Friday – 16/9/2016 Picking up from my last blog, in Bristol we picked up our dispersed travellers and returned to Bath, where we’d moored before on the river. The last time we were there we were wondering if we could continue with our trip. Thankfully, Paul’s back was considerably better. He was still in some pain but there was improvement. While chugging up the river, Susan tried her hand at the locks and did very well. Dale was a pro and a great help. One of the deeper locks was interesting to watch. Jill ducked inside, so that she didn’t get wet, but was like a coiled spring, jumping up and peeking at everything, wanting to see what was going on. The lock took ages to fill; such a great force of water. Another interesting sight ... read more

Canal boat trip Join us for a canal boat trip they said. It'll be fun, they said. Not if you like your privacy and don't want to be living in confined quarters. You might have visions of sitting with your feet up while sipping a glass of wine or ale, drifting gently down a stretch of crystal clear water enjoying the sights along the edge of the canals, sounds perfect. You're likely to be kept busy hopping on and off boats and running from port to starboard. Yes, OK, the distance between the two sides are only about a meter and a half apart. That's the interior and the exterior width is all of 2 meters wide. But you would develop those biceps and triceps to look like Popeye's while winding the windlass to open and ... read more

Travels without Claud 20160910 Home to home I really enjoyed writing my circumspect travel blog on the joys of cycling in the Netherlands; so I thought that as and when the mood takes me I’d write the occasional piece. It’s Saturday morning, it’s already almost mid-September, and it’s pouring with rain. There’s just me and the dog at home for the weekend. I think this might be the very first time ever that I’ve spent four days alone in the family home. I’m not entirely sure what odd set of coincidences eventually brought that about, but it did, and here I am. I’m not feeling especially lonely, I’ve learned to quite like being on my own. I think it stems from being uprooted every two years as a kid, and moving to some new and foreign ... read more

Going on a canal trip had been on our bucket list for ages. The time had finally arrived and it was difficult to curb our enthusiasm. Three days into the trip, it was another story. Having your husband collapse in agony, not certain if we could continue and a possibility of him spending some time in hospital was a sure way to put a dampener on that excitement. Having flown with Virgin Atlantic, which was a pleasant experience, we arrived at Heathrow. We needed to get to Paddington station then Bradford on Avon, which meant a few change overs of trains. Our first mistake was being ‘assisted’ by a lady selling tickets from Heathrow to Paddington. Very helpful, she sold us the most expensive 15 minute train ride – the Heathrow express. Be warned; ask if ... read more

Nice drive to Stone Henge today followed by a stop in the medieval town of Salisbury and the Salisbury Cathedral. Very impressive architecture on the cathedral and quaint old buildings. Stone Henge is amazing up close, pics don't do it justice, but we tried..... We popped over to South Hampton to have a look at some of the apartments Lynne Manages. Later we had fish and chips by the sea at Milford on Sea. Yum.... read more

The Last day at Hadrians Wall was spent on a couple of walks, then off to drive down the coast from Newcastle, taking a couple of days on our travels back to Wiltshire. On the drive south we dropped into some magic little coastal villages, like Staithe and Saltburn-By-The- Sea. Also some larger towns such as Whitby and Scarborough. The coast is made up of cliffs and beaches with some nice inlets with small harbours. Whitby of course is were we live in NZ, but this is the original Whitby and we took the opportunity to look around. Very nice beaches and interesting harbour, very much a holiday destination for the English. Like our home Whitby, Whitby UK is situated on the sea, but ours is on an inlet not the open sea. Although quite crowded ... read more

Jolly Olde England, Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge! Tony Hayter, our driver, http://www.silver-fleet.co.uk/, picks us up at the docks in Southampton and we are off to Salisbury Cathedral to see the Magna Carta. What the heck is the Magna Carta you may ask? Well… (You can skip this part if you don’t care ;-) Originally issued by King John of England (r.1199-1216) as a practical solution to the political crisis he faced in 1215, Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. Although nearly a third of the text was deleted or substantially rewritten within ten years, and almost all the clauses have been repealed in modern times, Magna Carta remains a cornerstone of the British constitution. Most of the 63 clauses granted b ... read more

Avebury Stone Circle was recommended by Bryson as a lesser visited stone formation than Stonehenge. It is a World Heritage Site. It started in the Bronze Age, and includes a 16th century manor house, and 17th century threshing barns. A small community is within the perimeter of the stone circle. It's fun to observe the white horses on the hillsides from afar. Only the Uffington white horse is of certain prehistoric origin, being some three thousand years old. Most of the others date from the last three hundred years or so, and the origins of some are impossible to establish with any certainty. They are accommplished by scraping away a thin layer of soil to exposed the chalk substrate. Stopped for a beer and while sitting on the deck, a whiteheaded bird flew in the tree ... read more

good afternoon dear readers, from the frozen north - frozen north of France that is !!!! Before you settle down to be regaled with tales of Gallic gaiety, be forewarned that this missive concerns itself with the much more tropical climes of Devizes in warm Wiltshire, for it is to there that your correspondent and his intrepid gang (Wendy, Cusco and Claude) deposited themselves for a final meeting of the escape committee. After your correspondent once got lost in his own thoughts, Wendy was worried enough that she went out to the shops to buy a Europe based satnav - I say went to the shops, when I mean she walked all the way upstairs and ordered one online on the PC - I say walked all the way upstairs, when I mean she didn't get ... read more

Stonehenge 2014 I finally took a roadtrip to see Stonehenge. You'd think since I was born and raised in London I would have seen this important historical monument already. But no, unfortunatly it was just never something I got around to, well until now at least! ;) I'd very much recommend pre-booking your ticket before you go there, because the queue for those who didn't was way too long (though it did seem to moving fairly quickly). On arrival you get given a little audio device you can listen to at your own leisure. Seemed to me that alot of people didn't bother with it but the information was actaully really interesting, hearing all about what's known and unknown about the the stones was fascinating :) There's a few other other things to see around here ... read more
