to Westminster Abbey in search of answers. However the film makers were refused entry to shoot these scenes for the movie (which stars Tom Hanks) in the famous old church so they headed straight to Lincoln Cathedral and used that instead.
