May 21st 2005 Bayswater, London, England. Today I was up at the crack of dawn and off on a £15 bus tour to see Stonehenge and the nearby town of Salisbury. The bus was pretty awful, with very tiny seats and no legroom. People who know me are cognizant of the fact that I'm not anywhere near approaching tall, yet even I couldn’t fit my legs into the space between my seat and the one in front. It was also booked out, so there was no room to be had with an empty seat to the side, either. But, hey, you get what you pay for. Happily, that is where the day's negatives ended. The legendary Stonehenge, set high on a field on the Salisbury Plains, really is pretty darned awesome. The initial site was actually ... read more

We got here! It seemed so far away on the map and we took 7 days to get here. I did not really believe that we could get there until we were crossing the Severn bridge towards Bristol, when finally Wiltshire seemed close. Robin was quite stressed with our progress or lack of it for the first couple of days after Kendal But it was hilly and we made up the time once we hit Staffordshire (my favourite county so far as it was downhill!) I now have a better idea of the geography of England-well the bits I cycled through! We went to Dent from Kendal and camped near Settle on the first night. I enjoyed the hills in the Dales, very long but not too steep and there were loads of other cyclists. Then ... read more

Well, at least I think I'm in Southsea - maybe its Seaforth. Eh, either way - I'm somewhere near Portsmouth, (which I think is in Wiltshire - or at least near there). We're staying in a hostel againg tonight - which is good because it means I can get on the Internet and bore you all senseless with what I've been up. The unfortuate part of the story is that there is only ONE room in this place where you are allowed to smoke - the same room where the internet access is. Doh! Ok, now that I've completely confused everyone as to where exactly I am, and complained about the cloud of smoke I'm looking at this screen through, I'll start on the more interesting stuff... We spent a fair while exploring Edinburgh castle - ... read more

Just back from my weekend trip to Stonehenge/Bath/Salisbury. We stayed in a really nice little guesthouse/bed and breakfast in Salisbury. The owner was super nice, the place was way nicer than I expected, and the food was good (though we missed the "breakfast" part of "bed and breakfast" on Sunday. Sleeping is good. Whoops. :p). I definately enjoyed the b&b way more than I would have enjoyed a hostel. It was so nice... kind of like staying in someone's house. And even though the bathroom was shared by a whole floor, I felt sure that it was clean, and the TP was even often folded into a point, which pleased me in an odd way. The real bonus was it was actually a few pounds cheaper than the only hostel that wasn't booked up. We saw ... read more

What have I been up to? Been a while since an update. Had another trip up north to Ashbourne, big fun as always, full weekend with a comute to London on Monday morning. Works alright, biggest headache is the computers, but Ive been told Im going to the top of the list as this thing is super shagged. Had a great time at kiwi Johns bday party a couple of weekends ago at the blag club, followed on the Sunday night by English Alexs birthday at Underdog, complete with pirate fancy dress. Me and some workmates have discovered a couple of bars around work with 2 for 1 happy hours on Friday nights, so they've become a regular fixture! Spent this weekend just gone with Alan and Fiona down in New Milton, by Southhampton. Always nice ... read more

Stonehenge is the most important prehistoric monument in the whole of Britain. It is unique, and there is nothing else like it anywhere in the world. From the earliest times it has aroused the awe of visiters as one of the wonders of Britain. The monument we see today is the much ruined final phase of Stonehenge, the prehistoric temple in use some 3,600 years ago.... read more

Off to Shakespeare country, but first a detour to the village of Lacock. Initially the attraction was the Fox Talbot Museum, but Lacock is a charming village. For me a discovered gem, because I had no knowledge of its existence before I went to Bath. Dating back to the 13th century it has many lime washed, half-timbered and stone houses. Because of its picturesque charm it is often used as a set for films and television. The television series Jane Austen WILL be filmed here in 1995. First area specially visited was the cemetery to see the grave of William Henry Fox Talbot (1800 - 1877). It is marked by a very prominent grave stone. Talbot is most noted for the invention of negative/positive photography. He also made contributions to mathematics, optics, astronomy, archeology and had ... read more
