At last. We have left the cold of our NZ winter and arrived yesterday in England to wonderful warm weather. I do find that the cold of winter is getting harder to take, so I am very pleased to look forward to the next 3 months in the warmer climates. We left home, NZ, at 4.45pm on Monday the 2nd July and flew NZ to Hong Kong then right through to Heathrow, London, arriving at 2.30pm on Tuesday the 3rd, so a trip of 30 hours after crossing the date line. Very tiring but thats the way it is. So now we are spending the next 4 weeks in Corsham at Pete and Helens. We just love this place and all of the surrounding area, where the walking is great, the country side magic, and the ... read more

Saturday March 31,2018 Awoke to cold, damp and cloudy today! After breakfast and getting dressed,Philipp,Sally and I got into the car and drove towards my cousin Hermione,Jim,Jake and Amelie’s house in Wiltshire. I had not seen them all for a number of years and his would be the first time to see their house . Uncle Jeremy was still playing Tennis and would join us all afterwards later. It took us only about an hour and ten minutes to get up to Hermione&Jim‘s. Beautiful and rolling countryside! We arrived and were greeted by Hermione&Jim, we all hugged and said hello to one another. We also hugged my other cousin Henry,Rachel,Ella and Felix as well who came up from Faringdon-near Oxford. I had not seen the four of them in about two years and it was great to ... read more

The weather was nice all the way down to the New Forest, with the only hold up being Lyndhurst, where I was only 2 miles from the campsite, so just accepted it, rather than look for a detour. This site was annoying, as reception was only open for a couple of hours in the morning, and pitching was a free for all. Once I'd pitched I did a reccie and got my onboard tank filled with water. Wednesday morning I had booked a ferry to take me over to the Isle of Wight, so wasn't going to be around for reception to be open, but I'd already paid so didn't really mind. The port was only 8 miles away, but not knowing if the route down, would be easy, or a struggle, I gave myself over an ... read more

Waterloo to Westbury I set off early in the morning and walked down to Westbury station to take the train to London Waterloo gleefully watching all the commuters scurrying off to work. What a pleasure to observe without being involved in the scurrying. From Waterloo it is a short walk down to the banks of the Thames. There is a signed pathway from the Thames Flood Barrier at Woolwich all the way to the source of the river near Kemble in Gloucestershire. For those of you who may have headed north from Westbury, towards the Cotswolds, you may remember passing a freight airport with lots of aging Jumbo Jets parked on the tarmac, on the left hand side, Cotswolds Airport - Kemble is just there. The South Bank of the Thames in Central London has been ... read more

Thursday morning I took the full suss out for a bit of an explore, and the bike was in its element. All the rocks and ruts that had tried to break the 920, were simply rolled over with very little problem. So I started trying a few routes that split off from the main tracks and found some amazing views of small beaches along the coast, all the while trying my best not to go to far to the bottom of the hill, as 1300 feet is a long way to go back up. I'd also decided to do the laundry that morning as the MET office had said it would be dry till the evening, but no, it rained off and on, pretty much from the time I put the washing on the line, till ... read more

Hi everyone, this is my first of hopefully many blog posts! I'm going on a trip to Sri Lanka in a few days and then on to see my grandparents in New Zealand a few months later, so I thought it would be good to have an online blog which I can add to :) I thought I'd add this blog post about my recent trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge to help me find my feet on using the site/blog. I went to Salisbury last month (work related). I've been a few times but never took the time to see the sights and I was interested in seeing the iconic cathedral and of course Stonehenge. There were a few tours available but decided to go with these which cost me £35. I would have taken pics ... read more

Geo: 51.5848, -2.0996A drive to Great Somerford, a beautiful village Wiltshire village at the southern end of the Cotswolds, to stay with my cousin Meriel and her family. A short drive away is Malmesbury, supposedly the oldest continually inhabited town in England. Modern excavations have revealed the remains of an Iron Age fort which would date it back to around 500BC, but official records can trace Malmesbury back to the 5th century. The imposing 7th century Abbey sits atop the hill and became a site of pilgrimage and learning and later in the 10th century, Athelstan, first king of (all) England and grandson of Alfred the Great made Malmesbury his capital. The medieval streets are lined with honey colored stone buildings and the marketplace in the centre of town has a magnificently preserved 15th century market cross. But what ... read more

Yes, we have had wonderful sunshine for the last 10 days although the evenings are still cold. Spending time strolling the lanes and pathways with the dogs, helping Helen and Pete with a couple of projects they are doing in the garden and just having a lazy but interesting time. We caught the train into Bristol one day , had a ferry ride around the harbour and strolled along the waterfront until Pete finished work, then we had a meal looking out over the water. Very nice and we were most impressed with the Bristol that we saw. We did see it in it's best light, with a fantastic day, no wind and warm sunshine. People were out sitting along the waterfront and having picnics and drinks. After dinner we went to a concert of 2 ... read more

We arrived at Heathrow last week and went to Stephanie and Robin's new house in Romford, London to spend a couple of nights before heading south to Corsham, near Bath. So nice to catch up with the two of them and see their house which they only moved into a few weeks ago. A nice evening spent catching up then up early to catch the train, then tube, in to Oxford St, London to meet up with Terri Seamark from Kirkcaldie's days for a catch up. We had coffee and scones while we talked and Di went of to look around a couple of shops while Terri and I caught up with any gossip we knew and then the 3 off us went and did a bit of shopping in Oxford St. Terri left Di and ... read more

Geo: 51.4352, -2.00278We were so excited, when we woke, to find frost on the ground and icicles on the former windows. As the sun came up, we scampered outside to see the Cherhill White Horse, carved into the chalk hills behind our cottage, and the Lansdowne monument (38m stone obelisk), both 18th century works. Breakfast of eggs on toast, kindly provided by our hostess, then out the door. We had a little excitement when (after removing a significant layer of ice from the car!) the warning light on the car came on red, but as it only related to an oil service, the hire company says to drive on. We took a scenic drive in the beautiful (cold) sunshine - G thinks it always shines in England, and so far, she hasn't been disappointed!! - through ... read more
