My 2017 conference year started in early January—I went to the url=https://www1.bps.org.uk/events/conferences/division-occupational-psychology-annual-conference-2018/2017-conferenceAnnual Conference of the Division of Occupational Psychology (DOP) in Liverpool from 4th to 6th of January. My wonderful colleagues Lena and Richard, who were currently working in our London office, wanted to join me, so I decided to fly into London Heathrow and go up to Liverpool by car with them. It was a lengthy ride (with great company though) in which we discovered that it does not seem to be common to have service stations close to the motorway in the UK, which made fuelling up the car a little more time-consuming than we are used to, but finally we arrived in Liverpool. The conference hotel was located right at Albert Dock, thus in a nice location. The dock was considered a very ... read more

The trip on the Trans-Pennine express was flat from Hull to Leeds, and you could see the terrain that was once the floor of a tropical sea. West of Leeds there were undulating hills and some long tunnels as we crossed the Pennines, the spine of England. Wonderful landscape with the Peak district south of us and the Yorkshire Dales to the north. Walking out of Lime Street station one is on the Cultural Quarter - the grand St George’s Hall with four lions left over from Trafalgar square, (or was the tour bus guide kidding, with that irrepressible Scouse humour?), and St John's memorial park behind it commemorating different regiments, different wars, victims of persecution and pre-term babies, and the newest - the Hillsborough monument. The street beside this has the World Museum, the Walker ... read more

Another day in Liverpool. A bit of a sleep in after a great night before, then off to breakfast looking over the water. Looking forward to going on the Sandeman's walking tour of Liverpool again. What a great way to see the area and find out the history of Liverpool. Starting off from St Georges Hall. The Queen Victoria statue of her on a horse is still one of my likes and at the other end is the statue of Prince Albert on a horse also. Across the road we see the Liverpool Empire Theatre. The buildings here are solid and timeless. We started off on our little jaunt, following around the art gallery and to St Johns Gardens and the Hillsborough memorial. Down Whitechapel street and to the Eleanor Rigby statue. Of course from here ... read more

An early rise to the start of a busy day, but not until I have a full english breakfast before departing. As I stroll past the Casino and down to Queens wharf taking in the fresh air. I thought it quite amusing as I am walking down past the Wapping dock and I see 4 ducks crossing the road (Just like the Beatles did at Abbey Road). It made me smile as they waddled their way across the road to a lawned area to meet other ducks. Walking up to the Echo Arena, I decided to go on the Wheel of Liverpool to get a good view of the Mersey river and the city from high above. While on it though, the rain came down - luckily I was not out in it and it did ... read more

Today, I take the National Express to Liverpool. The countryside from the bus was amazing leading toward the end of summer and into Autumn. It's Beatles week with only 2 days left, so I arrived with enough time to plan seeing some bands and visiting all things Beatles. This is perfect for my time after I arrive. It was late afternoon when I finally did arrive and take a taxi to my hotel. My hotel was in a lovely spot, south of Albert Dock but on the water. The Dolby hotel was perfect where I could walk to the main city centre and get some nice views too. The evening sunset looked amazing from the lovely dining room with a full window looking out to the Mersey river. An easy day with relaxing and a stroll ... read more

While we have a little time on the train from Liverpool to London, am writing an update on our adventures from yesterday. On Tuesday, we left London Shepherds Bush for Euston Station about 0830. I note this because rush hour on the tube is an adventure all by itself: an incredible mass of humanity pressing ahead full speed on escalators and stairs, then squeezing a truly amazing number of people into the subway cars. We were glad to reach our train, where we had room to breathe. The ride from London, a little over two hours, was relaxing. Saw a lot of the English countryside, with large green fields, tree groves, pastures full of cows, and cottages, many of which were separated by hedge rows. We arrived about 1220. Liverpool is a bustling port city, and ... read more

We decided that our next ‘holiday’ would be back in the UK to visit family. The last time we were back was 6 years ago, so we were a little apprehensive about what we might find! A Big Bird and a bit of a nightmare journey We were so very excited to be flying for the first time on the A380…aka Big Bird and Emirates was our airline of choice. Just our luck that it went wrong…our initial flight from Hong Kong was delayed by 6 hours, which meant we missed our connection in Dubai. Emirates were terrible with communication (i.e. all their staff disappeared!) and we found out about the delay when the departures board changed! We were given a princely HK$75 food voucher each (that’s £6.25!) to spend in either Starbucks or McDonalds and ... read more

Today I had a tour ticket for the Anfield Stadium - Liverpool FC home ground. I arrived a little early, so I could do the museum prior to the tour. I had the opportunity of getting my photo taken with the Champions League Cup - and not only did i just get to put my hands on it, i got to lift it and hold it near a life size picture of Steven Gerrard. What a highlight, I then walked through the museum looking at the history of the club, the Managers, the Players, and also a few pieces of the Hillsborough tragedy, where 96 lives were taken during a game in 1989 because of overcrowding including the memorial wall. From the museum I then went for my tour. Instead of the normal 40 to 50 ... read more

Tuesday, my first day in Liverpool. I decided I would do the 3 hour walking tour today, and let me tell you it is one of the best tours to do. If you ever get a chance, do this wherever you visit - it doesn't cost to do this, but you can pay a gratuaties at the end. We started at St George's Hall, where there is a statue of Prince Alfred and Queen Victoria on horses. We then followed the path to the Art Gallery and to St John's Gardens. Seeing the Hillsborough Memorial was definately memorable to me. On down to Mathew Street, yes, the birthplace of the Beatles - where they first started out as a band. There is a lot of things on this street, including the Cavern Club and Wall of ... read more
