THE OPEN 2014 AT ROYAL LIVERPOOL IN HOYLAKE My colleague and I, we have come for The Open 2014;and we are contentedly ensconced in our 23rd floor apartment, looking out, floor to ceiling windows, at both the languid Mersey River and the varied Liverpool skyscape; breathtaking. The range of architecture is quite engaging, classical to modern, featuring: domes and globes; a Ferris wheel in still form by day, seats unmoving, that emerges as a star in the evening; two Liverpool themed Liver-birds, be-decking impressive towers with huge working clocks of Roman numerals; a striking, shining, sky-reaching edifice, sister to our address, two panelled walls standing as gentle arcs, topped with building-wide steps sloping, reaching for the drifting clouds; two cathedrals, one, the Church of Rome, the other, of England; and a Habitat 67-Style building, featuring huge ... read more

What a week it has been! The bad news is...my allergies have been given me a hard time and made me lost my voice. The good news is...I'm still having the time of my life! We arrived in Edinburgh last Saturday and have been busy nonstop with sightseeing and exploring Scotland's capital. Our accommodations were very centrally located...right off the Royal Mile (the most happening and busy street of the city). The highlight of our hostel was the fact the showers were big enough to turn around in and had a separate water closet. And free breakfast. It's the little things, right? The history and architecture of this city is so beautiful and interesting. They have done such an amazing job preserving historic buildings, closes, and relics. There were moments where we would stop, look around, ... read more

Geo: 53.4108, -2.97748Well it looked like another sunny day ahead, we had planned to catch a train to Liverpool, so with a short walk to the Chester Train Station we bought our tickets for a 40 minute trip, and when we arrived, we grabbed a map and headed towards the Liverpool Eye, and towards the harbour. On the way there was so many huge beautiful old buildings, and with the sun shining, we just wanted to see everything. Down at the Liverpool eye, there was boats in the water , the Beatles yellow submarine , and the Joker's boat and a few others. We went into the Beatles shop, bought some souvenirs and walked a little further where we were going to see The Beatles Story until we found out the price to go in, we ... read more

My mother commenced her journey for another day at work. The bus was busy as usual, but this was to be no usual day. The date was Friday 12 June 1964, and it was the day that The Beatles answered a petition from the people of Adelaide, Australia (80,000 signatures obtained in three weeks) to perform a series of concerts in the city. My mother could hear the screams of delirious fans before she espied the crowds, a crush of people so immense that the streets were blocked and only buses could barely proceed. However, her bus crawled at such a slow pace that it was quicker to walk, so my mother disembarked and arrived, like everyone else, late for work. At least 300,000 people congregated to see The Beatles’ procession and balcony appearance at Town ... read more

Kelley had no idea where we were taking him. All he got was a note telling him to turn up at the Euston Tap at 7pm along with two pairs of undies, photo ID, a toothbrush, and ten vomit bags. By the time I had arrived at the Euston Tap, the most of the stag crew had already shown up - Yohei the chief organiser (who you may remember from Granada), Andrew (who you may remember from Milan), blog débutante Wilson, and Kelley the stag himself (who regular readers of this blog should know by now). Our numbers were complete when we were joined by Hanson (who you may remember from the Peak District) and Francis aka Turtle (who was also with Kelley, Yohei and I in Granada) who was the last t... read more

Day 8&9; another early morning, keeping in mind this was not to be a relaxing holiday but one to see and do and that's what I'm doing. This morning we traveled north from Lancashire to the Lake District. We drove along the shores of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake. Today was the day for bus, train and boat transportation. We traveled by bus, caught an old steam engine to Haverthaite and then took a cruise along the northern coastline of Lake Windermere, the scenery was spectacular,a photographer's paradise. This is another area that inspired the Romantic poets including William Wordsworth. He is buried at St Oswald's church in Grasmere, we visited his grave and then had lunch in this cute little tourist village. After lunch we boarded the bus once more and headed for Scotland, first ... read more

Took Erin to Moscow Circus and what fun. We had picked up two vouchers from a store which read "discount 50%" offer. So we line up with two vouchers and asked for two seniors and child. The ticket person said the child would have to be full price because we had no voucher. A very kind lady next to us said she had a spare in her car and gave it to us. But wait there is more - she was one pound short for her tickets so I offered to pay the pound. No thanks, enjoy the circus. Nice lady. Well what a circus. Bought Erin pop corn, which was almost devoured before the show started. At interval bought a special light up butterfly wavey thing. Then an ice-cream (mind you it was a heat ... read more

Arrived here last Saturday and with great joy and open arms were met by the family. Had coffee or similar with Paul and Belinda while Erin was at LIPA (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts). Apparently Paul McCartney (ex Beatle) has something to do with it. Sunday we drove to Manchester (Sale) for our church (ecclesia) and had a nice time. It was followed by a communal lunch and during this time we chatted with some lovely folks and even scored an invite to stay with a couple the night before we head to Scotland. Some may know Tom and Judith Griffiths as they have visited Adelaide in previous years. Monday was about taking Erin to school and visiting the model train store (Hattons) and yes the bag will have some extra goodies, but also they do ... read more
