Leaving Salisbury yesterday was tough. I’ve become attached to my daily walks along on the Avon, so on my final morning, I revisited “my” tree at the river‘s confluence near the Cathedral. I sat on a bench and listened to the birds, the bells, and the city. Like throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, I hope it guaranteed my return... One hopeful indicator is that my AirBnB hosts are discussing a future in which they will spend time in other parts of the world (she’s from Indonesia and they’re building a home there). Serendipitously, they will be looking to rent out their lovely Salisbury home (with art studio ”at the bottom of the garden...) for six months at a time. We‘ve promised to stay in touch! Attached are a few more photos of this lovely ... read more

I admit that the last few weeks I’ve been feeling increasingly fretful about my three-month reconnaissance. I’d become resigned to returning home with no clear favorite place, and certainly no plausible ”home base” to which I’d want to return. There are some fabulous places to visit, but they were too big/small, too congested/remote, or lacked infrastructure/amenities to tempt me to stay for long. Then I arrived in Salisbury - and everything changed! Now cautiously optimistic, I won’t say it’s the “be all, end all,“ but it’s certainly ticking a lot of boxes.... It’s a compact city with a cathedral and college, plenty of shops and eateries, myriad attractive and historical buildings strewn about, and ample green space, with the rivers Avon, Nadder, Ebble, Wylie and Bourne veining the downtown and countryside. Larmer Tree Larmer tree The festival was from Thursday 19th till Sunday 22nd July, I was there for a week, giving me four extra days of an empty field, a view, the shade of a beech tree, and nearby woods. The festival was slightly different this year; more bands I hadn't heard of, fewer workshops and strolling players, more of the woods open. I did two Gong Bath sessions (no water, just lying on the ground under a canopy of trees, immersing oneself in the sound of the gongs and other percussive instruments). I was outside the tent (I'm always late for these things) so didn't get the full vibratory experience, but the sound drifted me off to the cacophony of traffic, a steam train, and a plane taking off, as well as the usual whale ... read more

Continuing great weather, very hot and dry. We have spent time catching up with friends and some of Di's relatives. Catching up with Norman and Rosemary, in Clevedon was great as we haven't seen them since 2016. Norman and I always spend time discussing and comparing our fishing stories while Di and Rosemary fill each other in re family affairs. A beautiful lunch and good conversation. We had a day trip up to Fernhurst, Sussex to meet up with friends Jackie and George, who are the parents of Sarah, our neighbour, from back home in NZ. Great to catch up over here as we only see them when they venture south to NZ to spend time with Sarah, Tony and the girls. We meet at a great country pub, Duke Of Cumberland Arms, and had a ... read more

Here in England we are continuing to have great weather. Enjoying the country side, walking and discovering new places to visit. We had friends from NZ pop into see us, Dave and Jan Goldsack with another couple, who were traveling around the area. A really nice catch up and a chance to show them some of the wonderful places that we walk and visit. I do love catching up with people from home when we are away. One of my highlights has been the Royal International Air Tattoo held at Fairford Air Force Base. An amazing day, with Pete, Simon and Kevon, watching Jets, Bombers, Transporters, Helicopters, Stunt Jets, and demonstrations of a fantastic variety of planes, old and new, from all over the world and from many different countries. Watching a jet go past at ... read more

Day 3… I managed to get a goodnight sleep even with the ruckus from other campers late into the night, and after porridge for breakfast and a black coffee I packed up a now dry tent and headed to my next Historical site. This was the Marlborough white horse a whopping 2 miles away, the only problem was finding a place to park as usual, being early on a Sunday I decided to just park on the road, which turned out to be ideal as it was quite close to the white horse; only a round trip off around 1 mile and I had a lot to do today including the drive home. A little history about the horse; This white horse was cut in 1804 by pupils of a boys' school run by a Mr ... read more

Day 2… I After the first thunderstorm and torrential rain in about a month I packed up my wet tent knowing that I’ll be unpacking it later this hot July Saturday. Then consulted my ordinance survey map. I discovered a footpath running right behind the camp site to Shrewton this is where I spotted another thing of historical interest. The blind house, or lock-up, is said to have been built c.1700. It is by the river bridge in Maddington Street and probably used mainly to house prisoners overnight when they were on their way from the Assize Courts in Devizes to Fisherton Gaol. The blind house was damaged by a tank during the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards, while in the 1980s it was moved back from the road edge to prevent further damage by ... read more

The Wiltshire Whirlwind tour Day 1.. The big day has finally arrived and I’m full of excitement for the day ahead but typically, I wanted the day off to spend three days travelling around Wiltshire but Salty Snacks needed their crisp delivered urgently, without fail and down in Andover Wiltshire. How I wanted to drive the lorry down there and park it up whilst travelling the fine and beautiful county then drive back Sunday, but I’m sure that would have been my last day driving lorries for them. Once I had the car loaded and was headed towards my first port of call down many winding country lanes I spied in the distance my first of eight horses the Uffington white horse. The oldest of all the white horses I’ll be seeing this weekend. Ok its ... read more

Magic!!! Wimbledon Tennis is something that Diane has wanted to go to for years. So Chris arranged through an acquaintance for a couple of tickets for a day, so Di and I had a magic day watching some great tennis and enjoying the surrounds of this iconic tennis championship venue. It really is such a spectacular venue and the atmosphere was amazing. As the weather here in England is so hot we expected it to be very very hot sitting in the stands. The day was one out of the blue with the temperature going over 31 degrees. Sitting in the stand you felt as if you were going to melt away. I felt for the players and the officials as down on the court the temps were getting up toward the 40 mark. But nothing ... read more
