Hi Everyone, I have recovered from my jet lag and preparations for the world championships are in full swing. Yesterday we went to watch Jock have his final lesson. His horse, Promise looks amazing and Jock feels he has peaked and should be good for Friday when he does his dressage test. Jock, his groom,Anka and Promise headed off for the ferry from Portsmouth to Caen in Normandy this evening. We will follow in the morning. It is a 6-7 hour ferry trip and the horses say standing in the truck. The Canadian team were due to go this morning but had to find alternatives. No livestock was allowed on because the channel crossing was too rough. Horses can become sick but are unable to vomit and seasickness would make them very unwell. The seas have ... read more

I have lots of places that I have been to which I always want to return to and the Cornish Coast is one of them. We first went there way back in 1991and I always enjoy revisiting it. So we drove across to the beautiful Clovelly fishing village first. {Not Cornish}but beautiful. Stayed right on the waters edge at The Red Lion Hotel. The village has a lot of history and it is beautiful to stroll from the top down to the harbour. Could quite easily spend a few days there. Down the coast to Boscastle, the first of the Cornish coasts magic fishing villages with a great history, even recently when it suffered a huge flood that washed most of it out to sea in 2004. It has been lovingly rebuilt and still retains its ... read more

So here we are in England with Pam and Warwick and we have filled our days up well so far. Di and I left Norway with some regret but it is also nice to be on the move again. The last few days in Bergen filled with a few walks and trips into town. One day we went into town to meet up with Dave Ellison, a friend that I dealt with through work for over 35 years, and his wife, for lunch. Dave's wife Judith has relations who live in Bergen due to her father having been born there and coming to NZ as an adult. I always find it amazing whenever I meet people I know on the other side of the world. Unfortunately it was a wet day but we enjoyed a walk ... read more

Hello There, We are now in England in the village of Corsham, not far from Bath and we have meet up with Pam and Warwick. Yesterday we left Bergen with a large amount of regret at leaving the kids but with the excitement off the next stage of our trip. The stay of 2 weeks in Spain and then 4 weeks in Norway with the kids was just brilliant and it is always very emotional when leaving them. The good thing is that we will see them at Christmas as they will be joining us down under for over 3 weeks. So that keeps us going and we can't wait to see Lilly and Stella together with their NZ cousins Holly and Ella as well as Chris, Hege, Amy and Jeremy being together again. It will ... read more

I woke up around 8 this morning to catch my 8:30 tour with Madmax. Once I saw the bus and met our tour guide Tim, I got on. We drove for about an hour until we reached Stonehenge. It ended up costing me 12.50 pounds to get in as a student. They have a visitors center which is included in the ticket. They have a little safari looking trolley that takes you out to the henge, about a mile away. Once I got there, I got to roam around, but wasn’t able to touch the stones. Pictures make Stonehenge look a lot bigger than it actually is. When you look out at the scenery around Stonehenge, you see a lot of mounds in the distance. They are all burial mounds. In them remains of a human ... read more

Day 11 - And You Thought the Alamo Was Old After a fine breakfast provided by our B&B hosts we scuttled off to Stonehenge just up the road from Salisbury. The rain that had been hovering about 3 days off the whole time we have been here finally caught up with us and we hoped to see Stonehenge before the real rain started. The site was closed off several years ago to prevent damage that was being done by the hordes of visitors every year. The last time Tony was there you were not able to get very close and had to look at the site through a wooden fence. The new arrangements are much better. While you can not walk among the stones unless you have a special tour time, you can get very close ... read more

Well in the end quite a good night’s rest - although climbing down from a bunk in the dark to go to the toilet without waking all the other inhabitants in the room, is not the easiest thing in the world. I think I managed it though - 2 of them still slept through and the one that did call out – didn’t remember it in the morning!!! In the morning I met inhabitant number 4, another huge character who was retired and from Yorkshire but had a similar interest in spiritual things. In short they were 3 very interesting fellows even in the short time I spoke to them – they were all there soaking up the spiritualism of Glastonbury, which is definitely worth a revisit. I think 1 of them was spending the day ... read more

Stonehenge is a fantastic place that I love to visit each year by coach (see here Newmarket Holidays Wikipedia page) I want to share with you just what I feel this stalwart of UK heritage has to offer. The author of Historia Regum Britanniae, Geoffrey of Monmouth, wrote a story attributing the construction of Stonehenge to the great wizard Merlin. According to the story, the huge rocks called Giant’s dance have healing properties and were brought by Giants from Africa and taken to Ireland. During the fifth century, the king sent Uther Pendragon and 15,000 knights to get it from Ireland so he could erect a memorial for 3,000 noble... read more
