Today I saw Liverpool through the eyes as a tourist and a former resident with the help of Aunty Brenda. Being Palm Sunday, Aunty Brenda & I attended a service at the Liverpool Cathedral this morning. It's absolutely enormous - the largest in Europe. They started construction in 1901 and it was officially opened in 1978. Good things take time? We had lunch in the Refectory (some storage area of the cathedral I think) and was joined by a lively gentleman who gave us a historical account of church and his uncle's involvement in the music. After lunch we drove around the area, and I saw the very spot on Hope Lane where mum stood with Hugh (then a chubby pink baby) on her graduation day. Granted, it has changed much over 15 years. I arrived in London on Monday 3rd April and right now I'm in Liverpool for the weekend. It's been interesting so far! My "home base" is in Thamesmead South East London. It's a suburban area full of identical semi-detached brick homes right by the famous River Thames. I'm staying here with some family friends who are getting hitched next weekend. It's not the most exciting area, but one can easily escape the drudgery and head into London city by Buses, Trains & Subways. Ooh, I'm having so much fun with the public transport system here. I'm sure to many my fascination is a bit puzzling, but if you live in Auckland, you'll be feeling me right now. On Wednesday morning I decided to take a short little adventure to the local shopping centre whilst awaiting the ... read more

Well it has always been a boyhood bream of James' to see his beloved Liverpool play at Anfield and this weekend he finally got his dream. But before we headed up on Saturday morning we decided to enjoy the festive atmosphere in London and headed out to enjoy a touch of ice skating. London is great leading up to Christmas with lights and decorations everywhere and being cold it feels like Christmas is actually in the right season. Don't worry, we only tell ourselves that because we are jealous and missing the sun. Anyway it was off to beautiful Sth Kensington where they have set-up an ice rink outside the Natural History Museum and surrounded by Christmas markets. We had a great time pretending to be Torvill and Dean but the form was not great. Still ... read more

Walk on, Walk on, with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone..... YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE..... Afternoon all, I know the above won't mean much to you unless you follow the soccer, but Liverpool just won the Champions League trophy for the first time in 21 years, made even the more amazing because we have been so woeful for at least the past 15 years. We love you Rafael Benitez and Steven Gerrard! Ok, enough of that.... If anything, travelling is an interesting lesson in economics and the term 'standard of living'. Basically, the standard of living means 'how expensive is it to survive here?' A case in point, I've ventured into Chinatown again to balance my diet. An english diet of greasy sandwiches (liberal amounts of butter and mayo), greasy fish and chips ... read more

The Land of the Beatles! Who knew that an amazing group of men could all come from one place? Amber and I stayed up till 3 am and I am not too sure what we did. I think the night involved toast and jam with a movie! We woke up and jumped on the coach. Amber slept in my lap the whole way and I just day dreamed out the window. I have been thinking about my mom a lot lately. I have had this incredible urge to call her, but if you know me you know that is not possible. I would just love to tell her all the amazing people I have met, all the places I have seen, and I wish more than anything I could hear her travel stories. She was the ... read more
